Why Do You REALLY Workout?

By

Vince Del Monte, WBFF Pro Fitness Model, Certified Fitness Trainer

Building.

NOTE:  This post was published on Feb 9th, 2009 and contained a photo with myself and four females who were dressed very inappropriately all comments until June 15, 1010 reflect the picture that used to be above.  The picture was with me and 4 “hot” girls to add impact to my blog post below.  In 11 days, I’ll be marrying the love of my life, Flavia, who is the beautiful girl in the picture with me on the day I proposed to her in Punta Cana (on my 30th birthday – sweet b day gift eh?!).  I’m far more proud of what I have above than what I had below.  Now enjoy the post… it’s one of my most popular ones ever!

I am going to be frank with you.

In return, I ask you to be frank with me.

No B.S.  I have been in the fitness world, managing fitness clubs, selling personal training, selling gym memberships and personal training for more than six years, so I’ve asked (literally) thousands of new members about why they work out.

My radar is fully dialed in to sniff out any B.S. answers.  Ready?

What motivates you to work out?

Why in the world do you bother lifting weights? Why would any person bother going to a gym?

If you said anything to the extent of “improve my blood pressure,” “relieve stress,” or “set a good example,” I’m not buying it. I call these logical motivators. There is nothing wrong with those motivators and I agree they are excellent benefits – but let’s get real.  I asked you to be frank with me. You don’t hit the gym multiple hours a week to improve your health profile.

You work out for emotional and irrational wants and fears.

You work out so you can attract an attractive person.  Let’s face it, sexy people date sexy people. This requires you to have a physique that looks good in clothes, and looks even better naked.

I think every man knows, that to some degree “bigger is better” in the hunt for improving your body for physical attraction.   And make no mistake about it, the underlying message of every media message is “the better you look” the more action you get from the ladies… plain and simple.

Guess why the message, “get laid this weekend” is spread more often than “optimize your cholesterol score”?  Because emotional reasons tug on your heart string and your heart string is attached to your wallet.

I am all for getting you to discover your irrational motivators if the benefit is for your long-term gain.

It’s true…the combination of well-proportioned muscle mass and minimal body fat is a sign of reproductive fitness and shows that you have more testosterone than the other guy (even if you don’t).  I don’t care how many “art of attraction” books you’ve read – if she’s looking for an adrenaline rush ride in a sports car and you look like a beaten down Pinto, then it doesn’t matter what you do or say, she’s not going to be interested.

Admitting That Looking Good Naked Is Your Motivator Is Not The Point Of This Post…

If we took a survey I am confident that looking good naked and hooking up is the most irrational and emotional desire that someone has for working out.  I know people work out for other reasons but I would declare this the winner.  Bare minimum, you want the most attractive lady at your work or school to think of you as the “go-to-guy” when she needs someone to help her move her furniture.

What Is An Irrational and Emotional Motivator?

Here are some examples:

  • Not having girls notice you while you walk through the club, but grab you.
  • Being able to wear whatever style of clothes you wish.
  • Having girls tell their girlfriends, “Insert your name here… show my girlfriends your abs!”
  • Hooking up with different girls every night of the week.
  • Avoiding embarrassment at the staff pool party.
  • Arms that rip the sleeves of your shirts and a chest that makes your top button pop off.
  • Comments like, “OMG…check him out!”
  • Not dying early so you can travel with your grandchildren.
  • Intimidating guys to move out of the way when you walk by.
  • Having others secretly jealous of what you have.
  • Never having someone disagree with your point of view out of fear.

Logical Motivators For Working Out

  • Improve your health.
  • Less stress.
  • Build Muscle
  • Good role model.
  • Balanced lifestyle.
  • Clothes fit better.
  • More energy.

You see the difference?  Sure, the irrational wants (compared to fears) are conceited and superficial.  I get it.  But guess which individual gets better results?  The person motivated by irrational motivators or logical motivators?  Irrational, hands down every time. The secret to achieving a first rate body is to figure out the true WHY – which is always an irrational fear or want.

Here’s how to figure out your irrational want:

1. Ask yourself, “Why do I work out?”  If you said, “To feel better…” then ask the same question to your answer.

2. Ask yourself, “Why do I want to feel better?”  If you said, “To be more productive at work…” then ask the same question to your answer.

3. Ask yourself again, “Why do I want to be more productive…” So that I get a job promotion and earn a bigger salary.  Continue the pattern…

4. “Why do I want to get a bigger salary?”  So that I can provide for my child’s education so they can have a future.

Notice how your reason for working out went from a very logical to emotional fear and want the more you asked why? The more honest you are with yourself, the faster you’ll get to your true reason why you work out.

Your why will be the difference between success and failure.  This is a topic rarely discussed in the bodybuilding world and can create unstoppable motivation by uncovering the truth about yourself. There is no right or wrong answer.  I only ask that you be honest with yourself.  Now it’s your turn.

I want you to ask yourself, “Why do I really work out?” until you discover your irrational and emotional want or fear. You might be very surprised to discover the real reason and what you really want.  This exercise might take you a few minutes.

If you’re comfortable with sharing, in one sentence, state the emotional and irrational why behind your motivation for working out.  What do you really want or what is your greatest nightmare?

  9. The man I know was doing shows and died was JackLaLane. So this is my current tragic commentary on your ads and it applies to those that did the most.He isn’t going to compete anyway with the guys and gals that do it in today’s decade(11-20)having not made it, but he was going to do his job and do it to the upmost of his ability. He was a respected man when he tried to do his television and he did well and was in shape as far as the eye could see.He is superceded by John Cena.John is a supermodel,USMarine, prowrestler, and is the epitomy of a sculpted figure and we’re going all day every day. Those guys he is left and right with aren’t well-spoken and very brash and he is not in association with LaLane and is much larger and more handsome because he is young and daring. The regiments he puts together aren’t mind-boggling to many but many know they are the more he does them and keeps up with a good diet and lifestyle away from his profession his likeness and improvements like JackL will be noted and he can do what others do and do much more with this product.

I also workout becuz before i was known as the kid who was to afraid to stand up for himself. But once I gained a good 6lbs of muscle and lost some of my fat i stood up for myself (I almost knocked out the kid that i used to be afraid of,and made his mouth bleed alot). He was really shocked when i did that but I didn’t care I felt like nothing could stand in my way anymore,so there u have it thats my answer to why i workout

  16. I work out because I want the sexy, fit body I used to have. I HATE having a sloppy belly that gets in my way and makes dressing a chore. I loved being fit at about 12% body fat and WANT IT BACK. I don’t care that I am over 50 because I know I can have it and look great no matter what I’m wearing! Plus, I want guys to think I look hot (even if I’m not interested) and not just pass me by like some inconsequential being…especially my husband.

  17. Hey Venice,
I’ll be straight up with you. The main reason I workout is to look good and to get hott women. I was married for 7 years. The worst 7 years of my life. And now I am 34 years old. And let’s face it those hott little 20 year olds don’t want some old pop belly guy. So that’s the number one motivater for me. Ya ya second is all the health resons also. But I would say most guys my age work out for the same reason. When we were in our early 20’s we found it easy to pick up chicks esp. coming from a surf town like I did as long as you were a good surfer and did’nt have saggy balls you were getting laid by hott little 18 year olds . After I got divorced I weighted 262 pounds am I’m 6’3 that is obese. It was so hard to get laid. Unless I wanted to buy it I was’nt getting what I wanted in the sex dept. But shortly after I lost 40 pounds and started going to the tanning bed. I started noticen lady looking at me and they would actually come up to me and say hey you look good what’s your name. I’ll say that is the best feeling ever. When you don’t have to be the one to start a conversation. You know it’s in the bag. 9 out of 10 when they would come to me I would have a date. Any way I’m dragging on. Another reason I work out is for work. The better you look the more jobs you can get. I have been turned down from lots and lots of jovbs when I had a beer belly. But when I got big I got every job I went for. Fat people are bad for your company in many ways so I think that if they have to pick between a fat person or a fit person they are gonna pick you. Esp. when all the jobs I went for were not desk jobs they were good hard working physical jobs. So any way thanks V I like what you do for us. I must say you have it going on. My only wish is to some day be where you are……………..

