What You Don’t Know About Testosterone (High Testosterone = Low Body Fat)

The male hormone testosterone helps you get jacked. The higher your levels of it, the more jacked and leaner you’ll be In this article we’ll discuss how to boost your test levels naturally and with the help of legal supplements.

By Vince Del Monte

Whether you’re a recreational lifter or hardcore bodybuilder, regardless of your years in the game, these three words should resonate strongly: The next level.

In any endeavour in life,  especially physique transformation, taking your body to the next level is no easy feat. It’s mandatory to eat smart, train hard, and continue doing this for years and years on end – not weeks. If you’re really serious to advancing your physique to new levels, it’s time to look outside eating and training and consider applying tactics external to the gym for sustained muscle growth.

To start your next jump to new muscle levels, the gains you’re dying to experience, you must understand your muscle growth is predicted on the status of your body’s testosterone concentration.  High levels of endogenous testosterone mean faster growth.  On the flip, a lack of testosterone is associated to guaranteed failure for a bodybuilder or even a recreational lifter and leads to years of spinning your wheels – no matter how good your training or nutrition is.

And it gets worse, low testosterone levels impairs you in other ways, including:

  • Low-energy levels
  • Waking up without a “tent pitched” as your bed sheets
  • Declines in strength
  • Low sex drive
  • Feeling of depression
  • Muscle tissue breakdown
  • Higher body fat levels
  • Lower self esteem from a lack of confidence
  • Poor self image

In short, the more testosterone you produce, the better off your life could be.  Here are the benefits:

  • Increase in Lean Muscle
  • Reduction in Body Fat
  • Increase in Energy
  • Enhanced Sexual Performance
  • Restoration of Vital Organs
  • Stronger Immune System
  • Increase in Bone Density
  • Lower Cholesterol and Blood Pressure
  • Smoother, Firmer Skin
  • Better Vision
  • Improved Cognition & Mood

TEST PREDICTORS Testosterone is an androgenic-anabolic steroid hormone derived from cholesterol, released by the testes and adrenal cortex (in small amounts) in males. This means, a diet very low in fats is actually counterproductive; cholesterol from certain fats is necessary for testosterone production.  Sufficient blood testosterone levels is crucial for the production and maturation of sperm, maintaining the male reproductive system and libido.Levels of testosterone are also reflected in secondary sex characteristics like body composition, hair pattern, bone mass, aggression and deepening (or lowering) of the voice.  And testosterone plays a direct role in stimulating protein synthesis, and therefore a major contributor to your rate -or lack of-  muscle mass development.

High Testoterone = Low Body Fat Levels!

Testosterone Related To Weight Lifters & Bodybuilders

Here’s how testosterone levels impact your muscle gains:

1. Your strength can be boosted because of increased activation of motor nerves that contract muscle fibers. The more motor nerves stimulated, the greater the muscular development.

2. Muscle fibers are broken down far less easily because testosterone blunts muscle breakdown.

3. You stay leaner because testosterone keeps the size of fat cells from increasing and actually causes them to release more stored fat.

Looking at the individuals in your gym you’ll see many turn to the world of anabolic steroids and testosterone to accelerate and enhance muscle growing effects.  The good news is that natural trainers can boost natural levels of testosterone by supplements with products that safe and effective.

Get Your Test Levels Scored

Total testosterone levels in males (depending on testing method) should be 270-1,100 nanograms/deciliter. Understand testosterone levels decline with age.

Reference Intervals for Free Testosterone from LabCorp

* 20-29 years 9.3-26.5 picogram/mL
* 30-39 years 8.7-25.1 picogram/mL
* 40-49 years 6.8-21.5 picogram/mL
* 50-59 years 7.2-24.0 picogram/mL
* 60+ years 6.6-18.1 picogram/mL

I have a personal “Test Test” that goes likes this:

Waking up with an erection 1-2 times a week = extremely below normal testosterone levels. Go see your doctor

Waking up with an erection 3-4 times a week = less than normal testosterone levels. Fix your nutrition, lifestyle and training

Waking up with an erection 4-5 times a week = almost optimal testosterone levels. Improve your nutrition, lifestyle and training

Waking up with an erection 6-7 times a week = You’re laughing. Life is good. Your body should look spectacular

***Note: This erection assessment is not research tested!  If you want to accurately know your testosterone levels and if they are acceptable and normal then visit your physician or anti-agining clinic for hormone modulation. Blood work is necessary to know the true story about your testosterone levels.

