Featured Body Transformation: Tom Bodd

By Vince Del Monte, WBFF Pro Fitness Model, Certified Fitness Trainer and Nutritionist and author of No Nonsense Muscle Building.

Meet Tom Bodd, from Creston, British Columbia.  Tom was the 1st place grand prize winner of my first 16-Week Transformation Contest with Maximize Your Muscle.  Probably the most impressive transformation I’ve ever seen! Check out the

“I probably don’t fit your typical readership as I am 53 years old. The way you introduced your program caught my eye as you said it was geared towards people that have been training for awhile and didn’t shy away from hard work. That was enough to get me in. Honestly, when I think about it I believe it was your work ethic that I have seen and some of your comments about the way some or I should say most people “exercise” that made me take action and say this was for me.

I absolutely loved Vincesanity! Strength and endurance through the roof and started to get cuts where I never thought possible on me. Your insights for living life, the wisdom you have already gathered for a young man of 30, your passion to develop the human body all come through in your material. I would encourage anyone young or not so young, if you don’t like what you see or who you see in the mirror get off your butt, take action and get your life back! ”

TOM BODD
CRESTON, BRITISH COLUMBIA

—————————————————-

Vince: When did you start bodybuilding?

Tom: I have played around with BB since I was young…probably like the rest of the guys in Maximize Your Muscle and the rest of your readers but when I was young there wasn’t this kind of info available like there is today.  About 8 years ago I had a tragedy in our family so I had to find an outlet for myself, so I would say in the last 7 years I started kickboxing and then a few years later I did some casual weight training on my own. Nothing to serious. I’ve been reading your material for quite sometime now and when you introduced Maximize Your Muscle as an advanced program I became very interested in that. In the last 5 months I have made the most consistant gains in the last 5 years.

Vince: What was your biggest obstacle in changing your body at age 53?Tom-Bodd-Vince-DelMonte

Tom: My biggest challenge is keeping myself injury free. I didn’t stretch and warm up anything like I do today. Again following your program as you lay it out. Stretching and proper warm ups have kept me pretty healthy.

Vince: Tell us about your results using Maximize Your Muscle in the past four months.

Tom: My results have been the most consistant in the last four months than they,ve been in the last 5 years. Each month builds on the previous month. Before it was hit and miss but this way one leads into the next so I just kept improving. My strength and shape have changed the most.

Vince: You mentioned that “age is just a number” What does that mean and do you think that any 53 year old can build a body like yours?

Tom: Yes 53 is just a number. To me being 53 brings advantages not disadvantages. At 53 a person should have alot more wisdom, and discipline than someone half my age. My discipline and focus work to my advantage.  I don’t believe in excuses. I believe that anyone with a goal or desire to change them selves can do so.  Just get the right information, apply it with consistency, adjust where needed and you will arrive at your target.

Vince: What separates your mindset from other males your age?

Tom: I don’t think like everyone else. If you tell me it can’t be done I’ll do it anyway just to prove it can be done. I don’t give up and I go harder than anyone I know, well almost anyone!

Vince: What would the #1 secret you maximized to get your razor sharp jaw dropping abs?

Tom: Ahhh the abs. When I train I try to focus my mind and make a connection between that and the muscle I’m working on. Abs are no different. I use a slower than normal rep tempo and really squeeze the abs, also stretch them out often.

Vince: What does your daily nutrition plan look like?

Tom: Nutrition is very basic. I have a huge breakfast as soon as I get up with both carbs and protein. I eat 5-7 times a day consuming most of my carbs in the top half of the day. I eat only prepared foods and never eat anything out of a box. Pretty basic really.

Bodybuilder-Tom-Boddy-Transformation

Vince: In your testimonial above you mentioned that “The way most people train is a complete joke.” Elaborate on that and what mistakes can our readers avoid so they don’t waste their time.

Tom: Oh oh I could get in trouble here but you asked.  Most, a very high percentage of people go to the gym and think it’s a social event. Did you come here to work or to chat it up with all your buddies? They do the same workouts day after day month after month they don’t change anything so they don’t change. There is no sense of urgency. It’s just a waste of time for them, but they think they are doing great.

When I work out it’s not a real pleasant experience and I don’t believe it should be. If you want to push your body to look different you have to challenge it not baby it.  It will take it but it will not be comfortable. Most people don’t like to be uncomfortable so they just coast and the results show that too.

Vince: Are you married? What do your kids and wife think of your insane body?

Tom: I have two kids. My daughter doesn’t say much but my son and I compete with each other. He inspires me to go as hard as I do because I do the same for him. He is very very proud of his Dad.

Vince: Do you use any supplements?

