Truth About Bodybuilding Supplements Part 2

By Vince Del Monte, WBFF Pro Fitness Model, Certified Fitness Trainer and Nutritionist and author of No Nonsense Muscle Building.

If you think my last video on the supplement mafia was disturbing, wait until you watch this one…

…you’re going to laugh, scream and then show all your
friends after you watch this.

Click here to subscribe to my YouTube channel for more great supplement and nutrition tips!

You’ll also notice a few dozen very emotional and thought provoking responses to last weeks video on Christian Boeving saying, “…you should be smarter than that…” when it comes to choosing bogus bodybuilding supplements.

I got a lot of feedback defending the “good guys” in the supplement industry and I would like to believe there are some really high quality products out there but when I see a video like this, I really lose all my trust and hope.

After watching that video, I have 3 questions for you…

1. How do you feel about supplement companies being able to make products for $1-2 and than selling them to you for $60?

2. What do you think of the supplement industry being unregulated and not needing FDA approval?

3. Why do you justify buying supplements when you know that supplement companies can easily put out low quality products?

It’s no wonder the supplement industry is a 24 BILLION dollar industry – anybody can make them and we keep buying them because we’re pathetically desperate!

Hey, I’m guilty too – I won’t lie. I’ve been in the supplement store, just like you, and have given in to my lust for instant gratification thinking, “Maybe this will help me muscle up quicker..”

Here’s some more of my own thoughts with supplements…

1. Even IF certain supplements are high in quality, I never expect them to work miracles.

2. I’ll ask myself, “What am I trying to get this supplement to do that my training, diet and lifestyle can not?”

3. I’ve lost 90% of my trust in the supplement industry.

4. I’m so skeptical that even when a new product comes out and it’s from someone I trust, I’m not even interested in “looking into it” because I’ve wasted enough time and money in the past only to be disappointed.

5. I know that my body is not getting what it says on the actual bottle and I can’t believe what the store owner says because (for the most part) they just want to sell you the product they have the biggest margins on (i.e. biggest profit).

6. I’ve never seen a friend muscle up on supplements or hear someone say, “I got big because of this supplement…” Have you? Seriously, all the guys I know who are really muscular and strong have at least one of the following commonalities…

- they either have amazing genetics.
- they have used anabolic steroids.
- they have a true love for good old fashioned training.
- they live and breath a healthy bodybuilding lifestyle.
- they have been consistent and committed to their goals since they started.

7. Lastly, you just don’t know what you’re putting in your body. You don’t – no matter what it says on the bottle -how in the world do you really know if it’s good or bad?

Do you think any company is going to admit the truth about their absorption rates and manufacturing process? Why gamble your health and money on supplements if you’re not confident in the return you’re getting for your investment?

Instead, I would encourage you to put your efforts into the 90% that DOES work.

1. A structured and progressive training program.
2. A healthy and balanced eating plan.
3. A lifestyle that provides 8 hours of sleep each night.

If you’re sick and tired of the pills and powders that promise
the physique of your dreams but deliver nothing but
gastrointestinal stress then get started with my muscle
building program

  2. Hi Vinny,

    To those three questions:

    1. How do you feel about supplement companies being able to make products for $1-2 and than selling them to you for $60?

The same with other manufacturers selling products for the same profit margin.

    2. What do you think of the supplement industry being unregulated and not needing FDA approval?

They can’t even regulate what they are supposed to now – dairy, corn (GMO), wheat (GMO), drugs (big pharma has big money), not much personnel to do so and the fines are nothing to stop them.

And why can’t alternatives be legalized, even in the medical arena when the AMA will even go against MDs that come up with natural cures?

    3. Why do you justify buying supplements when you know that supplement companies can easily put out low quality products?

Just ego! Maybe the placebo effect?

…..by the way, I wrote this “little” comment in my language, not because I can´t do it in yours, but in some kind of symbolic protest…..

    …. thanks a lot…..

  8. You really want the FDA overseeing the supplement industry? They can’t regulate the drug industry and are known to keep harmful drugs on the market even when they know they are harmful. Supplement companies are regulated under GMPs (Good Manufacturing Processes). GMPs are also enforced by the FDA under section 501(B) of the 1938 Food, Drug and Cosmetic Act.