  2. Hi Vince, I am 33 years 1.84m 81 kilos 18% body fat (I gained 14 kilos since March this year to date with a diet from The Testosterone advantage plan , I’ve been skinny all my life.

And one day a friend said to me that I had gynecomastia (I had my chest the same way since puberty but I tought that I had it like that because I didn’t work out, I didn’t realize that I had that problem I didn’t even know that term) so I did a lot of research and I had a blood test here are my results of estradiol, total testosterone ( I did not have a free T test I did not know this was the most important) and prolactin and these are the results

    Estradiol E2 48.2 pg/mL Ref. values 0 56
    Total T 14.5 nmol/L 8.4 28.7
    Prolactin 25.9 ng/mL 2.1 18

I went to a endocrinologist and she said you are ok…but I do not really think so…my E2 is almost in the maximun and T is lower than the medium and prolactine was over the maximun..that is why I had gynecomastia.

But three weeks ago I had my surgery to remove the ginecomastia now my chest looks really nice!!!

I bought 17HD a protestosterone…I have not taken any pill yet!!! but my question is…If I increase my T levels either with food (naturally) or with a protestosterone product ..my Testosterone will convert into estrogen due to aromatase?????

I will take the blood test again (after the removal of the breast tissue ) and I will include the Freee T test…I will do it at the same hour I did last time 8 am….what is the recommended hour to do this T test?

I read that Vitamin C and Zinc helps to avoid the conversion of T to estrogen…Yesterday I started taken it 50mg of zinc a day and 500mg Vit C twice a day….

    comment please!!!

  4. Hi Vince,

You’re an inspiration to me because I too am skinny, like the old Vince.

I had a prostatectomy which was completely successful for prostate cancer, but because it interrupts a feedback loop it causes my body to have difficulty maintaining its steroid base. Have you had any clients who successfully overcame this problem?

I think it’s important you are active in some shape or form each day. Ensure you are participating in a variety of your favourite sports and as you stay active you’ll see your body grow to be strong and healthy.

  12. Vince, had my level checked by my primary physician who teaches endocrinology at Harvard Medical School. The test came back borderline low. When I pointed this out he stated the test was run at 3:32PM & it shows what my level was at 3:32PM but tells us nothing about the rest of the day. He said T levels fluctuate a lot throughout the day & are almost a waste of time to get checked. Whats your take (or anybody elses) on this?

    • I would get another opinion from another hormone specialist.

So if they are borderline low at 3:32pm, is your doctor suggesting they are normal or high at other times of the day?

Sounds like you should get a second opinion.

      At least that’s my opinion.

  13. Vince, I’ve followed you and some of your recommend guys for years. You got me onto low T and getting it checked out some time ago (about 1.5 years). I’m 54, work out like crazy, and back then, couldn’t ever seem to break through barriers of physical development so that I could really fine tune my body. I pushed and pushed and pushed, and used your NNMB and other courses, but never really could break through. I got my T levels checked and was shocked to see how low they were – below 150. No wonder I felt so miserable so much! I started taking bi-monthly injections of an extremely low dose of T, 2cc’s, but this wasn’t enough. The doctor upped it to 1x a week instead of every other week. That did the trick. My T level is now mid-300, which is enough for me. More than that and an animal comes alive inside – a rather unfriendly one at that . I picked up Joel Marion’s Cheat Your Way Thin, and also, eventually, his Extreme Fat Loss programs, starting Nov 2010. Since then, I have dropped nearly 50lbs and clock in at about 158lbs and 15%bf. Finally, I look like I work out. Missing T was ALWAYS the missing piece of the puzzle. I could NEVER break through that barrier no matter how I ate and exercised (weights, soccer, running, Speed Agility Quickness training for years, etc… You get the idea.) I simply needed T. And I definitely agree with you position on ole woody!