  20. My reason for working out is to try and improve my back problem which I’ve had for years now. I injured it in a helicopter crash overseas and since then it kind of went downhill. I said I try because it seems like I always injure myself when I try to keep a regular exercise regimen so I have to stop for a few days. I do stretching exercises but I’m not sure exactly what exercises I should do or shouldn’t do. That’s really the only reason I workout. I’m not overweight, maybe ten or eleven pounds and I’ll be 61 soon (that doesn’t help I’m sure). I want to send for your End the Back Pain vids but right now kind of strapped financially. I did download your Abdominable series and I’ve noticed a difference in my obliques so I know those different exercise work, just have to do them slow and easy.

I work out because I once USED TO BE the girl that turned heads and now, when I go anywhere with my two tall, blond, svelte daughters, I have to remind myself that the whistles/comments are no longer for me….but for my girls! I don’t care how old you get (and I’m only 52) – – – it matters!!! I haven’t been overweight or skinny – just soft and matronly. No longer, Vince . . . I want it THAT BAD!!!

  24. Vince, I started paying attention to my physical condition in January of 2008. I’ve survived 2 motorcycle crashes, thus the nickname, and had started to get thick in the middle. My work always kept me in good condition but, during recovery from the 2nd wreck my employer decided they no longer needed my services. I had no idea how quickly I would lose my shape! Needless to say, your info has pointed my in the proper direction and am now on the way to being in better shape than ever in my lifetime! Thanx for all you do! Take care, Crash

    3. So that i’m the hottest guy my girlfriends ever scene. why? cause right now im not.

    4. cause i want every other girl to want me, and not be able to. why? cause i want to feel wanted, alomst like a forbinden fruit…haha i just said i wanted to be a sin…i will accomplish this.

i will accomplish my goals. Vince i will buy your program, in about 2 weeks when i get my first paycheck. i am determined to do that.

  31. Hi Vince,
Well, to your question… Why do I work out… Well, its simple… I HAVE to be the hottest girl in the gym. I want every guy to stop and look at least twice!!! This summer I want to be admired by all, I’m not going to be the one admiring others this time. And its like you say…. Hot people attracts hot people…. I want to win Fame SA when I’m 35, which is 4 years from now. If I can do it before then, great, but thats my goal for now!!!!

  33. I work out so I can always be able to play with my 2 sons(pick them up, swing them around, etc.) and keep up with theie energy levels. I don’t want them saying to their friends “Yeah, my dad can’t even keep up with me anymore, let alone pick my mother up.” That would just KILL ME!!! Another reason why I work out is I like the attention that I get when I’m at work(lots of females at work location) and I hear comments about my arms, or how nice my shoulders look.
    Thank you Vince

  37. I have to admit, all those irrational motivators that had to do with women were my reason. I was not asked but demanded by this one girl to show her friends my abs and they were like “omg are you a hollister model?”. I cherish that moment and feel the need for more of those. It makes me want to build more and look like those guys on the commercials. Its a selfish drive, but i do try to humble myself even though it feels so good on the inside to receive such compliments and praise. Thank you Vince, you’ve been such a catalyst in my goals to success!

  39. I’m working out because I have my own online business where I sell super healthy products and I know that if I’m selling healthy products I need people to believe me, to me it looks better having someone in shape telling me something is healthy rather than someone out of shape telling me the exact same thing. Yeah there is always the benefits of attracting women but I learned in life that you’ll always lose money chasing after girls but you’ll never lose girls chasing after money. I would like to say my products are some of the healthiest best tasting natural products you’ve ever tried, my email is [email protected]

  40. I workout because I love the satisfaction of having a muscular body everyone looks at. If I go to the beach I can take off my shirt knowing that girls are looking at my body… and guys feel intimidated or jealous of my body. Another reason is to have respect from others, by having big muscles I feel I can walk around with my wife being confident that it is less likely someone will disrespect her or me… I love when I see someone I had not seen long time ago and that person tells me “hey you have been working out right…”.

    Pure self confidence and satisfaction.

  42. Hey Vince,
I workout cuz I had back surgery in the eighties that went bad. I was having all sorts of problems playing with my kids, basically just moving around. They said it would only get worse.
I started working out after my buds (who were gyms rats for years) forced me to start. I am happy to say I’m in excellent shape strong as a bull and starting a new job as a Correctional Officer shortly. I turn 57 in August..

I read your emails and have followed some of your training. Most recent , I punished some of the young bucks I train with by following your shoulder routine.
Keep up the good work.. I for one really appreciate you sharing your knowledge and experience.
    All the best, Ken

I don’t however need musles to attract women . In my experience women are looking for men that meet their needs , real men of character , with a brain and knowing how to use it , and eye candy , although helpfull , is not necessarily part of that .

  55. Why do I really workout?

    Vince,

I am an Army Soldier, fighting in the forces which guard my Country and “Our way of Life”
For me my Friend is a way of life, of course I always wants to look good and feels good about myself, but most importantly I do it because it is the only thing that can keep it alive in this kind of environment. I am currently deployed in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom and everyday that I go out on missions is very physical demanding work so I have to be in a good physical conditions, and that’s why I workout the way you describe it here, and I tell you this is the ONLY way you wants to survive in any kind of environment, even is that is to get the Girl of your dreams.

God bless America and God bless you ALL. Peace Out my Friends and Keep the hard work, this is your key for major success. Thanks.

  57. I’m not sure about the “irrational emotion” but personally, I train to be stronger. Since I started training very young, I think I’m just continuing to train because it feels normal to do so.

I’m not saying I do not understand motivation, such as being more attractive and such, but to me it doesn’t really feel like a good reason to train. Muscle = Sexy?

To me it sound more like a matter of ‘sex’ then real attractiveness problem…

Perhaps it’s from education or whatnot but self-control, confidence, power, discipline are but a few trait I believe are important to look after when training.

I really enjoyed reading your book Vince, since it tells lot of truth about the fitness industry and all the ‘bullshit’ they advertise. But I hardly believe that wanting to be more attractive is to be the sole reason a person would want to train. (or maybe it’s true for those doing only muscle training).

I started working out in middle school because I was scrawny and didn’t want people to F*%K with me and when you 13 no one knows how to fight and the stronger guy wins. As I got older it was for sports and the ladies! Stronger=better sports=confidence=attention=ladies. These days its many reasons, strength, health, confidence, beach ready, ladies, keeping young.

  59. Hey Vince,
I want you to help me!!! First of all, I’ve got one of the sexiest women (model for some magazines) in my life, I’m 37, she’s 28 and we’ve got a 13 month old son together. 40 days after she gives birth to our son, she got her 6 pack back!

I’ve been in the underground MMA world for 8 years (undefeated) and I’ve train with some of the best in different sport. Jean Frenette (several time world champions) was my karate sensei.
André Charette (who wins Mr. Univers) was my first trainer, not bad hein?

And honestly I train because I need to move some iron cast. If I stay calm for to long, then I’m looking for a truck to unload, I need to force on something to feel good.

I made my own gym at home and when I need to feel alive, I go down stair and perform some heavy moving! The worst part is that I’m not smart enough to train intelligently and stay away from injuries.