See here for more information. http://www.fda.gov/NewsEvents/Newsroom/PressAnnouncements/2007/ucm108938.htm

Stick to well known, reputable supplement companies.

  12. Hi, it´s amazing how anybody can create and sell a bunch of crap telling us (customers) that is the real next big thing of loose weight or muscle supplements,
It really hurts and is very dissapointing how they lie to us, I´m near the borther with BVille Texas, i live in Matamoros Mexico, and normally I wait for the first 7 days of the month to go and buy supplements on a well known nutrtion store. I´ve already tried some of the TOP dogs on supplements and never seen any results, now i just went to the gym with discipline and started to loose the extra weight that I HAD. Know, I just started with some exercises to rip my body, i know it will take some months to, but now that I started to listen and read to your articles, I think it will be easier and better (with HARD WORK and discipline) to get the results that I´ve ever want. I really really appreciate your tips, videos, investigations about the Truth of supplements and exercises, it´s been helpful for me, and I hope in the near future to buy your programs.
    sincerely

  13. 1. i see it as its not fair that they can sell it for 60 bucks when they make it for 2, its taking advantage however, it is a wonderful business opertunity looking from their point of view… i mean if you (general you) could do it, i bet a lot of people would!

    2. they should definatly have to pass atleast some kind of test, its basically like you buying a new car but that car has never undergone any kind of crash test or its brakes were develouped on the computer and never tested… i would feel very uneasy everytime i drove that car!

    3. We justify it because we normally could believe it should work why not? i mean we live in a society that has gotten used to this kind of thing imean look. we have microwaves, faster cars, airplanes, we can do almost anything looking from a surgery point of view for example a friggen heart transplate but replacing a human one with a pigs heart. if we can do these things and we are taking many of these things for granted why should our technology not be able to make working supplements? thats the mindset that a person unedgucated on this subject would most probably take.

There’s a saying, “Buyer beware!”. It’s up to us, the consumer, to do our homework before we buy these supplements. Most of all, realize that there’s no “magic bullet”. It takes work on our parts to make the change we want in our bodies and health.

I took for six months but I dont see any changes of my butt. Can you please help me with my small butt? I really want to make it bigger….Thanks and more power to you.

From what i understand as long as a supplement is “cGMP” by our government, your getting a quality product, unlike most small companies in the bodybuilding world where you could be getting saw dust for all you know.Everyone do your homework, this is the 10% of the industry that is trying to good,by 2010 the government will take control of the supp industury and everything will HAVE To be cGMP !!!! That was a great video! I like doing things all natural with foods, especially organic foods. It’s great that you share this information with your customers. So many people are mislead with the supplement industry. People need to eat like their great, great grandparents use to eat & quit taking the lazy way out to get the body of their dreams.
Like your father. Has said “inch by inch life is a cinch, yard by yard life is hard”.

  30. HI Vince, I just had surgery and have not been able to lift for about three months.

This time off from lifting has been very disappointing and has caused some muscle loss. But the real reason I am telling you this is that when I had my blood work done before the surgery the doctor asked me what the hell I have been into.

I told him that at one point I was taking Glutamine, creatine, Bcaa, To much protein isolate, L-carnitine which absolutely screwed up my body chemistry. Basically I learned the hard way. These supplements did nothing for my health nor did it build this mystery muscle we all hope to gain from the shit they put in supplements. The moral of the story is that the right diet and good old fashioned hard training is all you really need.

Nobody said it was easy to get the body of your dreams. It is a lot of hard work and dedication but the pay off is well worth it. Once you get over that hurdle of the first few months it becomes second nature. AS a matter of fact I am better shape without those miracle drugs, have more money and feel much better. Well That’s enough rambling for.

    Stay healthy everyone, Kevin Taylor

  31. Hi Vince,
Just saw the video, and man that was crazy watching someone just making their own supplements at home like that. I can now recall a time when I bought something like that, and when I opened up the package and took out the bottle, I noticed the label was all crooked…. not realizing a person manually put it on instead of a machine at an inspected factory. I don’t use supplements anymore and haven’t since “93″, when the supplement industry was just begining to boom.