Thank you for all of your efforts. Without you and your work, I never would have seen the change I only used to dream about.

THe media has painted a bad picture of testosterone but it’s a truly amazing hormone.

With low test levels you’re LITERALLY spinning your wheels… it does not matter how good your nutrition or training is… NO RESULTS.

Glad you got those boosted to more normal levels.

  15. Vince, great article. Please clarify 2 points about testosterone (T) blood levels:
    1) Isn’t it FREE, not TOTAL, T that determines whether one has low T? Total T = free T plus SSBG-bound T (sex-steroid binding globulin=protein)
    2) Is there an Error in units conversion? See the table above. The age-range Total T scores (in picograms/milliliter) do not jibe with the total T levels listed (in nanograms/deciliter).
    1 nanogram/deciliter = 10 picograms/milliliter.
I believe the age-range levels are for FREE Testosterone, while the 270-1,100 ng/dl are for FREE Testosterone. There is no correlation between the two. Someone can have a low TOTAL T but a normal or high FREE T if SSBG (sex-steroid binding globulin) is too low, and vice versa. This is a very important distinction, because most labs only measure TOTAL (not FREE) T, which is meaningless. Please clarify!

  18. Why should regular waking erections signify high testosterone? Perhaps an inability to get sexually aroused erections is a fairly reliable correlation, but I don’t see the significance with regular unwanted erections after sleep. What’s sleep got to do with it? What had unwanted erections got to do with it?

  19. One more thing to add is watch your circadian rhythm as well and make sure you get all your sleep before that bright sun rises cus that can also have an effect on your testosterone. Now If that’s not possible cus you work a graveyard shift, then make sure you get a black mask to cover your eyes when you sleep during the day.

  20. I’ve discovered that there are so many numerous factors that can effect how high or low your test levels can be. From personal experience alcohol and/or eating or snacking right before bedtime or anytime within 2 hours of going to bed and lack of less than 7 to 8 hours of sleep can definitely have a detriment effect on your test and morning wood in the morning.
At 44 years old I have discovered that avoiding any food for 2 hours or more before bedtime and taking sleep aids like melatonin and GABA have helped me get my 7 to 8 hours of sleep and stimulate my growth hormone and wake up with a high hard one every morning, anything less than that and I wont wake up with an erection. Hope this helps anyone out there whose over 40 or anyone struggling to meet their natural test levels.

Lift for REPS, not for max strength and your growth will not be stunted.

learn PROPER lifting technique. The main concern at your age is SAFE and EFFECTIVE technique.

  25. Hi there!
Vince – You’re a great coach but this time I’m sure that You’ve served us some bullshit… that ‘erections test’ just fails. I can say that, ’cause in my case it look like that: 2 years ago I had lower muscle mass, higher fat, lower mood and energy, lower immune system, even lower agression level – than today (and I didn’t eat broccoli:)). And I had erections many times a month but today it’s only once per few months… I’m 25 and I’m absolutely not sexually disabled or something. It just shows that sexual activity and testosterone level are not so clearly connected.

  26. First of all, congratulations on your new physique. You’re continuing to help thousands of guys worldwide and I truly hope you get to your wish of one million. Anyways, I am trying to accumulate 150 grams of protein or more a day. I’m a junior in high school, 16 years old, tan, italian, almost 17, and I’m looking to gain 10-20 pounds of muscle. I’m just sick of being rejected by girls and although I’m a little skinny and ripped, I’d like to gain more weight. I only look truly jacked when I’m pumped up after a hard workout. People can probably only tell I have muscle when I take off my shirt. Other than that, my muscles don’t show that much unless I flex, which I’m sick of doing all the time. I just want to be able to put on that shirt, not have to flex, or flex my 6 pack, and be able to show girls how nice of a guy I am. I also want that respect from all the jocks. I use to be a high school athlete, but now I have work (5-8 pm on wednesdays and thursdays). I work out really hard in the gym, and eat really healthy. My hormones are high because I’m a teenager, and I won’t masturbate because that testosterone is needed for muscle. It’s been a week, and I think I’m lucky enough to gain one pound. Is it possible to consume over 150 grams each day even with school. I’m 5’9, 150 pounds, single digit body fat, I’m mostly all muscle.

