Top 60 Things I Learned in 2009

By

Vince Del Monte, WBFF Pro Fitness Model, Certified Fitness Trainer
and Nutritionist and author of No Nonsense Muscle
Building.

At the end of each year I reflect on my my physical, intellectual (business), relational and spiritual journey.  This past year has been the biggest year of my life.  I have made breakthroughs in all areas.

Let me know what which one you liked the most and then post one thing you learned in 2009.

By the way, “learning” has three different levels:

Level zero learning = a new insight or new piece of info

Level one learning = a action that is taken from the new insight or piece of info

Level two learning = a behavior change and transformation occurs from the new insight or piece of info.

Below you’ll notice I share a mixture of all three levels of learning from the past year.

Top 60 Things I Learned In 2009

1. Twitter is annoying.  Facebook still my favorite form of social media.

2. Nightly “to do” lists are still the most effective way for me to accomplish my daily tasks.

3. The most important degree I got this year was a Degree in G.S.D. Get Shit Down. Create your G.S.D. checklist before you go to bed each night for the next day.

4. Not checking email until 3pm in the afternoon helps me be 10x more productive.

5. The most important question I asked, “Is the path I’m going down now going to attract the girl of my dreams?”

6. Tens attract tens.  Fives attract fives.  Fives don’t attract tens.  If you want to marry a ten out of ten and you’re a five out of ten then you better start working on yourself fast because the fives are going to find you!

7. Getting a pre-paid credit card will change your life.  The entire psychology of using a pre-paid credit card (putting your own money on the card) will change your spending habits and change your life completely.  Use pre-paid credit card! Seriously, sign up for one today.

8. Stop focusing on finding and looking for the right person and start focusing on becoming the right person. Every day you spend looking is another day you’ve lost growing and attracting the right person into your life. I should have listened to my Mom when she told me this 15 years ago.

9. You can’t help people who don’t want to help themselves.

10. People don’t want you to change because they will not be able to control the puppet strings they have on your life anymore.

11. Buying a Blackberry turned into a Crackberry. I’m still working on managing this little guy…..

12. The last season of Entourage was spectacular.  I didn’t want the season finale to stop…

13. Dexter is the only T.V. show this year that was worth the investment of my time.  Sometimes depressing but incredibly thrilling.  I can’t get enough of Dexter (I’m mid way through season 3 and hear season 4 is even better).

14. Security is boring. Security is for cadavers.

15. Muscle is best built in 3-week spurts.  Go full-throttle for 3-weeks and then back off for 1-week and then repeat the cycle.  Every 3-weeks you have something new, stimulating and challenging to look forward to.

16. Searching for perfection is the quickest way to fail.

17. Living a life of significance is more important than living a life of success.

18. Muscle and six-packs can be used as an honorable platform to inspire and serve your loved ones by being a positive role model.  Muscle and six-packs can go beyond vanity, self-image and ego.

19. My loved ones benefit from the investment into my body more than I benefit. When you don’t take care of yourself, not only do you suffer but the people around you suffer too. Not taking care of your body is very selfish.

20. Don’t expect life to be fair to you.  Who ever said life was supposed to be fair anyways?

21. If you want your problems solved you need to do it yourself.

22. Creating a separate email account for business newsletters and one for personal email saved me 60 minutes a day.

23. Be yourself because everyone else is taken.

24. The biggest limit you need to overcome in your life, to live the life of your dreams, is your mind.

25. Always give before you take. End every phone call and email with, “Let me know if there is anything I can do for you.”  Mean it if you’re going to say it.

26. The most successful people in life gives a lot of their info away for free.

27. Driving a Laborghini at 200mph was the most exhilarating experience this past year.

28. Meeting my girlfriends 16 brothers and sisters in one weekend was a close second. Having all 7 of her brothers take me out on the town was equally intimidating.

29. I have a whole new level of respect for men who have proposed to their wives. Wow!  I never expected my adrenaline to sky-rocket so fast.

20. The best birthday present you can give yourself is a wife 🙂

21. Setting this rule with my fiance after the first 2 dates: “There is no need to talk about our pasts unless the conversation will bring us closer together.” I know nothing about Flavia’s past and she knows nothing about mine. By focusing on the present and future we have avoided so much unnecessary stress and heartache. And we have given each other the opportunity to be the person we both really want to be.

22. Deadlines are the most powerful forms of influence. All of my biggest breakthroughs and accomplishments happened because I had a deadline associated with it. Speaking events, photo shoots, trips, product launches, celebration parties and most importantly – proposing!

23. You need to schedule fun, especially as you get older.  Seriously, if you have not had a vacation in over a year… GO! That is more important than anything else – I don’t care what excuses you have.  GO ON A VACATION.