I need someone who can give me a nice program which is gona help me with my joint
    Thanks
    Best regard
    Sly

I work out mostly because last year I was diagnosed with Crohn’s disease and went from 200 lbs to a measely 150 lbs. With this disease it can keep me skinny and stop me from having any muscle. Well I refused to accept that. I refused to let something beat me. Now I train harder than I ever have and weigh 190 lbs. To me letting something beat me was my motivation to fight back.

  61. Hi Vince, I workout for 3 ways. 1) To gain more confidence – compared before when I was skinny, I have more confidence because having a great body somehow boosts self esteem. 2) To be satisfied when looking at my reflection in the mirror. 3) To gain admiration and earn respect – Since my job make me lead a group, stand in front and coordinate with different people, I find it easier to gain respect when people admire you for your good physique. Makes them think that you are worthy of time and attention because you appear competitive and intellectual compared when you are skinny or obese that people think you are lousy and is just a waste of time.

Im still know for being intimidating, im a “small pack of furry” but i dont get the ladies. i just want to be top dawg again, small ripped and a good 180 lbs at 5ft 6in. and i really want the ladies. and my job is strength demanding, being ripped will make it easier.

The girls you are with look like trashy low life whores, and their legs look a little out of shape, I work out to feel beautiful, healthy and confident for myself and the one man that gets to see me naked. I am a smart, sexy, pretty woman who wouldn’t date some loser that needs to sleep with a different woman every night to feel good about themselves. I work out because it makes me feel good knowing that I am in top physical condition and my body looks good. You are a very shallow person and I pity you if those women are the best you can do, because to be perfectly honest, they aren’t that great, unless maybe you are only interested in fake breasts? Good luck.

  70. I am sure not everybody thinks like you! I definitely workout because I like the benefits of looking good and feeling a self sense of worth too! Ever since I started working out in a serious manner 3 years ago, I have lost at least 30 pounds and have gained about 25 lbs. of muscle. I really don’t care if chics dig me or not because I have a girlfriend that makes me happy! So I don’t b.s when I tell you the reasons why I work out. I am 40 years old and people in general always assume that I am between the ages of 30 and 32. If I do get the opportunity to tell them how old I am their first reaction is disbelief. They ask me what my secret is and I respond that I take care of myself and workout periodically! I am so proud of my accomplishment including that I just earned a degree this past December and it’s because working out keeps me going at my age. Thanks for all the advice! Stay cool!

  75. hey vince

i work out because of all the logical motivaters you put up except for my clothes to fit better. way before those though my first motivation to work out was pro wrestling. i started watching WWE regularly when i was 13. i’ve been dreaming of entertaining the millions of fans in that ring since then. im now being trained and have plans to go to florida to further my training, after i get a degree in personal trainer. i figure it would help further my knowledge in the human body and how it works so i can get the better body i want. that and i love to work out with others so they can feel better about themselves the way i did when i first started working out. ive just started watching your videos and ive learned a lot already. im also getting better results and having better workouts just in the last week as well. im sure you’ve suggested to make goals and i do all the time. i put a lot of my goals which ive made for each specific muscle group and others on my yspace page so others can see me and what ive seet my sights for. check it out if you’d like.

    thanks again

when i started woking out the reason was i wanted to look attractive although i am handsome and nice … it wasnt enough for some reason …. and guess what ? yes because i was skinny !…. opposite six never cared about my personality ….. and when i talk about girls here i am talking about average beautiful girls not Super Hot models….. when a girl leaves u and u cant get over the relation because u r having a hard time finding some one else…. but imagin that what would it be like to give her the feeling that u r too much for her…. when u r in control … u will have more self confidence.. that was my motivation when i have started …. but after 4 months of working out i feel way better about my look and my body…. still i have alot of work to do …. but when i started going to the GYM i had friends there …. i had some results on my body that show gr8 transformation that happened to me, i am more strong more powerful and active ……. and after getting such results and see my body’s pictures those things are my motivation…. they’re my real motivation…. whenever i look to my achivement so far i feel like i want to go to the GYM … actullay i cant leave it anymore …..i love working out !

  81. I workout because I’m tired of being the scrawny guy in the group and always being compared do really skinny people. I don’t look intimidating and people don’t seem to give me much respect when it comes to people in the halways in my school, but I notice that the bigger dudes always have people moving out of their way because their size is respected. And it would be nice to impress the ladies as well.

  82. I work out with weights because I don’t want to be fat and flabby, nor skinny (as most of the females of my age strive for). I want to look healthy, be fit so that all the clothes I wear look good on me, and of course I enjoy gazes when I look pretty.
+++I want my husband feel that this good looking woman is WITH HIM. To be proud of me:)_

  85. i exercise for two reasons the first one is that i have self confidence issues. i dont think i look good, and since i dont think i look good i dont think other think i do either. even though i have self confidence issues i do have a fiance. my second reason is because i want her to love the way i look and cant resist my body. She also said that if i work out it helps motivate her to work out too, cause she needs someone to keep her in a routine.

  86. This is probably against what most people have said, but i actually work out for my fiance. Not because she wants me to look good ( although i do want to look good for her ) but the main reason i work out is so that if the situation was to arise, i could protect her. Honestly, do you think a punk would try to fight with a guy who looks like a freakin spartan warrior??? So its kind of a dominance thing too, basically saying, back up before i’m forced to kick some @$$.

And I just want to get bigger.

I am lifting weights to increase my metabolism and lose some fat, not to cheat on my wife who watches BS shows like Oprah and Dr. Dill who say that if your partner is starting to take care of themselves, there’s something going on.
You say you are going to be frank with no BS and yet you surround yourself with trashy looking women to try and convince us that your da man just because your well built…we are not all kids you know so have some respect for our intelligence please…further news letters have been cancelled.

  91. You’re right. I work out because I’m 44 years old and I want to turn back that clock as much as I can. I like guys that are HOT and either are younger or look younger, therefore I need to look younger and HOT myself.

I also work as a brand ambassodor/promotional model and I won’t get calls if they don’t like my photo.

On another note, I just feel much better when I’m eating better and working out harder.

I’m recovering from a torn MCL/ACL and it’s been hell trying to get back in shape while taking care of that knee.

I’ve always been very strong and big but I was at 35% plus b. f.. I started walking and slowed down on the food and lost 91 lbs. My wife told me I looked scronny and sickly I had lost alot of muscle along with the fat so looked on the web for help, found Venuto and that has led me to so many great people and all the info helps. I now am at 12% to 14% b.f. at 225. I have abs. I swear I get younger every year.

  96. Vince, I changed my workouts in college when the medication for my learning disability stopped working. When I exercise Im able to focus. Ever since then I have been working out six days a week doing different things. Not wo much workingout but exercising: bicycling, walking the dogs, gym workouts, climbing… anything of physical activity.
If there was any other reason for exercise it would be sports. I’ve been a big futbal player for many years. Never any good with the ladies – but in starting businesses, advancing my own life… yea, exercise has really been very, very important.

  98. I work out for over all health and well being….Deep down though ,I work out to make the other women jealous of what I have and the attention I get from others, I love the guys to feel intimidated because I may be bigger than they are or because I can lift more than them, I want the younger crowd to look at me and say Damn, I want to look like her, even though I may be 25 yrs older.
I work out so others can look at me and see that if you really want that sexy hard body it can be achieved through hard work and dedication, and the biggest reason I work out is because I want to get on a stage at least once to compete in a bodybuilding show…ALL eyes on me and my physique I worked so hard to achieve and hear the claps, whistles and what ever the crowd dishes out…takes a lot of courage to get up there in your skimpy suit (pretty much naked) and do all that flexing to compete against others who may blow you away…that’s my goal !!