This is what I have been eating or trying to eat everyday:
Breakfast: orange juice, milk with cereal or oatmeal, wheat toast, a banana, grapes or some fruit
Mid-lunch: Tyson chicken sandwiches (18g protein total)
Lunch(12:00): Extra lean ground turkey sandwich (26g protein), yogurt with peanuts (9 g protein), water, apple, carrots, fiber-one bar, cheez-its or wheat thins (once a week or two)
After workout (4:15):60 g protein shake (12 g egg whites, 40 g protein powder, 8 g milk) (only workout days)
Dinner: Chicken breast (23 g protein)
Before bed (8:00 pm): chicken breast (23 g protein)
I wake up at 5:45 am, go to school from 7:25 am to 2:45 pm, workout til 4:00 pm, then come home.
I try to consume 150 or more grams of protein a day, but it’s tough. I don’t worry so much about carbs because I eat a lot of fruits and vegetables, plus my mom still makes dinner with rice, mixed vegetables, salad, corn, potatoes. Lentil soup is good too. I also consume 90 oz of water or more throughout the day. It’s hard to keep up with homework, the whole weight-gaining programs, and get enough sleep.

This was what I bought this week
-chicken breast tenders (64 oz of chicken)
-frozen chicken breasts (48 oz total, 7 total chicken breasts)
    – extra lean ground turkey (26 g protein, 5 servings 26 x 5=130 grams)
    -carrots (for lunches)
    -turkey burgers (16 g each, 12 servings = 192 grams)
    -3 cartons of 100% egg whites (5 g protein servings, 10 servings a carton)
I’m unsure what to eat at my mid-lunch meal since it’s at 9:00 am, I have gym class after. However, I have block scheduling, so it’s every other day.

I usually boil my chicken. We also have 100% virgin olive oil too, so I don’t know how much I should have of that.

My family thinks I’m crazy for eating all of this, and say I’ll have kidney problems. My uncle is like me with a fast metabolism, and he says just eat the regular food and work out.

Thank you for your time Mr. Delmonte, you are the only guy I trust when it comes to weight-gaining. I want to gain muscle, not a lot of fat. Make my muscles really pop out, and not have to flex. My goal is to get up to 165-170 pounds by November 1,2011. Is it possible if I consume 150 grams of protein or more a day? I just pray that I’m able to gain the weight and not waste my money if it isn’t going to work. I have to save money for college and a car. I gained maybe one pound this week, and I don’t even know if it’s muscle or fat. Thank you so much for your time, I appreciate your expertise-advice. You deserve nothing but the best.

    Your fan and supporter,
    Joe

    • Hi Joe.

      A few things.

      1. Masturbation will not affect your testosterone levels. That’s a myth. As long as you have enough zinc in your diet you’ll produce testosterone. Now you know.

      2. Total calories is more important than protein when it comes to muscle growth. 150 grams is a good place to start though.

      3. I want you to focus on ONE thing this month – consume at least 1 cup of veggies (ANY TYPE) with EACH meal. That’s it. Keep doing everything else you’re doing the same. The veggies will help you absorb and digest your food.

      5. 150 grams of protein will not lead to kidney problems. Remember, I’m NOT a doctor. That’s just my opinion from what I’ve read.

Make sure you’re following one of my programs and you’ll do great. Proud of your decision to chase after your goals.

      Vince

      • “sex, masturbation, and erotic stimuli will cause an increase in T levels.” – NNMD, page 57.
Did this change since the book was published? Haha I am now confused as to if it’s a myth or truth.