24. Hollywood needs more rising teen stars like Tristan Lautner to inspire Generation Y to pack on some muscle.

25. 24-hour fasting has been the healthiest addition to my nutrition program.  Including one 24-hour at least two times a month from Sunday 6pm to Monday 6pm has helped me sleep better, lean down and feel cleaner and be more productive.

26. Learning how to tell stories is the most powerful and most persuasive way to make your point.

27. Receiving before and after pictures from you and my readers and reading your success stories on my blog and via email are still the highlight of my day.

28. Figure out what your top 5% is.  What is the 5% of activities in your life that can ONLY be done by you and that produce the most productivity in your life?  Once you list that 5%, outsource everything else.  Outsourcing things like cleaning my house, taking care of my yard and shoveling my driveway were not productive uses of my time (and I hate those things anyways) so it makes no sense in doing them.

29. Keep asking yourself, “Why do I want what I want?” Remind yourself of the reasons why you are chasing certain goals.

30. If you can live large inside the gym then you can live large outside of the gym.  If you can have a world class body there is no reason you can not have a world class relationship, world class business or world class lifestyle.

31. Incorporating fast days and extreme cheat days into my nutrition program made the biggest difference in my physique this pat year.

31. High frequency training is necessary the more advanced you become.  And 5-day whole body workouts actually work.  They are stimulating, invigorating and challenging.

32. Using my juicer and having a detox drink of cucumbers, celery, asparagus and lemon each day kept me sick-free, again this year (I have not been sick in years btw).

33. Cutting carbs after 6pm kept me around 10% bodyfat lower all year round.

34. Stair climbing is the most effective way to burn fat quickly.

35. Double espresso and/or a Americano (double shot) give me a better workout than any other pre-workout supplement.

36. Taking ZMA every night and a high dosage (10 grams) of fish oils before bed gives me the best qualtity sleep ever.

37. The grass is not greener on the other side.  The grass is green where you water it. Think of that in terms of relationships.

38. If you have a hobby or passion or obsession that keeps you up at night then right now is the time to cash in on that passion.  Use the power of the Internet to turn your real passion into a real business.

39. I spent over $35,000 in personal business coaching this past year, my biggest year ever, and my business continued to double which proves you can’t ever stop investing in yourself if you want to grow.

40.  There is no such thing as coasting in life.  You are either dying or your’re growing.  There is a myth that you can stay the same and it’s not true.

41.  It’s better to be your own man than let anyone label you or your life.  Don’t get caught up in the hype of being an Alpha Male or any other random benchmark for manhood and manliness.  All you need to be is a Man.

42. Thirty is the new 25.  Even though I turned 30 this year I still see age has just a number.

43. Scheduling a photo shoot in Punta Cana was the biggest motivation to get me in my best condition ever.

44. Volunteering 2-hours a week at my churches youth group has been some of the most rewarding time invested this past year.  Look for younger kids, other than your sibling, whom you can be a role model for and invest into.

45. Scheduling “alone-time” at coffee shops with a book has been some of my most peaceful and reflective times of the year.

46. In terms of how to dress for bad weather:  There is no such thing as bad weather, only bad clothes.

47. Cycle your supplements.  3 weeks on and 1 week off.  Cycle your supplement brands daily too. I rotate around 2 different protein powders, 2 different multis, 2 different fish oil supplements and 2 different greens products.  It’s an insurance policy to make sure you’re never deficient (unless both brands are crappy).

48. Early morning training, with weights and cardio, still proved to be my favorite time to work out.  It sets the stage for the rest of your day and creates positive momentum to eat clean and be productive the rest of the day.

49. The ultimate pre workout shake: 1 banana, 1/2 cup of strawberries, 1-2 shots of espresso, chocolate protein powder, 1 cup of ice is the best tasting and most refreshing shake to boost your workout intensity.

50. When you know, you know. I knew I was going to marry Flavia after the first 2 weeks (maybe less).

51. If you’re a businessman, or up and coming entreprenuer, read all of Seth Godin’s books.

52. Spend as much time with your family as possible.  They will not be with you forever (I lost my 85-year old Nonno Vince and my 51-year old Uncle Lawerence this past year).

53. See the gym as an opportunity to inspire others and raise the intensity of other peoples workouts around you.  By bringing your best into the gym you’ll bring out the best of the people around you.

54. There are only three important things you need to figure out in life:  Maker, Mission, Mate.  First, you have to figure out who you Maker is and what he wants with you.  Then you have to figure out your Mission in life, that is your higher calling.  And finally you have to find your Mate to make you complete.