  100. Hey guys,

just read this post and some of the replies. a couple people have been talking about school. i have just left high school, i was a nobody in high school, didnt work out i was crap at most subjects, but, i did play and get better at basketball, i love the sport, i started working out near to the end of my final year to beat the countys best team (which we did). now, when i first join the basketball squad i was a nobody, everyone was pretty good, girl came to watch the good players etc, but once i scored my first 3 point shot form just out of the 3 point line a couple girls took notice as my teams mates gave me high 5’s, 2 minutes later a second 3 pointer, 45 mins later a third, at this point i was becoming talked about alot i could sence it. just because u work out doesnt mean girl are going to notice you more, girl have different styles, u will fidn the girls that sleep around will go for a nice bodied guy, and the more nicer girls, the ones looking for relationships will go for guys with skill or knowledge.

i totally agree with vince tho about emotional and logical answers to his question.

thanks vince and to everyone who reads this, btw add me on msn [email protected] if u would like any info or stuff ive come up with myself 🙂

    cheers.

  101. I work out because I am 140 lbs and 6’1″. I’m “Skinny Charlie”. I do not eat as much as I’d like (because I attend college and food is a luxury at a University). I started working out and I signed up for all of Vince’s stuff because I started doing Judo, and I am now all about grappling. I havn’t been able to lift a ton, and I’m far from being ripped. I’m not taking any supplements, I’m just trying to strengthen my upper body to improve my Judo throws and help my grappling. I’m not lifting more than three times a week, but I also try to get in the gym at least once a week. I’m doing Judo at least three nights a week though. Thanks for the information Vince!

I can’t life weights unless it will stunt my growth I hear. I am right now 5’2 with huge triceps and a nice chest. The six pack is alright, I can’t say I am ripped. I used to take muscle pills without letting anybody know which caused me a heart condition. I learned my lesson from that 7 months ago.

Why do I work out? To feel better about myself.

Why do I want to feel better about myself? So that I’ll be attractive.

Why do I want to be attractive? So I can enjoy love and sex.

Why do I want to enjoy love and sex? Because it would make me happy.

Seems odd, but that’s MY truth.

  130. Hi Vince
I work out mainly because I want to feel good in my clothes, to put on whatever I want and look and feel good. I am 55 years old and to be honest it gives me so much self confidence if people tell me that i look good. If a 55 year old can do it, then anyone can do it. Not looking for relationships but it is still nice to be appreciated.

  131. Hey Vince-

There are a ton of these things on here but I had one i don’t think anyone has hit yet.
In the post you said that one of the reasons was for girls to look at you as you walk by. Well, mine is a bit different, I want the guys to look as I walk by. Now before you make any quick judgments here me out.

I’m not gay. But I have seen girls look at me as I walk by and that is just from loosing weight, holding my head up, and not being so self conscious all the time. The reason I want guys to look is because if you can get a straight guy to look at you as you walk by and say “Holy crap, look at that guy” you know you are doing something right.

I want to be the guy that all the other guys look at and say “check that out” “look at his arms” “look how big his shoulders are” and all that.

Don’t get me wrong though, I love the looks I get from the girls 😉

  133. I don’t work out at all, apart from my job- I work as a scaffolder, so there is sometimes a bit of heavy lifting. One of these days I might get into a gym, so I am planning for the future (if I have one!) Spend most of my time after a 10 hour day (leave camp at 5:30 am, get back same pm) checking my post and emails. The opportunity is there for a 12 hour day, but that cuts another hour out of my computer time, and I just haven’t got it to spare! At airport at present, waiting to go back home today, then back to work tomorrow, which is why I’ve got time to reply to your email.
FYI: presently in Melbourne, flying to Brisbane. Tomorrow, Brisbane to Karratha (W.A.) Comment from Australia, 54yo male

Why do I workout ? Well, to look better , more energy, have balanced lifestyle, etc . were reasons of by-gone days. When I had achieved all that I found I have more enemies than friends . People started to pull me down . A sort of who’s better competition started. Something I never wished to enter in . A lot of humiliation or attempts to humiliate followed. I found that people can’t stand exellence. Now I workout to be fighting fit. No one dare humiliate me. I don’t wish to start a fight but neither should they get into any fancy of raising a fight with me.

  135. I’m 50 years old and am tired of people telling me all my life “You’re sooo skinny”, or thinking that I may be sick or something. I eat like a horse and even as a kid my mom would take me to the doctor because she couldn’t believe anyone who ate as much as I did could still be so skinny (dinner at home at 5pm, dinner again at my girlfriends at 6pm, and another meal around 10pm before I went to sleep). The most I could ever weigh was 137lbs (5’10”). Getting your e-mails regularly constantly reminds me that I should work out and although my eating habits suck (that’s harder to work on than exercises), I push myself almost every day for at least ‘one more push-up’ and one more sit-up. The beginning was hard, watching you do sets on your video and here I am getting exhausted after just 15 push-ups. Well, it’s a month later and I’m up to 80 push-ups and 50 sit-ups…I’ve gained 10lbs of muscle (147, the heaviest I’ve ever been). Friends and acquaintances are telling me how much healthier I’ve been looking and, seeing the results myself makes me want to exercise more. I won’t kid you, I started mostly because I want to get someone HOT to want ME. My sex life is OK, but I’m always disappointed with the partners I get. Let’s face it HOT gets HOT…I still have a way to go and 147lbs may not seem like much to you but when you’ve tried 50 years to get to that weight, trust me, it’s a big deal. Thanks for all the tips and keep ’em coming!.

  136. I work out because i´ve always been weak. thats it. and no one likes to be humiliated by people because of your weaknesses. And when there is girls watching, it becomes watching. It sucks. my objectives are freestyle handstand push ups and muscle ups… I dont want to have big arms or a great chest or even a six pack. Maybe in this process i´ll (have to) get some mass and look better. That will be a bonus! This post is so true, anyways. a good one!
    Kind Regards, Vince

People seem to treat you with more respect, it’s wonderful for your confience. Not sure I can get back the 17 inch upper arms of 10 years ago at 55 but I can get close.

  139. Vince,
I won’t comment on the girls, to each his own. As for why work out yeah I want to enjoy what I see in the mirror and I want my wife to continue to see me as hot. But its because I want to keep on hanging with my 3 sons and not have them beat me at a foot race just yet. I want to continue teaching martial arts and not look like a Buddha or have the 20 somethings whoop my cakes just cause I can’t keep up.
I’m 40 not 80 so staying fighting fit is all important. My role model is Randy Couture, if he can then I can.

  143. I feel great when I eat healthy food ( no extra sugar – no chips – no junk food )..and when I workout atleast 4 days a week and do some running in Hyde Park. When i look at a mirror and see how fit i am, i feel just great. My clothes looks great specially T-Shirts….But, feel bad when I stop working..and worse when I eat unhealthy food.
Three good reasons for wrking out:
    * Feel fit = feel great and confident with friends.
    * Attract awesome girls.
    * Got enough energy and power when doing something like: Parkour – Moving Things – Foot Ball.

  144. I started working out when I was 18, just out of high school. I had always been athletic and played sports my entire life, but by the time I left high school I was pushing 300 lbs at 5’11”. Needless to say I wasn’t on the right track. I started with Body-for-life and took off 120 lbs in about 9 months time, with horrific calorie restriction, tons of “fat-free” foods, and all the other non-sense that comes with the misunderstanding of what “eating healthy” really meant. At 18, you usually really don’t care about the health, as much as what you look like, so I would have to admit that I definitely started my workout experience simply for my appearance, and any health benefits would just be bonus.

Over the next 6 years I would go in and out of working out, hitting the gym for a couple months, then a couple months off. My weight didn’t fluctuate much, but eventually through tons of dedication, cooking for myself, and the hope of fulfilling my grandmothers wishes of being 100% raw I finally turned over about a year ago.