  27. Damn that’s not what i wanted to read.. i havent had morning wood in at least 3 months or more and even when i do it’s like a once a week deal.

I never thought it was hurting my results. I’m like 17 bro. i thought i wouldnt have to worry about my T because with my age it’d be at an all time high.

    Should i worry?

    • If you get an erection only once a month and you’re 17… that’s not right.

I’m NOT a doctor or a specialist in hormone therapy but I would suggest looking at your diet first:

      – Try eating quality fats – mixed nuts, avocado, olive oil, almond butter, coconut butter with each meal. Small amounts with each meal.

      – Ensure you’re sleeping at least 8 hours a night.

Focus on those 2 things for a month and see what happens….

  28. Hi Vince.
Yea testosterone as we all know by now is very important, however I do think that it is another one if those “scary stories” to make us think we need some kind if help. I am a 36 year old man and my morning erections are a lot more scarce than they used to be. Yet I am as horny as any guy. So perhaps I do have low test levels in the morning and most definitely my test levels are lower than a younger dude. However, I don’t think this is unnatural/ cause for concern. I think guys should just go work their asses of in gym instead of always finding a gremlin to blame. I finished NNMB a while back. I’m muscular and lean and with so few morning erections I should be inserious trouble yet I’m ‘al
good’. Love you buddy but please don’t scare us into buying stuff we don’t really need.

    • Hi Andre.

The reason for this post is to not sell any testosterone booster or scare you guys into thinking you need legal supplement products. There are certain ingridients with many clinical studies that will “boost” your test levels – not to super physiological levels – to a degree and you’re free to experiment with them if you wish.

I’m NOT a doctor and I highly recommend if this is an area of your life your uncertain about, visit your doctor, get your levels checked and go from there.

It all depends on your goals too – if you’re a competitive bodybuilder, don’t expect to grow – NO MATTER how hard you train or how clean you eat – you’ll spin your wheels and get no where if your test levels are sub optimal.

Remember, my morning erection test has no research or science behind it but I’m confident that it’s a good starting point for a conversation with your doctor or a hormone specialist. I’m neither of those so we’re clear!

  31. Eating more saturated fat will Jack up your levels of testosterone and good healthy cholesterol. Too much sugar, white flour and industrialized plantseed oils cause inflammation, low testosterone and the small dense VLDL (bad) cholesterol. Egg yolks, butter and coconut oil is great sources og healthy saturated fats. It works and its all natural!

    • Thanks Finn. Eating lean red meat every day, a variety of proteins, mixed nuts, avocado, sleeping 8 hours a day, avoiding excess alcohol, managing stress and good old fashioned hard training and lifting are the areas YOU can control in optimizing test levels.

  32. @Dave… in order to have libido and sex your T is at high level, once you are “done” (on sex)it declines and starts to produce or recover so having more sex or masturbation should increase your test production … also as well as growth hormone it is produced at higher level/rate when youre asleep.
IT IS A GREAT ARTICLE! few things like the picograms, it is NANOGRAMS. and about the “morning wood” it looks silly but it is a good sign if you need to go to the Dr. or not. IT´S TIME TO PAY ATTENTION OF WHAT OUR BODY SAYS!!!

    • Go see a doctor and get your levels checked. If they are genuinely low, they’ll put you on HRT- injections every 10 weeks or so… artificial testosterone to correct your levels.

      • I don’t believe Artificial Testosterone is the answer im trying to raise it naturally. But ive read its kind of a up hill battle and that if your hormones are truly in the tank no amount of exercise is gonna fix it. Or at least that is what Dr.Jeff Life says hes a big promoter of bio-identical hormones for anti-aging.

        • Believe it or not, systematic fasting has been shown to increase the level of HGH. I did not believe it until I tried. I dropped from 212 to 194 and am stronger. For a good plan check out Eat Stop Eat by Brad Pilon. If you do not want to purchase the program, just read his blog and you should know what to do.

        • Hi Ricardo.