55. You are the average of the five people you associate with the most.  If you’re five closest friends are millionaires than I’m guessing you are on your way or are one too.  If you’re five closest friends have six-packs, same thing.  Show me your friends and I’ll show you your future.  Evaluate your top five on a regular basis.

56. Drinking wine on a Saturday night, creating a antipasto dish and watching a movie with Flavia is my favorite way to kick back and relax.

57. Buying a foam roller and actually using it helped me save money and visits on my A.R.T. therapist and my massage therapist.

58. Go on trips with your parents.  Invest into memories that will last a lifetime.  My most memorable trips this past year were with my parents in Orlando for a week.

59. Getting to meet YOU better via my blog, Facebook, Youtube and email has been a very fun time for me.  I love to hear what’s on your mind; hear about your fitness progress; know that you’re taking action; sharing what is working for you and fostering the growth of this website.

60. Lastly, it’s never too late.  It’s NEVER, EVER too late to start doing what you want to do.

I hope you enjoyed those.  Any of those stand out to you? I would love to hear one thing you learned in 2009.  Comment away!

Vince

  5. hey Vince, it’s Brad. I just read through your list. This is really great material. Maybe it’s because I haven’t read a ton of your posts, but I was struck by how many items on this list are universals and not just related to body building. Anyways, congrats on getting engaged, Merry Christmas, and God bless.

p.s. in case you’re interested: your dad is still my favourite camp speaker ever.

  6. #55 relates very much to me.

    55. You are the average of the five people you associate with the most. If you’re five closest friends are millionaires than I’m guessing you are on your way or are one too. If you’re five closest friends have six-packs, same thing. Show me your friends and I’ll show you your future. Evaluate your top five on a regular basis.

I realized my association of friends last year changed pretty significantly. I started hanging out more with people who are more ambitious and has a thirst for knowledge. And I realize that sometimes I just have to associate less with people who are slowing me down and more with people who will add value to me.

I will start hanging out with people who workout and have great physiques and mentality in 2010.

  10. Hi Vince and Merry Christmas early…
My favorite is #52. My family is going skiing in Colorado the day after Christmas. Can’t wait to see Granny’s 6-pack (six grandkids ages 5 1/2 to 9) ski for the first time. Although 14 family members in one condo for 7 days ought to be fun.
And on to #47…you don’t need to cycle supplements if you are taking the best, most absorbable and most soluable (85%) ones around. My Vitality Pack consists of Vitality Calcium Complete and Vitality Multi-Vitamin & Mineral which together provides the optimal daily level of 25 critical nutrients.
Anyway, love all the info you share. Keeps me thinking, keep it up.

Don’t ever make excuses not to spend time with your family. I am one of Vince’s cousins, and spending time with him and the rest of my family clan are the most fun times imaginable. I also lost my 89-year-old Grandpa this year. For the last couple weeks before he died, I kept saying to myself and my dad that I really wanted to go visit him (he was still living at home). I never did. I got a phone call at midnight one night from him saying he was having chest pains. The last time I saw him was that night as he was put on a stretcher and brought to the hospital. I did spend a lot of time with my Grandpa, but I still am kicking myself in the butt for constantly putting off that visit. There’s enough time in the day to do what’s important, so I guess this is what I have learned this year. Thanks Vince for your constant inspiration to me and our family! Love you!

  23. I love most of your points and actually it’s all very good that it’s quite hard to pick out the ones that stands out (for me)

After some thinking, I think these 2 are the bests:

    16. Searching for perfection is the quickest way to fail.

54.There are only three important things you need to figure out in life: Maker, Mission, Mate. First, you have to figure out who you Maker is and what he wants with you. 26. #8 and #9 were my favorite. I’ve come to understand that no matter how hard you may try looking for that perfect person, he or she (gender specific of course) will come into your life when God sees to it. In the mean time, you need to focus on becoming THAT person’s perfect partner.

#9 talks about not being able to change another person unless they are willing to change. That couldn’t be more clear and imminent. My mother told me that when i was dating and i tried to help change my ex-girlfriend to become a better person, but she didn’t really see it that way. It’s too bad, but it’s life: people will only change by themselves with God’s help. God may use you as a tool or instrument in the other person’s life to change to a better them, but YOU, by YOURSELF, can’t change another person. Divine intervention is required!

  28. Dude,

You blew me away with those 60 things.

    37. The grass is not greener on the other side. The grass is green where you water it. Think of that in terms of relationships.
    45. Scheduling “alone-time” at coffee shops with a book has been some of my most peaceful and reflective times of the year.
    46. In terms of how to dress for bad weather: There is no such thing as bad weather, only bad clothes.