After coming across Vince’s program, it only solidified the fact that I was just lazy and was only going through the motions at the gym. Sure, I’d hit a workout hard here and there, but nothing to be proud of. I sit now at about 180 and 10% body-fat without doing much except maintaining a proper, raw and organic diet. It’s now time that I achieve the chiseled physique that I’ve always really been after.

At the age of 25, I am definitely far more interested in the health benefits associated with a healthy diet and regular exercise. I love the fact that I enjoy eating, even in a healthy way, but nonetheless I am still after a breath-taking physique. I will not lie, most women enjoy my body as-is, but I’m ready to take it to another level. The bottom line is that nothing replaces hard-work in the gym. No steroid, no supplement, nothing. Train hard(er), Rest and Nourish your body and the changes will come.

I think the most important things that Vince covers in his book is that the intensity has to be there, and not just some “guess” that your workout was intense, but solidified statistical data that PROVES you did more work, or the same work in less time. And of course, if you’re not eating enough and sleeping 7-8 hours, then your gains will be hindered, if any gains are experienced at all!

Vince, although I’ve been around the block, I do appreciate your book and the re-inspiration it’s brought to me and the truth behind building serious muscle mass. Thanks!

  145. I work out basically because I know I have a great body and like to keep it that way . It’s irrational I know, but it makes me feel good about myself and assertive when I’m around people. Is it necessary? perhaps not, but it works for me and it seems to bea healthier habit than other people do do for the same reasons. Also, on a daily basis, I like the feeling when I’m done with the gym. On the other hand, I feel guilty when I miss a training session, or I let too muchtime lapse without working out.

  146. Hi Vince,

You are absolutely right. I work out to look good and feel good. I want to attract good looking people. And there are more reasons. Most common is the self confidence. I have been reading your emails about putting all that gym work to use in active living. I got me thinking…

I decided in January to enter the Gatineau Loppet. It’s the largest cross country ski race in Canada. Now, I am not an athlete, so a 53km race was out of the question. However I do some recreational skiing and the 5km sounded right.

I used your body weight exercises when I was traveling. They helped me tremendously and the mountain climbers were “burn city”. The planks showed me how weak my sides really were.

The ski race is primarily aerobics, yes. However; your legs, shoulders, triceps and core must all be strong to handle the endurance factor. Not to mention the glutes.

So how did I do? I was doing well for 3/4 of the race. Then I fell, big time. I questioned myself. “You are 46, overweight, what were you thinking? What are you doing out here?”

I regained my composure, breathing and took a drink of water. Slowly I got back on track and into a rhythm. I fell three more times but kept going to the finish line.

My time was 43:35min with a 12th place finish out of 13 for my age group (45-49).
    I my daughter’s words “Well, you kicked somebody’s ***.”

I was happy, exhausted, grateful and alive. I proved I can be more than I was before. So yeah, I am 46, overweight and most importantly I DID IT!

Committing to a workout plan takes discipline, effort and constantly motivating yourself thinking of the benefits you achieve. Celebrate each workout as a victory.

Committing to an event like this, truly tests how well your plan is working. It also forces you to fight any fears and lay it out there for all to see.

Vince, thank you for all your coaching and videos. I am still on the path to get a six pack.

I work out to do more during this life.
How about white water rafting this summer?

most importantly, they need to be in a caloric deficit. lots of stair climbing and skipping and sprinting if possible -everything at their fitness level obviously

  151. I think going to the gym starts with wanting to look good for the opposite sex. But for me and many I believe it becomes your everest! When you realise that conquering this or even when you KNOW your on the right path and nothing can keep you from the summit…….it breeds success in all facets of your life!

Having the discipline, dedication and knowledge to achieve your perfect body is abnormal in this day and age, so I remind myself everyday that to achieve abnormal results …..I have to do abnormal things! I have to log my workouts, my diet, my whole program! I have to get up early if my plan tells me to, or not go out this friday night if I have to train Saturday morning, etc!

My wife took a little while to grasp the concept but my dedication, discipline and knowledge was too much for her to bare and she is now well and truly on her way to the summit! My three children awake four mornings a week to our grunts and groans (from the gym!!!) and it will in time rub off on them also…..and this means that its something that they will learn early……Perfect for their success!

The dedication and discipline you already have in you….the knowledge…Thanks go to Vince! Cheers mate!

  158. Why do I work out? Well, I was overweight and struggling to keep fit. So, I began working out to see if I can push myself to a physical level that I had never achieved (goal seeking). I started my journey 1 1/2 years ago using a competitor’s product but I gradually began incorporating Vince’s techniques and principles to a system that I can now call my own. Something that works for my lifestyle and schedule.

The ripple effects to getting fit was that I gained confidence to wear clothes that fit me well; wife likes the way my body looks; family, friends and co-workers see me physically fit and ask me how to do it; my soccer teams (younger kids) see my muscles and ask me “How do I get my to look like yours?”. Hey, even my Mom no longer calls me her pudgy kid anymore. YES, mission accomplished! The most important aspect of my transformation is my fearless but thoughtful attitude towards life in general.

In the end, staying fit is a worthwhile endeavor that pays off in many ways. It is lifelong challenge where complacency is not welcome.

Thanks Vince for helping us chart a new path for many of us.

    Sincerely,
    /AC

  159. Hey Vince, Glad you asked me a personal question. Why Do I workout? I workout to keep the weight off my body frame. I have lost 125lbs. in nine months and kept it off for three years now and only because I workout 6 days a week and eat healthy everyday. It’s no longer an option for me. If I eat something not with my new lifestyle I gain the weight from it. So its a choice to stay leaner or just be lazy, I choose the former. Thank you.

  160. The cut the crap version:

I work out becuase I want to be strong. If something needs to be lifted, I want to be able to take it up and move it off alone. If some guy messes around I want to be strong enough to literally throw him through the air. Besides, I despise being week.

I want a smashing body. The kind of body that turns heads.

And the final reason is that I love it. I love working out – pushing myself to my limits and beyond. I truly and honestly love collapsing on the floor because I just can’t do another pushup.

Lets face it, this world is a superficial world, but its the only one we have, and when your a skinny fat person, you know that first hand. To get to the point I want to strike fear in men, and undeniable attraction from women. I want females to be obsessed with me, to the point where i get sick of it, and move on to the next lady. 162. I work out for a reason you could have included in your blog and email, the fact that I used to be bullied and from that I have low confidence, if I am stronger and look stronger I can be more confident and less scared of certain people that may treat me badly if I am just a skinny weak looking guy, that is my main reason, next is health and next is the look, those things in that order. But you didn’t notice anything about confidence really in your blog.

As you said vince i work out to be in better physical shape so that i look more attractive to the opposite sex…plain and simple…of course there’s no denying the fact that it is good from a health perspective as well…but then again i could easily be jogging, swimming etc. to achieve that. I hope I am able to achieve my desired physique after following your programme.

  167. My principals reasons to work out are irrational motivators that you said before, and, of course, I like to train hard. Its a very nice sensation when you finish a hard training, the feeling is awsome. I train to be in health too. But the main reason is because I m sick to be skinny.

    Thanks for your great post

  168. Keepin it real…. I work out for the attention of the chicks. Who doesn’t like ALL THE FEMALE ATTENTION. Bigger muscles + good looks = a hell of a lot of attention. Just to name a few (your girlfriend either loves or talks about these guys)

    1. LL Cool J
    2. Brad Pitt
    3. Bruce Lee
    4. Arnold Swarchenegger (In his prime)
    5. Sylvester Stallone
    6. The Rock

These are guys that guys want to be like or girls wish they could be with. The common thread other than all of them being on TV is that they have the mental picutre prototype body that most guys seek.