Bio-identical hormones for anti-aging is going to get VERY VERY popular over the next 5-10 years. Mark my words. It’s the unspoken secret of the celebrity world. How do you think they all manage to all look so young and beautiful in their 40s, 50s and 60s? I mean, if you can afford to look and feel like you did when you were 25 years old… I understand why it’s so popular.

The only thing – bio identical hormone replacement is NOT cheap and something you’ll have to maintain for the rest of your life. Again, a conversation to have with your doctor.

It all depends how good you want to feel and look.

I usually don’t get morningwood, and I have very little facial and body hair, except for my legs and pubes. Also I look very young, still like a kid. How can I increase my testosterone levels? I do have your NNMB, but i don’t think it is included in that.

  35. 2 comments about testosterone (T) levels:
    1) It is FREE, not TOTAL, T that determines whether one has low T.
    2) Error in units conversion? See the table above. The age-range Total T scores (in picograms/milliliter) do not jibe with the total T levels listed (in nanograms/deciliter).
    1 nanogram/deciliter = 10 picograms/milliliter.
I believe the age-range levels are for FREE Testosterone, while the 270-1,100 ng/dl are for FREE Testosterone. There is no correlation between the two. Someone can have a low TOTAL T but a normal or high FREE T if SSBG (sex-steroid binding globulin) is too low, and vice versa. This is a very important distinction, because most labs merely measure TOTAL (not FREE) T, which is meaningless. Please clarify!

      • The myth about “sex leading to low test levels” is complete BS… I believe it routed from the association of sweating while having sex… when you sweat, you lose the vital mineral zinc that leads to test production…. As long as you’re taking in enough zinc a day… you’re fine.

        • I too believe the same. But when it come to masturbation,I hear a lot of people saying about its bad effects.how can it be possible, our internal organs don’t know if a girl is with us during an orgasm or not. so effect of sex on T level should be same as effect of masturbation.

And is it good for a man to avoid orgasms for a long time? we will become crazy. We will newer feel relaxed and cool. and hence our cortisol levels hike up. This will lower T levels.

  37. How about testosterone and women. You know waning levels effect women too…along with their other hormones….but they all are an important factor in body fat levels, maintaing muscle mass etc. Since you touched on the male factor maybe Flavia should present the female factor. I know for myself, I was tested through saliva and found low levels of all three hormones as well as very low DHEA and cortisol. BTW I am a female, 51, but still maintain a lean body, muscular but it can be a struggle. I have done some things to help increase my levels but it is also hard taking all the stuff needed to “turn back time” …..bioidenticals, DHEA , among others. In addition I have reevaluated my diet and started to up my fats but still keep my carbs low. I’m doing well.
Very interesting content here….very confusing as well. I hope to hook up with someone to really sort things out.
    Anyone have some insight????

    • Dianne- although I am only 48, I also had some insight when tested I had low everything-hormones, DHEA and Cortisol. I am not a DR by any means – but this is what my holistic Dr did for me. He told me to stop eating sugar of any form- even fruit for 6-8 weeks, add healthy fats, then come back and get tested. I also took a supplement called “adreno build” for 6 weeks. All my stuff went back to normal except my testosterone. I got on bio identical hormones and am fine now. although my test is not high(it is on the low range of normal)- I am still good with everything else. Did sugar cause my numbers to go low?? It seems that way. I started eating fruit again but only with meals and still no processed foods or sugar except a treat on a special occiasion. I have red that sugar especially is bad for older women. hope this helps.

On analyzing this blog and my body, i think that my T levels are sufficiently high. but one problem. I have very —–little body and facial hair, is this a problem? can it be due to low T level?—– I have sufficient muscle mass, i newer gain fat, my overall health is good, and i’m happy about my sex drive.

I don’t think hair has anything to do with it as long as the hair that you do have are still growing and healthy. I have some Indonesian ancestry and some Khoi-Khoi ancestry and this makes me kinda naked in the facial and body hair department. See it as a blessing. We don’t have to wax our backs.