Then you have to figure out your Mission in life, that is your higher calling. And finally you have to find your Mate to make you complete.

Vince, the most powerful gift you can give anyone is the gift of inspiration. For out of inspiration, all other great things have their seed.

Thank you for your inspiration bro.

  29. What I learned: Don’t be so easily seduced by ads and “opportunities” on the web that promise all sorts of extravagant new ideas for building wealth, losing fat, etc.. They’re just old ideas repackaged by busy little bees who are getting rich on others’ gullibility.

  31. Vince

You have seriously motivated me so much in so many ways. I used to be a helpless 16 year old, who just wanted to gain muscle, today i’m way past that and writing all of it down would probably flood this blog, so I’ll keep it short. Without you opening my eyes by reading your book, I probably would have been here. I’ve taken my organized weight lifting lifestyle and implied it all around me, everywhere I go, and I feel confident about the future!

    Thanks Vince!

  33. For me, #8 stuck out to me the most. Now that I have read that, I’m going to try it. Instead of trying to find the right person, I should start becoming the right person. One of the things I have learned this year is: Never give up on your goals or dreams. One of my goals is to get a six pack and get ripped. I have not stopped on that goal, and I will strive to reach it. Everyone has a goal or dream to achieve. Stay motivated, focused, energized, and don’t let anyone bring you down or tell you to change or be someone else. It’s you! Feel accomplished!
Thanks for all your advice and I hope to continue receiving advice from you about fitness and much more.

  34. Hey Vince,

Thank you for sharing your wisdom and insight, I greatly appreciate it. I agree with most of what you posted and I have grown and gained new revelation of quite a few things this year myself such as:

    1. People/professionals are not always as competent as their titles imply.
    2. Some friendships are not meant to last a lifetime they are only meant to last for a season/circumstance and when it’s become clear that the purpose for the friendship is over, let it be over and be OK with it.
    3. If you find yourself asking yourself why your friends w/someone, pls do yourself a favor and rethink that friendship.
    4. I don’t need to spend time w/people who add nothing to my life.
    5. Birds of a feather really do flock together and ur guilty by association 🙂
    6. I need professional friends, i.e., doctors, lawyers, business leaders, etc.
    7. I’m really not the terrible, useless person I believed I was.
    8. I am more than a conquerer.
    9. I really do have something of value to offer.
    10. I am full of purpose and destiny and it’s not fair for me to hide it because of someone else’s guilt, shame and disappointment.

And ur right: tens attract tens, people don’t want u to change, ur either progressing or regressing only statues remain the same, I am the right person for somebody. Thank you for a year full of encouragement and I can’t wait for what’s in store next year. Merry Christmas, Happy New Year and CONGRATS on your engagement!

  35. Hi Vince. As always, I am truly inspired by your honest and personal approach towards fitness, nutrition and life in general. I have already made a similar list for myself as well but I can definitely say that the most important thing I learned in 2009 is to never give up on myself. The next most important thing I learned is to appreciate my friends and family and let them know how much they mean to me…..love, loyalty and friendship are the key things that keep me going and give me the motivation to work as hard as I can to achieve my goals and fulfill my personal needs. Take care and have a safe and happy holiday season and best wishes to you for the coming new year.

Since joining and using your program i do feel leaner but still have some way to go to achieve my goal. Visible signs of my six pack are now noticeable after 6months of using your work outs but need to do more on the nutrition/diets to put on more muscle and weight.

What a nice subject you had mentioned and wrote about!

While I was reading, you really reminded me of many many mistakes and things I was doing just because I have to do,I liked the point when you mentioned that We should spend as much possible time with our family as we can. Therefore, I booked a ticket to visit my family in Jordan although I had work and decided that nothing is more important than spending memorable time with them. The other points are also amazing,so much inspiring,I will start act in a way which makes other people happy and I will be reminded always of the sentence you said:give always before you take.GREAT Subject!!!

  45. I love # 54…Maker Mission Mate…without knowing your purpose in life it’s easy to get discouraged. I haven’t found my purpose yet, but that is my goal for 2010. One thing I learned this year was :
“People may not always remember what you said, or what you did, but they will always remember how you made them feel.”
I thought people would want to be around me if I had a certain look. While this may work for a short time, people want to be around others that make them feel good. Try to make everyone you come in contact with feel better about themselves.

Oh and I also liked that you can’t remember Taylor Lautner’s name….it might actually be kinda weird if you did…..

  48. Reading this post makes you realize Vince DelMonte is an insightful person. His Top 60 Reflection is amazing, I’ve learned a lot. I wish I can hire Vince as my personal trainer and help me become the person i want to be- ripped and healthy.