Tom: I just use the basics: protein powders, creatine and glutimine, and efa’s (essential fatty acides). Nothing fancy. I don’t believe that all that fancy shit they sell to these young guys does anything. I just eat whole foods, that’s enough for me.

Vince: Do you apply any special recovery stategies in the last four months, especially phase 2 when you where working out sometimes 5 days aweek and the workouts were as much as 90 minutes long? Does your body respond better to high or lower volume workouts?

Tom: I ice my legs after a heavy leg day. I find that helps my out alot. As far as phase 2: after the first week it didn’t bother me to much. I just make sure I get enough sleep/ rest. If I don’t sleep well I’m in trouble. I just don’t have the energy if I’m tired I’m in bed by 10pm. Ya, I know that’s boring but that is what works for me. I respond better to high voume training for sure.

Vince: What are your final words of wisdom to males over 40 who want to look like you?Tom-Bodd-No-Nonsense-Muscle-Building

Tom: More trouble. I would tell them to STOP making excuses far themselves and justify why they are the way they are. Set a goal. Get a clear picture of what you want to look like by a certain time and then arrive at that point. Once you arrive, set another goal or get another picture of yourself and go again.

Rome wasn’t built in a day and you won’t be there in 2 months either, but you have to start sometime if that is your desire. Get the right information, apply it with consistency and conviction, clean up your diets, and watch your self grow into something brand new!!

  1. Wow! What an inspiration. Tom you’ve given me the push I need. I turn 50 this year and you are the ‘benchmark’ to follow. Well done mate!!

  2. Thank you ever so much, TOM!

You gave the best example for any man, including me.

Your results told me, a 73 year young man, that I also could do something to my own body.

So I took part of the summer to autumn competition and to my big, really big surprise I was told, that I placed 2nd!

I know very well, that my results were not as good as I was hoping, but the difference in “before” and “after” photos was probably so big, that I was voted into the second place…

Anyway, you are my favorite since I gave my vote for you, of course, but also because your moderate attitude and respect you showed towards Vince and his efforts.

I understand, that weightlifting sport makes a man a better person, if we continue our efforts to build our whole personality.
Obviously you Tom have succeeded in this in an admirable way, congratulations!

Let us never forget these 2010 months of great success, Tom, but let us also keep and increase, what we have achieved both bodily and mentally.

I admire you Tom, and wish you happiness into time definite.

    Aimo

  3. Hi Bill …again thankyou for your compliments. With regards to your questions the first thing I would do is get a good workout program into place….I don’t know what level of fitness you are at but you need a definite plan as to what you are going to do everyday that you go to the gym. Don’t just show up and wing it. MYM is great because everything is laid out step by step and it changes every month. It is intense though. The second thing I would do is look at what I;m eating. If it’s in a box and has things in it that you can’t pronounce then you shouldn’t eat it. That would be a great example for your family and that alone will boost your health 100fold atleast. NO JUNK in the house only whole raw foods prepared from scratch. If you get these two things alone dialed I am very confident you will see a major change in yourself. Good luck, Tom@Bill -

  6. Hey Salyris….glad to see I’ve done some good for you. The next 2-3% will make you look transformed from where you are now and it will come fairly quicck and if you go further watch out you will blow yourself away, however it is trickier to get that last 2% off. Best of luck to you!!! Tom @salyris -

  7. First, huge Kudos to you Tom !!! You showed age is JUST a number, that our thoughts make our reality, especially if tempered with that wisdom of experience in us older-young guys ;-)

Have a question for you Tom. What would your advice be for a 5o year young guy to increase lean muscle density and health, including nutrition for a busy husband and father who wants to lead by example?

Again, super inspiring your progress and Continued Success to you Tom !!!

A Great day begins with a Great workout !!

  8. @Becky – Tom is at extremely low levels of bodyfat in his after picture (i’d estimate as low as 4%). Keeping in mind that bodyfat is reduced over your entire body it’s a fair assumption that he lost fat around the face causing a more sunken look and perhaps making him look at bit older.

That said he looks 100x better in his after picture. Congrats Tom, well deserved winner.