No need to lie if us guys had a chance to be one of these guys for a day we would use it to ur advantage. Me personally, I work out to look like an NFL player in one of my authentic #54 Brian Urlacher jersey. Can’t have skinny arms when wearing this thing. I hate it. I’ve been workin out hardocre and started from 6′ 0″ 149 lbs. and now I am 176 lbs. My goal is 220 lbs cut up. I’ll be there by the end of this year.

I haven’t used your workout plan Vince but I’ve definitely used the same philosiphies and I will say that eating is the most important change I HAVE MADE TO GAIN WEIGHT!

  170. Hey Vince!
I work out because I want to be noticed. That’s what keeps me motivated and on track. It might be irrational and superficial, but it’s the truth. The interesting thing is the rational motivators you list are all benefits I get for feeding my irrational motivation. They don’t get me to the gym but they are part of my life now and the thing is they are becomming increasingly important as motivators. Sometimes they give me the added push I need.

This has created a problem, however. Now that I know my motivation is because I want to be noticed I don’t feel great about it. I liked it better when I was working from other motivations that were less shallow and also less real.

  171. I go to the gym because I am a boxer. I train for boxing 5 times a week and when my goal is to become a professional boxer. When / if I hit professional boxing, I want to be in the heavyweight division, which means I still got to put on 30 pounds, which is not that long hehe. I am currently 6″4 and I weigh 175 lbs, my goal weight is 205-215. So basically the thing that boosts me to workout and get bigger is boxing, and it’s a real good motivator because it has worked for me recently, In 2 months I put on 15 lbs! 🙂

Not to mention my girls are both beautiful and still too young to date. Which gives me more time to get bigger so I can scare the hell out of any guys who want to date them.

  179. Btw, those girls are hot.

My reasons for working out are mostly because of the freedom it provides me.

I do what I want, as I want, with who I want and how I want to do it. True I make more money than before. Which means I don’t have to work as much and use my free time taking short vacations whenever I want. Short term vacations are soo much more fun when you are in shape cause you can do lots of outdoorsy stuff and always just know you look good but that the body is no longer the focus since its something I have mostly taken care of … that the free time I have I can spend doing other things I am free from my worries and thoughts about how I look. I am free from worrying about what others think of me, cause I know I look good already. Free to focus on whatever I come up choosing to do at any given moment.

  180. Mostly, I do it because I think small, petite women are so HOT (the type that you would just LOVE to pick up with your arms). I’m kind of a shy guy, so I feel that getting into shape could probably help me attract women (the whole “they come to you first” sort of thing). But then again, I feel aggressive every time I train, so maybe that’s what it’s also helping me with: being a little more assertive.

(I’m learning how to dance, too. I feel like I’d be more credible as a dancer if I looked leaner and stronger.)

Plus, I’m planning on joining the military some time this year after college. And the fact that I eventually want to be a police officer. It makes me sick that we have overweight cops who think that just knowing how to shoot straight will get them respect as an officer of the law. Face it, if you have a gun on your hip and a belly hanging over your belt, you won’t get much respect!

I have a LOT of reasons, but those are the main four reasons why (all of them important to me).

  181. I began working out september 2007, I was just starting my second to last year at college and my year became co-educational. When this year started I just felt deflated around all these beautiful women, like I was too disgusting to be worth their time.

Since dropping down to below 10% body fat and gaining some proper muscle (and a haircut) I’ve found the ladies much easier to talk to, I’m literally friends with almost everyone and I love it!

The reason I’ll never stop working out is because I never want to feel like I did before then. I was disgusted when I looked at myself, now, I can’t resist when I see a mirror!

Cheers Vince, another insightful post, you’ve been a major factor in my success.

  182. You’re right Vince, the majority of men workout to look hot and attract girls (or guys as the case may be). But that does not mean they also don’t work out for health reasons. Working out is very self affirming. I like your psychology but you need to take it a step further to completion. If you’re going to ask why men want to workout and be fit (you say to appear more attractive and sexy) then you also have to ask why they want to appear more attractive and sexy. It’s not like it’s for no reason.

Men want to be fit and attractive to attract others because it feels good to get that acceptance from others, as opposed to the rejection that you and many other skinny men attested to on this website. As I already said, working out is very self- affirming, so the ultimate, core reason why men work out is for self affirming reasons, to feel better about themselves. The acceptance and attention they get from others by their “hot” body is what does this.

  183. Why do I work out?

    1. It isn’t to get jacked on muscle, or to look good, its simply because I workout to carry the work load on my back, my gear, and weapon in the field of combat. I started at 139 lb, and now I’m at 185 lb. I carry my body weight, plus an extra 100 lbs of gear, and more. Working out isn’t a hobby, it’s to help stay in fit to stay alive.

    2. Its better to be fit than fat, and slow in combat.

  184. I Workout for two reasons:

    1. I am short stature. That i cannot control. But gaining Muscles and being stronger is in my hands so i want to compensate for my short height with stronger phsyque.

    2. I am a Fighter pilot by profession and true anaerobic workout is very important to develope G-tolerance (tolerance against acceleration forces in Ariel conabt training). Thats is why i work out.

  185. Believe it or not, people really really do work out for health reasons AND stick to it for those reasons. Not everyone is 30 and under with every waking minute thinking “How can I hook up with…”. As someone who has been working out since she was 13 and is now 48, I can indeed state, “I work out to stay healthy, so I can continue to move well, so I can keep the majority of my bone mass, so I can continue to go to my job as an iron worker every day and get through 8-10 hours and still be functional. “Buy” what you will, Vince, but you can’t tell people the reasons they work out are the same as yours.

  187. After losing 50 pounds of FAT (mostly health related reasons when I started) I started working out purely for narcisstic vanity. After putting on about 10 pounds of muscle and losing a total of 75+ pounds I now do it because I love the way I look now plus I am afraid of turning back into a fat pile of lard. My wife also likes my muscles too, especially when I flex my biceps. My next quest is my abs quest–want to take a photo of my abs before i die….(vanity)….

  192. I workout not just to look better, but also to be stronger, if you have to fight or something, muscles also work as an armor. In addition, if you are going to run, or bike, less fat means you’re going faster. Having alot of fat while running or biking is like you’ve got a backpack with weights in it, alot heavier I suppose.

  196. Well, I was always fairly active but during my late 20’s, I became less motivated and lazy. I always watched what I ate but I still had that flab around my belly and not very attractive legs. I looked ok in clothes, but I wouldn’t dare wear a bikini or even attempt to wear anything like those chicks you’re photographed with.

I got so sick of how I looked like and if I am not gonna look hot at the age of 30 (still single) then when on earth am I? I am quite short so gaining/losing one pound makes a difference. So, I have been hitting the gym hard, cut down on carbs and food in general and I feel great! Still a long way from looking “HOT” but at least I moved my ass and started to get motivated. I really do not wanna look back when I am older and regret never going on “that” vacation and wearing “that” bikini or hide from the camera because I had an ugly body…..I don’t wanna be labeled as the chick that’s always on a diet and always looks the same. I wanna wear what I want, feel good about myself and make heads turn. I want the girls at the gym to say, “I wanna look like her”. I hate it when I get invited to bbq’s or pool parties and I am one of the few girls that is in her summer dress because I am too embarrassed to wear a bathing suit. I also hate it when I get invited to a wedding and I feel so fat in those strapless evening gowns or look like my grandma in one of those covered up dresses! Well, screw it! I got fired up and decided that this is it. It’s NOW or never!

Keep sending them posts Vince. Thank you for motivating me and for everything you do!