I agree when Vince said ‘learning” has three different levels. That’s true. learning is a process. You Learn things in every information you read and in every experience you go through. Either it’s a good or bad learning, it’s totally up to you how to use this learning to become a “Better” you.

Yet, I seem to disagree when Vince wrote Twitter is annoying, lol. I love Twitter. I am addicted to tennis and reading tennis tweets becomes my everyday routine. I use Twitter more often than Facebook but I use tools for optimization.

Now, I am picking the best 5 in the list:

    1) “Stop focusing on finding and looking for the right person and start focusing on becoming the right person.” -Ten stars out of 10 for this! This is 100% true.

    2) “It’s better to be your own man than let anyone label you or your life. Don’t get caught up in the hype of being an Alpha Male or any other random benchmark for manhood and manliness. All you need to be is a Man.” -New insight for me. This speaks a lot, it’s awesome!

    3) “You can’t help people who don’t want to help themselves.” -People who don’t want to help themselves are usually hard in themselves.

    4) “If you have a hobby or passion or obsession that keeps you up at night then right now is the time to cash in on that passion. Use the power of the Internet to turn your real passion into a real business.” -I am a person with a number of things I can’t live without, such as watching Mark Burnett’s SURVIVOR and be updated with TENNIS. I wish I can turn my WordPress blog into something where i can earn money.

    5) ” It’s NEVER, EVER too late to start doing what you want to do.” -This is true. Although skinny at 25, there’s still hope for me to get ripped before 2012. hehe.

Then you have to figure out your Mission in life, that is your higher calling. And finally you have to find your Mate to make you complete.*

I completely agree with the first two points here. However, I completely disagree with the third point. I’m a complete person whether I’m with someone, or not. It’s my flaws, faults, strengths, weaknesses that make me a complete person.

That aside, you’ve had a damned impressive, intense fun-filled, last 12 months!! May the learning never stop.

If I were you I would sit here parents (and her) down and ask them everything about how they could pull such a thing off. 51. 29. Keep asking yourself, “Why do I want what I want?” Remind yourself of the reasons why you are chasing certain goals.

I like 29 a lot. This year, that very same question has been my most important question to myself. I had a strong feeling when this year started that I would make the biggest change that I ever had before in my life. In the beginning of 2009 I was overweight, constantly stressed and I had high bloodpressure which made me feel so sick. I´m a short guy, 163 cm and I weighed 79 kilo´s. I stopped eating as much fast food as I did and now I´m down to 65 kilo´s. I still go to MacDonalds but only once in a week. And recently, I started to go to the gym at my work. What I learned is that change is possible, even if you have all the odds against you, you just need to have strong enough reasons. My reasons were that, I only have one health, and if it´s gone it´s gone forever. Other reason were that I wanted to find my soulmate to share my life with, someone who takes care of herself, someone who is healthy, so I had to become healthy first before I could find her.

Just recently I learned the most important life lesson I´ve ever learned and I would like to share it with everybody here. I think it was Anthony Robbins who said something like this:

“There are no failures. There are only outcomes. Even if you did not get your desired result, you can learn from it, and next time produce the result that you want.”

Right now I have the goal of getting free from my everyday job and starting my own online business. When I told about my goal to my co-workers they just started to laugh at me and mock me, reminding me of my past failures, trying to bring me down to their level. At first I was upset because they could not simply wish me good luck but, when I heard Anthony Robbins talk about this in his program “Unlimited Power”, it clicked for me, and now I have this tunnel vision approach where I see this light in the end of the tunnel – my goal, and the walls of the tunnel are protecting me from outside harm, like for example, when people attack me verbally. I only see my goal and use their mocking as fuel to get my desired goal.

    Thank you Vince!
Next summer I will have my dream body thanks to you 🙂
    Kristian from Stockholm, Sweden

P.S. I saw a couple of videos with you and your fiance, Flavia. I bet that when you first saw her your question was: “How can someone be that beautiful?”
I would have been pretty nervous in your situation 😉

  58. Hey Vince. I enjoyed your list and I think that #21 is the best one but I would take that even further and apply it to most if not all the people in your life. As long as you learn from the past there is no need to bring it up unless, like you say, it will help the relationship. It is also easier to move on in a relationship if you can put the mistakes you and others make and just leave the past in the past.

Merry Christmas and happy new year. hope you have as much and more success in the coming year.

Great list! I started listing all my favs but it got too long so I will just go with “I love most of them”.

I learned so much in 2010 but here’s a few that come to mind.

I learned who my real friends are.

I learned I am much stronger mentally than I ever thought I was.