Hi Vinny, this was more than a wake-up call for everyone who was or still feeding their bodies with DRUGSSSSSSS. As it shows on this video about muscle building supplements and don’t forget losing weight supplments. You just get intoxicated and have temporary results, NO NEED. By following your program to rely and trust on real food (natural supplements) for losing the belly or fat and build up lean muscle.

  34. Most supplements are over hyped crap for sure. There are however some companies you can trust.

    myprotein.co.uk/

    maximuscle.com/

Maximuscle products do work, I know from experience. It must be hard for you in America as your food is so bad, it really is. I went there and couldn’t believe how cheap everything was, quality and price.

I would like to know your experience of Maximuscle Vince? It is very expensive, but I have found U.K sites which sell it alot cheaper. And yes of course, supplements are not necessary, but I know that buying Maximuscle products is cheaper than buying the individual ingredients.

I believe Maximuscle Cyclone is the BEST bodybuilding supplement on the market.

  35. So basically you are being charged way too much money to destroy your body and get zero results. The guys that make supplements must be some kind of geniuses. Good thing I didn’t waste too much money on supplements.

I know that in my country, companies import supplements with cheap prices and sell them out with much higher prices. Most of them are not good as they’re advertised. I’m not interested in them. I think regular practising and good foods are the best.

  38. Hey Vince! Great post and, after having spent hundreds of dollars on personal coaching, protein powders and arginine pills, I’m realizing that what you’re saying is proably completely true. What would also be great is to hear from you what supplements you believe are reliable. I use creatine and meal replacement shakes in addition to being on a high protein/high calorie meal plan. Are there any companies out there that you think it is safe to buy products from?

    • Davor,

That’s what I’m trying to get you away from – there is no “one product” that is way better than all the others. If there is, you have to justify the extra cost. I would go with the stuff at http://www.vincedelmontenutrition.com I’ve been behind the scenes of their company and they produce a safe and quality product you can try.

  39. There’s a whole level of deception beyond whether a supplement works or not.

I was basically in tears when I found out, but even the “clean” diet is pretty bad for you. After changing my diet by doing nothing but taking out whey protein powders and cottage cheese, my cholesterol went 197 down to 126. LDL went from 114 to 56. This all happened in 30 freaking days.

The get huge bodybuilding diet is making people more susceptible to all sorts of sickness is my guess and I doubt that most of the people promoting it think it’s anything but a fountain of youth.
The truth is, animal protein most likely in any form isn’t so great for your health and raises risk factors. Of course, gaining mass when you’re limited to avocados, nuts and spirulina for protein intake isn’t so fun or easy either. Read The China Study by T Colin Campbell. If you like “conspiracy stuff” you’ll have fun with the 2nd half of the book.

  40. Yes, there are some good regimens out there and I have visited an all natural supplement company solely owned and operated http://www.herbacoy.com/ although the owner sold it so I do not know how they process things now. I was showed where he stores his raw materials (all fresh in a 40 degree dry storage area) then runs it into his machines to from mixing to labeling. A very clean place as well. He took his job seriously and was a 20+ year experienced Natruropath, so he knew what he was talking about. He also took all of his products BEFORE putting them on the market. Some were developed solely for the purpose to help someones health issues, so he sold them AFTER he saw them actually work. The thing is, it is really hard to do it “right” but few do so the rest of the “bad apples” blow it for the few who actually do it right.

In all seriousness, Vince is right here, diet and exercise correctly THEN seek out a good doctor for a full physical and blood work. Talk to the doctor about your results and if you have high cholesterol DO NOT TAKE ANY CHOLESTEROL LOWERING DRUGS they are dangerous, seek out a Natruropath first! They will (hopefully) select high-grade supplements for your particular body and situation. A good Natruropath will have a direct link to good supplements and some make them for you.

There is no free lunch as they say….do your homework and realize everyone is out to make a quick busk and suppliments are one of them.