  200. hi there,

well to be honest, I was really big and huge i reached 116 kg, I lost so many things, one of them is my wife,

I was 30 years and looking like 40 years old,

if this is not an enough motivation to keep on doing what i am doing, well i don’t know what other things can motivate me,

now i always keep an old picture of myself to always remind myself about the dark ages, and this is what mostly motivates me to keep on working out and training.
honstly i don’t train for any other reason but that i am investing in my 30s for my late 60s,
    now i am 32 i am 80 kg i have a good posture and i am happy,

my plans to become more ripped and to have a fat indx of 1 digit year around

  201. I work out because I was a champion Taekwondo player , I was on the Olympic team, and I was good! I left New Zealand to work in Taiwan. When I got fat, and I always thought I was too skinny, even when I was fat. I realised I started looking fat when everyone said I was. No more ..wow you are awesome attention remarks. I got no attention anymore, i was fat, I want a champ nomore and i looked old. Gilrs werent looking at me when I was walking up or down the road no more, i was handsoem inside and confident inside but it wasnt convincing the birds. So, I wanted my abs back to make the girls love me again. Once they loved me I felt life was easier. I was the man again. Thats the honest truth, and I love showing those dick head trainiers who called me fat to begin with that I could do it without paying them a cent!!! That was more satisfying and still a massive motivator to me today. No drugs! And I an exampleonce again, caue everyone knows how much I lost. Im the man!

  203. I work out because I want to have a hard, strong body, even as a 62-year-old female. The reason I am able to do it is that for me weight training is one of my greatest joys in life. I train hard and love every minute. Nothing feels so good as the sense of my muscles working together to accomplish a task with a heavy weight. Squats are my favorite. I am not so enthusiastic about cardio, do it mainly for health. And, I do enjoy having my hourglass figure. If I did not actually enjoy weight training so much, I don’t think I could make myself do it – it is hard work, as well as pleasure.

I focus mostly on compound movements. Once I learned that weight workouts should be no longer than 60 minutes, I dropped most isolation exercises.

  204. Hey Vince,

I workout because it makes me look awesome!!!
I’m 36 years old, married and I work in the corporate world. Everyone one I meet pegs my age in the late 20’s and say I could never be older than 30. I’m in better shape than guys 10 years younger than me and I love it. By the way I’m 5’10” and I weigh in at 198 pounds with bodyfat at 9%. My wife also loves the way I look and always tells me when both guys and girls admire me. My daughter thinks I’m Superman and is constantly feeling my abs and my biceps…lol.
Sometimes the situations can get a bit uncomfortable and I really have to check myself around strangers. I was at a cocktail party a few months ago and this young lady made no attempt in hiding the fact that she was interested in me. I did find it a bit amusing so I asked her how old she was. She said 19!!!! I told her that I was 36, married and that I have a daughter and even though I thought she was awesome there was no way we could hook up. Imagine my suprise when she said she didn’t care…scary!!! Well I do care because I love my wife so I just walked away from the situation.

So yes Vince the reason I work out is because I love the attention. There’s something very attractive about seeing something you can’t have.

  206. I have been an athlete since I was in about the third grade (about 8 years old). My dad introduced me to athletics at a very young age and I developed an admiration for the athletic lifestyle.
I have also been a Type 1 Insulin Dependent Diabetic for 47 years (since I was 12 years old; I am now 59).
I am a Sports Performance Enhancement Specialist and feel that to serve as a positive influence and sell myself I not only have to encourage a healthy lifestyle but exhibit one as well. My clients are all very successful, I might say.
I plan to be the first Insulin Dependent Diabetic to become a centenarian (live to be a hundred years old).
So, my reasons for working out are much more valiant than you or the “statistics” may suggest.
It is awesome to look good due to the workouts we submit ourselves to, but to not have individuals realize the true worth/basis for the workout shows a really immature and selfish reason for training.
I could go on considerably but thank you for the opportunity to voice my thoughts.

and I cant keep bringing disgrace to myself……
Therefore I work out, I read about workouts and follow a dude who has enlightened me with his workout tips….Thank You Vincie……..

  210. Spot on! One of my strengths has always been my honesty of why i love the gym. “i want to look good for the opposite sex”. while some people seem to shy away from this statement, im proud to tell people my reasons. The best part about it is (although ive never had complaints!) im always looking to improve, year after year. In 30 years time i may just end up being the hottest 60 year old on the block! and i look forward to that challenge.

  211. I decided I wanted to start working out because I deserve to live life to the fullest. As cheesy as that sounds, it’s true. And why shouldn’t I? I deserve to be fit, and healthy, and to live life to the fullest. Getting attention is just icing on the cake compared to all of that. Hopefully living such a lifestyle would inspire others to also take action concerning their own health. If less people stopped living life as the victum, more people would be taking action and improving their life. I’ve lived life as the victum long enough. And now I intend to live life for the better.

btw, I agree with kftaichi. I hope those girls were just being used for a promotional shoot, because they dress way too trashy for my taste.

I hear what my girlfriends say and almost everyone of them prefer a guy who is say your body weight Vince and ripped to shreds like you compared to a bodybuilder type body. Simply because it’s not too big, it looks real and as you said somebody like that looks better in clothes than a bodybuilder would.

  213. Why I really workout, why I desire to be supremely fit and muscled? Why have I only just started, a beginner, a novice?

I don’t want to be better than everyone I have ever met and has given me sh*t, I want to destroy their presence and confidence… completely and totally.
Then smile and be such a nice guy. All with passive aggression! I want to fill a room such that everything (metaphorically) stops when I walk in!

I am who I am, a good and decent guy that is tired and weary of being embarrassed of taking my shirt of because of my body fat. I will always be a good and decent guy, I refuse not to be. I have drive, ambition, aggression to attain my goal, the volition to more than make it.

  215. At 40 yrs old and poor genetics (high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and diabetes runs in the family) I HAVE TO WORKOUT! I have worked out most of my life until I spent time community to a University 35 miles one way in heavy traffic it became too hard to fit a workout in, so I let myslef go for about 10 yrs. Now I have been the doctors and it scared the crap out me! So, for the last 2 years I have been training again. Although I herniated a disc in my lower back in the summer of 2007, I am now seeing results!

At 5’9″, 202lbs at 12% BF, I am looking darn good now. My cholesterol is under control and my blood pressure has dropped. 🙂

So, my motivation is exercise or die early! LOL However, I do like the looks I get, although I am married so persuing the opposite sex is no longer an option. I do it for the “shock and awe” as well as my long-term health.

Oh yeah, the wife likes it too. 😉

I want to to go to a beach one day in a white thong bikini and have everyone turn around and say “DAMN”! I also am working towards becoming a fitness model.

You were right Vince when you said, when people look at your chiseled body or 6 pack abs, they do appreciate the efforts you have put to go through it. I need that appreciation which i already get from my work. Also, so true that probably a few rejections in life from some people have forced me to get into shape so that i can walk by and show them that i am nothing less… !! :)… Thanks vince.. i am still on the 3 day metabolic program and it works good :).. will stick to it for a month before moving to the 4 day metabolic boost program

  222. I’ve always been looked down on ever since I was in kindergarten, and I was always the shortest and scrawniest kid too. It got no better as I got older, and when I started high school, I was watching all the popular kids get all the attention from the girls, and I wasn’t BSing myself, I knew these were the best looking guys, all those that were good in sports or naturally buff. It didn’t help that in tenth grade, I was winded walking up the stairs at my house. So, at that point, that when I started working out, tired of being the tiny kid who gets picked on, and, in 12th grade, when i ended up 3rd strongest in bodybuilding class for bench press, boy did it ever feel good to have people respect me for it. So, my reason for working out is having people respect me for my body, and not spit on me for it. Also, yes, looking good naked is an excellent motivator as well.