I learned that my 40’s keep getting better and better. (I am 42)

I learned that I found my passion in helping others get fit. This is my calling – that I know for sure.

I learned that anyone who says you can’t get into great shape after 40, hasn’t REALLY tried.

I learned to stop judging people. You never know what their journey is like.

I learned that once I started writing down my goals, I started realizing them.

I am LEARNING (this is my work in progress) to stop worrying about what people think of me.

    Happy Holidays!
    susan

  66. Thanks so much for the list Vince, You really walk your talk. I’m proud to have ordered your No-Nonsense program this month. Will send you my before and afters…

You could add one more thing to your list that is sort of self evident or maybe you covered it…and that is…

“Share your wisdom! pass it on! Mentor others!” The things you have learned you clearly have experienced yourself and are passing it on!

  67. Vince,

I just took a look at your last years “learning” experiences and it seems you have grown a lot. I copied and pasted this into note pad, there is some super valuable information in there I just got to “implement” it. Thats the most important lesson i learned in 09, speed of implementation and just doing it. I took a leap of faith and went to Orlando and met all you guys and let me tell you it motivated me to the point where im firing on all cylinders and already have a product.

Keep it up man, congrats on the engagement, im sure well talk soon

  69. I think the most profound statement you made in this entire group is #23. Another way of saying what I was brought up to believe is “To thine own self be true”. The life of significance versus success goes in the same line as does your last one about “never too late”. I was nearly dead at 31 and my life was over. At 57 I am getting not a 2nd chance, but probably a 3rd chance. That doesn’t mean that we always get a 2nd or 3rd chance so I don’t suggest sitting in front of the big screen waiting for your ship to come in. From 31 to 44 that is pretty much what I did (except no big screen – just work 24/7/365). Ever seen a tombstone that said “I should have spent more time at work” ?? Didn’t think so. And, Vince, it may be that 30 is the new 25, but 55 is the new 30. I do not bow out gracefully to the young turks anymore. If Jack LaLane can do 95 pushups at 95 years of age, then I have room to grow. Thank you for a summer and fall of great tips, advice and some respect for our intelligence.

  73. “Searching for perfection is the quickest way to fail” that is something I found t be very true this past year, searching for someone that is perfect, or trying to make yourself perfect is a waste of time. Being human means we are designed to fail at one point, but we can all ways strive to be perfect like are Father in Heaven 🙂

  82. Hey Vince, what an incredible year of revelation you have had! It is inspiring and admirable what you have done.
16- Trying to achieve perfection will lead to failure has been a tough one for me. But I have realized that it’s just not possible….as much as you try. It just leads to never being satisfied or happy with results that in most people’s opinions are incredible. I have got to work on it.
21- I love that you and Flavia have the rule to never talk about the past….unless of course it brings you closer. I wish more people thought that way. It is so useless to bring up what doesn’t currently even matter and more importantly isn’t going to help you now or in the future. Just keep your eyes on the prize….never looking back.
52- Nothing is better than spending time with family. It’s too bad that sometimes this doesn’t occur to you until much further in life. But regardless of when it does, just start making more opportunities to do so….cuz in the end, your family is who is always going to be there for you!
55- My mom has always told me, “You are who you run with”. And she couldn’t be more right. You become like who you are with. So you may as well pick the ones that are uplifting and encouraging and get rid of the others.

Merry Christmas and congratulations on a wonderful year and an even more exciting one in 2010.

  83. I think that many of these things are useful for people to realize, especially in a world such as ours. I personally think that love is the most important thing–as it becomes the fundamental platform for peace, comfort, self-worth & esteem, compassion, selflessness, etc.—which are all ingredients for a wonderful life. Love also helps put things into perspective and show people what really matters in life.

I agree that those with a “10” personality will most likely find their mate with a “10” personality. However, the scale 1 through 10 is subjective and objective to people’s personal opinions. So the whole 5’s tend to find 5’s, is more of a matter of opinion from someone who considers themselves a particular number. Smart people will tend to appreciate life and remain challenged more if their mates are smart. People that think they are good looking WILL tend to find someone that agrees with them. Whether or not they look good or are actually smart is merely a matter of opinion, context, etc.

The reason I mention this is because these ratings are really a norm in society based on false pretenses of what looks good.
As long as people recognize their own beauty and can see others for their beauty–self esteem in society goes up and people live happy lives. When people say, “You need to look like this, or do this..” to be a “10”, I shake my head and hope people can see life through their own eyes, and not through the eyes of the media, nor the eyes of “models”…

    LIFE, LOVE, and HAPPINESS!!!
    -Peace

Once again you’ve inspired me my brother!