  11. Hi Andria…..I think the problem with people today is this instant gratification stuff. No commitment just want it quick and now. The best way you could change yourself is get a program …MYM for eg. then follow it to a T and month after month you will see yourself changing. That is very motivating. The more you see the more motivated you will become then you will be unstoppable. End result…your patience and hard work has paid off. Good luck!!@andria sanchez -

  22. Hey Brian…nice to see another senior that didn`t die when he turned 30. I would need more info than this but a quick couple of things u could try are….look at the amount of carbs you are taking in and also when are you consumming them. Minimum amout of carbs for say 3 days consummed at breakky only and then in your post workout shake only, your forth day would be a higher carb day but again only in the first part of your day, just so you don`t slow down the metab. to much. Keep cycling this back and forth and see what happens with this. Get a ribbon tape measure and take your stomach measurement first thing inthe am as soon as you get out of bed and have a p. I f after a week your measurement changes you knoe it is working. The other thing is are you taking your efa,s and when ….take themlast hing in the evening this way your body is burning your own fat all day for energy and not the fat you are ingesting during the day.
I hope this may help you, but feel free to pm me if you wish on the MYM web site under Tom Bodd. Good luck Brian

  23. Hey Jim …I think I feel your pain. Ihave bad elbows too. I think it depends on how sore they really are. Sometimes I can do a good warm up and it goes away but if they are really sore my advice would be to let it rest and ice the crap out of it. Sounds like inflammation. If you have a good Chinese Herbalist tell him what you are going through. I had my guy give me some stuff that I made 5 doses of some horrible liqiud that I had to drink and I can honestly say the elbows are much much better. By the way how young are you? This may help you..I know sometimes a guy is not to motivated to get the job done but look at it this way, you can either go into it half assed or you are there anyway so why not give it everything you have…you will feel much better about it and yourself…I know this to be true.

As far as work goes, again eating properly helps with energy, alot of prep, but it’s done in one day for the week pretty much and I don’t get to worked up about much…it burns valuable energy, energy for the hurt box! I hope this helps.@rishi -

  27. Hey Guys……Tom Bodd here, thankyou all for your compliments! I am both flattered and humbled. I’ve read that the best form of flattery is to copy the person you are flattering. I would like nothing more than to be able to return the compliments to each and everyone of you. I’m nobody special, just someone that doesn’t accept ordinary from himself. Really …if you give everything in your lives 110% including your workout ethics you will very shortly become EXTRA ORDINARY!!! When you can look at yourself in the mirror and know you gave it everything you had this day, everything changes. Don’t accept average from your self anymore and you can achieve anything you want…..including a great body!!

    Thanks again guys, Tom

Since I am a women, for me its not about getting big or ripped .. I just have things I want to achieve with my body in terms of the look I am after. And you are right, there NO EXCUSES!! I am 50 and it is nice to see us old school guys get after it. One quick question for you. I am pretty ripped , but my abs area sticking point for me. I can't seem to shed that last bit of fat over the abs. Any tips or advice. I eat very clean and 100% organic, but I know it must be something diet related. Congrats on all the hard work. You are a credit to your age group.
I've got a couple of years on you and have been using Navy SEAL program (PT only-not running and swimming!!) of high volume of dips, chin-ups and push-ups. Have enjoyed good results. However, recently insides of both arms have become painful. Haven't done more than in the past. Should I work past pain, or change the program? I really prefer body weight exercise over weights.
    Thanks, in advance.
    Jim

Tom did an amazing job on the program and you’re going to sit there and belittle his efforts because you accept mediocrity in your own life because you’re likely too weak to achieve excellence? I’m not typically one to throw stones, but your comment was not only out of line but just absurd considering that this is a bodybuilding forum. Why the hell are you even on here if you think being 20 lbs overweight is acceptable?

Anyway, I’m sure you’re late for your Curves appointment so you better run along now.

  39. Fantastic Tom. Your dedication and drive is stellar and a glaring example of what is lacking in general society. Great job sir. Doesn't looking good and feeling good make life so much better? Congratulations to finding a program that speaks to you so well.

    Kudos to you too Vince.

  42. Wow….it is great to see someone over 40 highlighted!! I'm 43 and into Phase 3..and while my gains are nothing like his, my foundation wasn't as solid as his.
It is amazing how lean he is…and once you plow past 30 and then 40..and are in good condition you know how rare it is to see. To be over 50 and in excellent shape…that is again, WOW!

I am a fan of no nonsense responses….lets not make life more complicated then it already is..

  45. This guy rocked the program. I hope to see results close to that when i am finished. I am almost done phase 2, and still gaining a couple pounds. I hope I can see similar results, that would be fantastic.

    • Hey Jean
You must be one of those useless pieces of s#*t Tom Bod is talking about. Your either a skinny pencil neck, or an overweight fat f#*k who sits home @ night and stuffs chips down your face for comfort. The world is full of critics like you, all talk no action. Feel free to prove me wrong and post some pictures of yourself! And even if you are (which i doubt) in any kind of shape, you have no right to pick this guy apart. He looks AWSOME!!! Enough with the negative, Tom Bod you look fantastic!!! You're an inspiration to us all young and old! Congrats on an awsome physique and a well deserved win!
