Too Much Bullshit Will Kill You

By

Vince Del Monte, WBFF Pro Fitness Model, Certified Fitness Trainer
and Nutritionist and author of No Nonsense Muscle
Building.

One of my favorite past-times is going to Chapters book store and setting up my laptop and going to work.  Sometimes I am even tempted to see what’s in the latest bodybuilding magazines and one that I actually like is owned by Jeff Everson, a famous bodybuilder from the 80’s who is the owner of the magazine Plant Muscle.

It’s still guilty of looking like a supplement catalog and I don’t fully agree with Plant Muscle’s philosophy that training with weights is a PLANT of training but but I do like some of their features appealing to regular people with real training problems instead of just the minority of drug-using elite bodybuilders.

Too much bullshit can kill you… (I never swear in my post but I feel this one warrants it 🙂 )

In a recent PM issue I read a great homily: A very, very old Crow wanted to find the strength to fly up to the first branch of a really tall tree.  So he asked a Bull, the strongest animal, what to do.  The Bull said, “All you have to do is nibble a bit on my dropping.  You will get my great testosterone and protein for strength.”

So, the Crow nibbled just a bit and sure enough was able to fly to the first tree branch.  Excited, the Crow next wanted to fly way up to the top tree limb.  So he went back to the Bull for more advice.  This time the Bull told the Crow, “Well, to get to the top, you can’t just nibble – you must eat my entire pile of dropping.”  So, the Crow gobbled up the Bull’s entire dropping, and lo and behold, the next day, he soared all the way up to the highest tree branch.  So proud the Crow was, that he began flapping his wings wildly and squawk loudly.  It so happens, just then, a hunter was passing by in a neighboring field.  He heard the squawking bird, aimed and fired, and shot the old Crow dead!

The moral of the story is two-fold.  Pride cometh before the fall and while a little bullshit might make you soar a little, a lot of bullshit will kill you.

I have only been in the bodybuilding world for six-years and I know there’s a lot of bull around – I am sure you know that too.  I hope I will always be the exception and be your no-nonsense muscle building source of info and straight-up guy you can trust.

If I ever start feeding you bullshit, you have my permission to say so!

Share your thoughts of this homily below.

  2. I’ve read PM- if I want soft porn, I’ll look at Gear or Maxim. And, actually, no I won’t do that either. But it was still a cute little proverbial story.

  4. This is so true. I enjoy going into my local supplement store to see what the latest miracle pill is. If I was to listen to all that was told to me I would be spending upward of 600 per month on stuff that would do nothing. Same as the advice that is freely given in my gym from guys who look the same as they did 2 years ago, they can not tell you why they do it only that they read about it in the latest magazine.

Stay away from the complicated mumbo jumbo and BS, just work hard and eat clean

  6. I was glad to hear Jeff Eversons name!I used to watch his old TV show.I liked it
    because I’m 65yrs old & workout daily.I mostly use Bowflexs,because I workout
at home & with them you don’t need a spotter.I have free wts. also.but only use them on a few exercises! They’re not my choice but anything is better than nothing!
I liked Jeffs show because he showed how to do things, when your’re older & your
joints are worn from yrs of heavy lifting.I am 65 & also have Diabetes & Diabetic
Neuropothy,so the gains come very slowly, but I’m not dead yetI heard about you on another site(in Canada)so you probably know who I mean! Thanks,Tom
P.S.I can’t take most supplements because of my Diabetes!I’m currently cking out
Stemulite because I heard of it on WEB MD.It seems to be composed mainly of
ALA & I take 800mg of Alfa Lapoic Acid for my Neoropothy so it better have good
    results!

    Thanks

  11. I bet most of those supplements (if not all) in ‘Plant Muscle’ magazines could be life threatening sooner or later. To me, taking those testosterone supplements for building muscle would just upset the delicate balance of my body. Thats not cool !!

  12. If you’re worried about bullshit killing us, why did you tell us that bullshit story? Also ‘Prime cometh before the fall” is a mis-quote from the bible. What it actually says is “Pride comes before detruction, and a haughty spirit before a fall”, a much starker warning than merely a fall.

  14. It’s a pretty funny story that realy sums up what many of us “skinny guys” have gone through in our quest for muscle building. But in you Vince, it seems like we have found a straight up guy who cuts through the bullshit. Thanks for your help and your articles.

  15. The stuff sells becasue it “does” work for the short them, but you never know about the side effects. It is said that the current Gov of California spent a lot of money undoing the resulsts of his use of “supplements”. Not everybody had that kind of money, and . . .

The bottom line is what you, and other natural bodybuilders and trainers say–it takes time and patience, and, as always depends where you start. You start more or less within what you ought to be, its easier to get ripped. If your start, pardong the expression, obese, it will take longer. Either way, it means hard work to your goals, and your advice and training tips are part of getting there..

  17. Anne – Totally sorry. I hope you swear wear did cause you to miss the message.

    Cameron – That’s a very interesting comment… I would agree… I never thought of that myself.

Mark – good luck with your transformation.

Shaw – if it sounds too good to be true, most likely it is 90% of the time. That’s how to detect b.s.

Jacque – testimonials are so powerful because they are someone’s story so it’s hard to discredit them. I really can’t speak on behalf of their transformation.

Chris – well said… “work hard and eat clean.”

Gilbert and Koos – I can’t post a program for you in the blog comments here but start reading my articles, videos and looking at my website… you need to find a plan you want to follow. Start examining your nutrition program.

  19. Hey Vince,

Great story. I’ve always liked Jeff Everson’s way with words, and Planet Muscle as well. And I agree that it has become more of a supplement ad magazine these days. Definitely a departure from his initial claim that he would never have supplement ads in Planet Muscle. Oh well. There is still some excellent info to be had in there though. It just takes a bit longer to find it now.

  20. I think another lesson here is consider the placebo effect when assessing your results. I mean did the crow really suck up testosterone and protein from the bullshite? Sure, it’s a story, but people tend to believe what suits them best (or ultimately worst, in most cases).

  21. If more people realized that you can transform yourself without the help of all those “scientifically formulated super supplements” and just tried healthy foods the world would be treated to less of those annoying ads. I will admit, I do take simple suppelements……multi-vit, fish oil and whey protein and creatine for workouts. I’ve made big changes in one year using just bodyweight abd dumbbells

  24. Hi, I worked in the Pharmacy for about two and a half months, and some lady came in saying Hoodia slender gel has helped her lost 15kilo’s (I saw the before and after pictures, and its real), but I do not know what else she used, or did. Do you think it has any merit? Or is your knowledge on this subject limited? Like mine :). I have also been someone to believe that hard core nutrition and exercise is key.