I’ve been following you since you first released your No Nonsense Muscle Building book in 2006.

It was great to actually meet you this October at the Fitness Info Summit and to win your DVD set. I really enjoyed being around so many positive and like-minded people.

Your success has been such an influence on me because I have desired to do something similar and I guarantee you will see a total transformation from me by summer of 2010. I’ve decided to document the whole transformation on my blog and live the life I was born to live.

Until we meet again… keep rockin’ it and congratulations to you and Flavia!

    61) When typing a list of “things I have learned” make sure to use spell check
    62) The number 30 comes after 29 (not 20)
    63) If you make a list of 70 things you have learned then you should label it 70 things I have learned and not 60.

Sorry man, I had to give you a hard time, especially about your spelling.

  87. Great post Vince…You are wise beyond your years. The biggest thing I have learned this year is that even at 55 years old, you can still change your lifestyle and physique to become more of the physical person you have always wanted to be. More importantly is that becoming more fit increases your mental capacity, confidence and relationships with others mostly through an improved attitude on life.

I want to thank you, Joel, Isabel, Craig and all the others who have contributed to my renewed outlook and physical being. I look forward to 2010 and the progress I will achieve in my personal goals.

I would have to say “be yourself, everyone else is taken” is in my top three though. The new generation of teens seem to also be trying to become someone else just so they can “fit in”. What ever happened to everyone being unique?

  93. Hey Vince,

First of all: Wow!! Your top 60 list was really an eyeopener.

I know a lot of the things myself, and I continue to have an open mind towards learning new things, but so many wise things collected in one place in writing is really unusual.. I’m seriously considering to start doing a simila thing myself 🙂 Is there any way I could get to see your older lists? If they’re not private..

One thing I’ve learned this year is that the only one who can help you is yourself (almost like your #22) and to help yourself you have to take action. In my case this year my action was to ask others for help, a lot of things have happened to me in the past year and a couple of months ago I realised that if I wanted to get back up on the horse I had to go to others – so I did.. And now I finally feel like I have some control over my life again, I’ve started on Joel Marions CYWT program and I hope I can soon begin on your No Nonsense program, besides that I will probably start my own fitness and nutrition counselling company before I turn 19 in may next year..

    See you around

  96. hey vince
great and inspiring post as usual
maybe a lil bit better 😉
i´m actually a quiet spectator of what you´re doing which means i´m not really taking a part in posting comments or sending before and after pixs. And I have to admit I didn´t buy anyof your stuff. That´s no offence I guess there are thousands of people who can tell me your stuff works and I believe them. But till now my knowledge and my dedication to getting, stronger, bigger and faster in cooperation with some of your advice ( I say some because I think nobody can use every advice you give, you just can´t put them all together) have kept me away from hitting a plateau.
But injuries have. Since 3 years there was always one big injuriy a year for me. This year is truely worst case. I couldn´t work out constantly since july. I lost abou 8 kg muscles and I´m afraid to look in the mirror havin´no shirt on.Plus I started to study sport at Europe´s only Sport University in cologne. I tried to work trough the pai but I couldn´t. In the begin of November I had to stop all pratical courses. No working out at the gym, no running, no swimming…nuthn´.
I´m out till mid of January maybe February. I was so frustrated being at the SPorts University and eerything I can do is sitting around.
First time in my life I really thought about quitting. Just givin up. Heared my parents and school teachers´voices in my head: ” YOu shouldn´t study sport. Go for some kind of engineering. That´s easy for you and you are going to have a job even before study is finished.
Did I mention that my girlfriend broke up these days? By the way 2 days before my 21st birthday…
So nothing went well these days.
But i cut off all the bad thoughts and I decided to go on. I came back after every injury in the past I WILL COME BACK this time. Not just come back, i WILL be STRONGER and BETTER in every aspect.
This is my advice to all your readers: Quiting is NO OPTION! Whatever is your problem, there is a solution. Go on.
If that story doesn´t fit here I guess you got the power to delete comments so feel free 😀
I just think your blogs and vids are a big motivation. Honestly I hope to become a personal trainer as well. I don´t think of being just a coach in the gym showing someone how to lift weights correctly. I want to HELP people. Maybe I´m not going to have a fanbse like yours but if i can lead just 1 person to get out of his couch, working out and start to eat the right things so he has a better life. That´s more than none. Cuz everyone has a dream and IS capable of fulfilling it but most people don´t believe in themselves. That´s another reason which inspires me so much: I want to lead by example. That´s why I always give 100% in the gym. Maybe the others don´t like me cuz I´m not going to the leg curl maschine and talk with a girl for 20minutes instead of working out.. But 16 year old boys come up and say:”Damn man how long have you been working out. Great body.”
Being ask for advice is a great motivation to get even more better.