  224. Hey Vince,

I started working out because I didn’t want to sit back and be outdone by the people around me. I know many skilled and dedicated individuals in various sports and martial arts, and it bothered me to stand at the sidelines and be their spectator when I knew I could be among them. I also used to be chubby until I started doing martial arts in high school, and during that time I was also hit with the stomach flu and lost quite a bit of weight. It was an unpleasant transformation, but it got me started. Later in high school and university I noticed that there were quite a few attractive people around me. I’m not that happy with my body and don’t consider myself and attractive person, but I knew I could change that. I have some muscularity, but I’m far from satisfied by it, and I still have a belly that I want to get rid of. I have a long road ahead of me, but I’m glad I took that first step. I’ve been training and taking my nutrition seriously for just over a month now, and I don’t plan on letting up. There’s no such thing as being too fit.

  233. I started working out because I read Younger Next Year for Women, realizing that in my mid 40s with a small child, I didn’t want to give him what my dad gave my sister – being an orphan in her 20s. That reason morphed into a more emotional one: I like how I feel when I work out. And then I started doing tae kwon do, and the work outs began to be something to make my endurance and strength better when I do tae kwon do.

I also realized when I tore my ACL, MCL, and both menisci that I wasn’t nearly as in shape as I thought. So am continuing to strive toward that goal.

  234. Hi Vince, thanks for the nice post and thanks to all for the motivating replies. I don’t need days, hours or even minutes to know why I do work out. I know exactly.

I am 42 yrs young, 5 ‘ 9 ” height. In the last 4 months I went, through hard work, from 202.4 lbs to 176 lbs. I started to workout when I break up with my several years girlfriend. The motivation has everything to do with sex. I decided I wanted a sex life back, after too much time of “starvation” (the relationship was not going well and I did not have “backup solution” during that time. Also, I was fat and ugly lately and this OF COURSE would not help). I am so happy with what I already accomplished and aim at getting to 154 lbs in the next 2 or 3 months, I know I can do it, mainly by controlling what I eat and by working out of course.

To achieve my current weight I did not really follow a specific plan, I simply have an amazing motivation (sex sex sex!!!!!!! THE MOTIVATOR). What I did was to cut out all the non healthy food and concentrate of good stuff such as fruits, vegetables, lean meat (chicken), tuna, nuts. When I crave, I am indulgent with myself and would have an ice cream or pizza, knowing that this will help me to stay strict the rest of the time. Being too strict is the ground for failure imho. Slowly but consistently loosing weight now and the more I eat well and I limit food intake, the easier it becomes to eat less. Sometimes I do not eat for a whole day, this also helps a lot. I saw the “eat stop eat” thing and feel reassured that this will not hurt as lots of people say it will. Indeed the non eating days (no more than one a week, not planned) I have maybe more energy than the other days, so this looks like a great way to reduce total calories intake in the medium term. Not least, I can see great, great results from this and results are maybe among the best motivators to keep up with the good work.

As for the workouts, I am experimenting with as many different exercises I can, to find out what I like more and what works best for me. I do all the work at home. Some free weights and lots of bodyweight exercise. Lots of pullups and pushups, getting stronger everyday. Also I try to be consistent with a simple 4 minutes tabata that I do (nearly) every day. This helps a lot, is easy to do and I did put this as a constant in my plan. Nearly everything else varies. I have a couple of sets of bodylastic bands hooked at different heights, do some of this everyday also, and recently bought a TRX trainer I am getting familiar with. So basically I am slowly building up/learning a number of different exercises so that I never get bored and can do at least something every day, choosing from different possibilities. I guess that in some time I will get to a more rational routine. Anyway whatever I do is good and works at this stage.

When I started, the very first day, I did hang myself to the pullup bar I did mount at home. I could hold the grip for just a few seconds. Forget about pulling myself up. I had my harms huting bad for the next two days. This is how bad I was. Now I can do 3 pullups in perfect form, all the way up and all the way down. I know that many with laugh at this miserable performance, however for me is a great achievement and I feel so much stronger that I was just few months ago.

So here’s the motivation: sex, sex and SEX. I am already starting to percieve that people and woman in particular see me differently now. The other day I went to cut my hair and the shompoo girl started a chat, showing obvious interest. This did not happen to me for years. The girl, in all honesty, was not worth “persuing” however it feels so good to be back in the pool of sexually attractive people I have been out of for quite too much time now.

Again thanks vince and all for the stimulating comments!

    Cheers-Ackab

  236. I work out for 3 reasons: 1) To like what I see in the mirror every day and be happy in my own skin, 2) To be easy on the eyes for my future wife (because let’s be honest here guys…happy wife, happy life right?), and 3) To fight the ravages of time. I just entered my 35th year of life and being the Generation “X” Dad that I am (I’m an avid skateboarder, snowboarder and mountain biker), I’d like to be able to do all kinda of fun things with my daughter (she just turned 3 in December) until the day she thinks it’s not cool to do things with me all the time anymore =). Seriously though, I don’t want to be one of those Dads who drops their kids off at the park or the mountain and drives away. I want to be the fit, muscular parent who parks the Element, grabs my board or bike and my daughter’s board or bike out of the back, suits up and rides with her.

I’m married to the most beautiful woman God ever put on the planet-period. She’s 51, looks hotter than her 32 year old daughter wh by the way is hot too, and when we go out, college guys are trying to pick her up the minute my back is turned. She’s not shallow and wouldn’t ever cheat on me, but I want to be pleasing to her. So I work out so that she enjoys me physically and emotionally. We have a great life together and I want to enjoy that life. I want to be able to keep up a good pace, not limp along pushing a walker. I wan to play baseball with my grandkids, and keep up, and even excel. I can also work circles around guys half my age. That’s why I work out! SOund selfish or shallow. I don’t care, it’s the truth.

  241. I started out to lose extra fat and build muscle. Since then I’ve noticed younger guys look at me in a sort of awestruck way. plus I have younger guys ask me how to get into the shape I’m in. When they find out that I’m looking 60 in the face it totally blows them away. I really enjoy that and that’s why I keep working out and eating right.

  243. I work out to be a better ice hockey player, be as healthy as a horse, get the most attractive sex partner, and for the attention I get at the beach/pool/mall. Spending time in the gym keeps me out of trouble. I work out too hard to eat anything that might be bad for me. I was skinny when I was young. I’m beefy now and I’m not looking back.

  244. Howdy
I used to think that I worked out for the sole reason of doing my job alot better. I worked on construction sites, and was also an apprentice tiler, which meant heavy lifting, long hours of muscle usage!
But now that I’ve quit that job, I continue to work out. And ever since I read this blog, it got me thinking. If I aint needing to stay strong to help my job, then why do I do it?
I guess it’s as simple as attracting people to me. And my god it has!!!

  248. Vince,
If you had asked me this a couple of years ago, I would be right with you with your answer. Now, I am happily engaged but I still want my fiance to desire me all the time. I lift because I enjoy being powerful and getting people’s respect just by looking at me. People moved out of my way with no problems. When I was in my hayday, I was built like a house. I was 6’3 and 275. I was squatting over 500 lbs, 1300lb leg presses, 500lb dead lifts and the list goes on.. l loved the looks I got from everybody in the gym when I was stacking 45lb plates all over the place. I still carried too much body fat but I was strong and you could see some definition under the fat. I took a lot of time off since then but I am getting back into things. First, I need to drop a lot of body fat. I’m 300lbs and about 40% body fat. I have been big my entire life. (25 yrs old now) I’m not at the same strength level I was but I am confident I can get back to it. I would like to be a lean 220-230lbs. My ultimate goal is to become a cop and I know I need to get in great shape to do so. I’m anxious to start this program to get those results I want.
