RIP Jack LaLanne: Sept. 26, 1914 – January 23, 2011.

Fitness lost its godfather yesterday to complications from one of the worst diseases you can have: Pneumonia. I never met Jack but I know he inspired MILLIONS.  LaLanne revolutionized the fitness industry with his television appearances and is credited with launching the modern fitness movements, as he urged American’s to eat better and exercise more well before calorie counting and fad fitness programs were popular.

LaLanne reportedly ate healthy and worked out often even in his later years, joking in 2006, “I can’t afford to die. It would wreck my image.”  In the wake of his death, Jack LaLanne’s wife, Elaine, released a written statement.

“I have not only lost my husband and a great American icon, but the best friend and most loving partner anyone could ever hope for,” Elaine said.

LaLanne was popular among viewers of all ages, and urged Americans to better themselves through dietary changes and increased exercise, even before obesity became an epidemic.

“The only way you can hurt the body is not use it,” LaLanne explained. “Inactivity is the killer and, remember, it’s never too late.”

In addition to his television workout shows, LaLanne was known for his impressive feats of fitness, including swimming from Alcatraz Island to San Francisco while shackled and towing a boat at the age of 60, and performing more than 1,000 push-ups in 23 minutes shortly after turning 43.

LaLanne helped break established rules of fitness in his day, by encouraging athletes and women to use weights during workouts — both groups were forbidden to prior to LaLanne’s intervention.  So innovative and influential was LaLanne that he drew compliments from some of the most famous fitness gurus from every age.

“He laid the groundwork for others to have exercise programs, and now it has bloomed from that black and white program into a very colorful enterprise,” said Arnold Schwarznegger.

Indeed, LaLanne’s contributions to fitness will never be forgotten, as they revolutionized the industry.  We at the Del Monte Family express our sincerest condolences to those LaLanne left behind. You can learn more about Jack LaLanne’s juicer, fitness program, DVDs and other exploits by searching his name on Amazon.  Look him up and order some of his stuff.  He’s the true Godfather of Fitness.

Honour Jack today by watching this short video and taking his message to heart and do something about the timeless truth he shared decades ago that is just as true now as it was then.

  3. IN MY CONCERNED OPINION AND EVEN THOUGH I CANNOT CALL HIM MY “GURU” DIRECTLY BUT HE CERTAINLY WAS THE BEST, DESPITE THE FACT THAT THERE WERE HUNDREDS WITH BIGGER BODY MUSCLES etc. BUT ITS NOT ONLY THE HUGE MUSCLES ITS HOW YOU THINK ABOUT YOUR BODY AND I DO NOT THINK OF ANY EQUAL TO “GURUJI JACK LaLANE”, HE WAS A PHENOMENAL PERSON.HIS FEAT OF PULLING THE BOATS AT LONG BEACH WAS SOMETHING NO OTHER HUMAN HAD ACCOMPLISHED ,CONSIDERING THE AGE LIMITATIONS.
WE ALL SALUTE THIS GOD OF BODY BUILDERS ,THE TRUE GURU IN THE FIELD.GOD BLESS HIM AND SEND HIM BACK TO THIS WORLD SINCE HE HAS LOTS MORE TO ACCOMPLISH BY SAVING MILLIONS OF COUCH POTATOES.
    GOD BLESS YOU JACK.

It’s times like this people like him remind us of the wake up calls we need sometimes. It’s so easy to worry about what people think about things, or maybe worrying about finishing things on time. We get so over worried that we forget to take a step back and breathe. Thanks Vince.

A true man of God has left this earth. Jack LaLane’s passion was sharing revealed truth about his knowledge of the human body and prolonging its longevity. He gained this tremendous knowledge over the course of a dedicated lifetime of 96 years and impacted millions of lives. One of the most influential for me was Jacks view on the importance of recognizing and realizing the connection between the body, soul and spirit in man. There is no one else like him in that regard! Thank you Jack for all you have done! enjoy your new body! You will be temporarily missed! Save me a seat and may God bless and protect your loving wife Elaine LaLanne.

Rest in Peace Jack LaLanne! He truly was a very influential person in my life from a very young age. I want to be in that great of shape until my final day.

  22. Beverly says:

I used to watch Jack’s fitness show when I was an itty-bitty kid. While the jumpsuit and plimsolls were a bit disturbing, I was fascinated. It wasn’t until I grew up and fully understood the implications of his accomplishments (1000 pushups?) that I became hooked on observing his life. I still watch his juicer ads just to marvel. He was a true inspiration.

  23. Alex says:

    What a character !!
Just the way he talks, and what he talks about makes us look at what this man knew so much time ago..
For sure an example for us all and even for generations to come !!
    R.I.P. Jack