So please take this long long comment as a big THANK YOU
The first blog I frea from you was exactly 1 year ago. 15th Dec 2008 you were at the LAX Airport. Great post 😉
THere are a lot of people who think working out is just to show off. But that´s wrong. It´s more! And you always remind me that I´m on the right way.
NOw just a quick feedback to the actual post:
    No. 2 Doing it since I´m 17 😉
    No. 21 Period!
No. 22 Did that before I started studying in cologne: makes life much more easier
    No. 23 Amen
    25 “a” that´s the way I try to live
25 “b” Did you work out between Sun 6p.m. and Mon 6 p.m.?
No. 44 I´m doing this in a poor neighbourhood in my city. It´s great to inspire lil kids. There is no better gift than seeing a kid smiling.

    So I´m out
All the best to you. You´re living a lil boys dream and I love the fact that so appreciate it and don´t take all the good things for granted.
Like the bit+++ in this MTV show my sweet sixteen. come on that bulllsh!+

    1. Alcohol is evil. I will never drink again.
    2. Ciggarets, are verry addictive, very hard to quit(maby next year…).
    3. Incorporating training and proper nutrition in your life, changes everything for better.
    4. The leaner you are, the more attractive you become.
    5. And last but not least, The more you achive with your body, the more addictive it becomes…

  99. Vince – what an inspiration. You must keep so many personal notes in order to remember all this stuff. And I didn’t see one thing that I didn’t agree with. It is very true that committing to improving yourself fitness wise leads to filling out so many other holes in your life. It teaches you the mindset to become what you really want to be, and this is very evident in you. You didn’t have a major transformation until AFTER college (early 20s?) which shows that you really can take this step at any point in your life.

You are a role model whose intentions are truly good. I wish you were one of my top 5; my friends could learn a lot from you.

  102. Hey Vince!

    really inspiring list!

I agree that we need more people like Taylor Lautner. I found out he is only 1 month older then I, but has so much more muscle.. I now have a age-related role model, body wise! =D

Really packing muscle these days =)

  103. hey vince…..

i almost liked majority of dem particularly couple of statements which stands out wud be:

“My loved ones benefit from the investment into my body more than I benefit. When you don’t take care of yourself, not only do you suffer but the people around you suffer too. Not taking care of your body is very selfish. ” i firmly believe on dis, as i have lost 48 kgs. in nine months n seen d difference in life of not only mine but people associated with me…

secondly, “There is no such thing as coasting in life. You are either dying or your’re growing. There is a myth that you can stay the same and it’s not true.” cuz in my opinion change is d only thing which is constant and we keep changin….either dyin or growin…well said…

    i love ur videos, n ideas…

grt 2 b in touch wid u…after robin sharma ur my inspiration !!!

    hav fun

  104. To your wife your “I do” means “Do you?” Marriage is not a contract. It’s an investment. Through all stages of marriage (newly wed, kids, empty nest) NEVER stop dating her. Keith

  105. Thanks vince again a lot to learn from… my learnings
1- wt i give is wt i get. In all aspects relationships or business.
2- the only person i can depend on is myself to get any work done.
3- learning implemented is learning learnt. The gap b/w learning and implementation wt decides the result of the learning.

thanks again n hope u have a fantastic year ahead.
    ALL THE BEST.

  106. One thing I learned this year is that if you do not change the inner you the outter you will not change.

  107. I really liked #8 Vince. I also really liked #50. When I read that I said, “wow.” I’m really happy for you! Glad you found your special somebody!
One thing I learned this year, Don’t let people into your heart so easily. Keep it open for people to come in, but be careful and make sure you understand who it is your letting in.
    Again congrats Vince!

  108. Outstanding list, Vince. So many great points.

Two, in particular, stood out to me.

#23 – Be yourself because everyone else is taken.
#52 – Spend as much time with your family as possible.

It is pointless to live life trying to be someone other than who you are. Family is the most important thing…cherish them while you have them.

One thing I learned this year…

No matter how many nay sayers there are, you can accomplish anything you set your mind to. Creating and posting (where you see it often) a motivation board will keep you focused and remind you of what you really desire.

  109. On #58, vince said his best trip this year was with his parents in Orlando. I am Vince’s dad, and yes, it was a great trip and great time with the Summit fitness info conference. If you ever hear there’s another one of these events that Bedros and Vince and his mastermind colleagues put on, get your butt down there.
it’s well worth every dollar spent to learn from these passionate, intelligent men and women.

    Luch (Vincenzo’s dad) 🙂