Stay healthy and train hard! :-)

  41. There are legitimate, decent companies that provide what they advertise on the label. Many follow Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP).BR/BR/Assuming you’re getting the amount you’re paying for and nothing else in the product, the question is, “Is what you’re paying for safe, useful, and effective?”BR/BR/In many cases the answer is no.BR/BR/However, in other cases it is definitely Iyes./IBR/BR/Concentrated EPA/DHA fish oil? Undoubtedly healthy, by research. Grape seed extract? Ditto. Vitamin D? Absolutely, especially in Canada where many people get low sunlight and almost every one does over the winter. Garlic? Without a shadow of a doubt this is a healthy supplement for almost everyone. Probiotics? A good probiotic supplement is extremely important for people, especially after surgery, so much so that more and more doctors are recommending them, especially after being prescribed an anti-fungal/anti-biotic agent.BR/BR/This is the recommended treatment regime by many country’s medical associations, and that number is growing. It’s been shown to help reduce post-operative infections.BR/BR/So if you take a a completely negative view of the supplement industry based on the fact many bodybuilders have bought crap in a bottle, which makes ridiculous claims, in the goal of getting “big”… then that reveals your ignorance, Vince.BR/BR/Awareness about supplements? Yes, and awareness includes being able to read medical evidence and knowing which are actually helpful.

  43. Hey Vince,BR/BR/if you take this video material from the documentary “Bigger Stronger Faster”, you might as well promote the documentary a bit more. BR/I watched a screening in Munich, and talked to the guy that made this great film reality, and I really think HE DESERVES TO GET AS MUCH SUPPORT AS POSSIBLE.BR/BR/So people, if you like the clips on this website, go to http://www.biggerstrongerfastermovie.com/ buy the DVD, and support the people who’re behind it, so they have the money to follow it up with a second documentary…BR/BR/Take care!BR/BR/Hanjo

  44. This isn’t going to make me very popular, but if someone’s willing to spend $60 on bogus crap, so be it. Supply and demand, baby. The only part of this that truly worries me is that potentially hazardous materials can get on the market. But if someone doesn’t read labels and buys a hodgepodge of pixie dust, that’s his or her fault. It’s called personal responsibility. BR/BR/I choose not to use any supplements besides a generic protein powder to supplement my meals. I instead keep an eye on what I put into my body, what I expel through exercise, and how my body feels throughout the day. BR/BR/I know exactly what’s in a sweet potato, a bag of frozen shrimp, oatmeal, etc. I’ll stick with that and sweating my tush off instead of relying on a stack of red containers to get me where I want to be.

  47. Hey there, Vince. Another great post.BR/BR/It’s true – anyone here can go cut some grass clippings, dry them, put them in capsules, make a fancy label and, as long as you stay relatively small and do not get any complaints from customers, could make a lot of money on your “little herbal supplement”. BR/BR/Scary, but true. BR/BR/And the FDA won’t come get you any time soon – they are grossly understaffed and busy regulating foreign pharmaceuticals and toys with lead paint at the moment.BR/BR/I’ve been in the medical supplement industry for a while and unfortunately know more than I’d like to about how dishonest companies can be. BR/BR/While the vast majority of the supplement industry is untrustworthy, there are a few good companies out there, but not in the muscle building arena. The majority of good companies are only available to doctors, but even then, not all of them are reliable. Most of protein powder bought in a supplement store is complete crap, regardless of what companies tell you.BR/BR/When analyzing a company, I use what I call the PQRSX2 method. It stands for Purity, Potency, Quality, Quantity, Reliability, Research, Science and Safety.BR/BR/I won’t go into details about each of those, but suffice it to say very few companies fit the bill. BR/BR/Very few. Buyer beware. BR/BR/There ARE good companies out there making good quality products. But they are few and far between. BR/BR/Be well,BR/Dr. Bryan WalshBR/www.fatisnotyourfault.com

  48. Hi Vinny, great to see this article, just like the supplement industry there seems to be no regulation on what can be put in them and our foods,I myself have been taking natural products for years and could talk all day about my main subject, chemicals and toxins in our foods and water and beauty care products, as you metioned aspartame before, this is lethal, fella bodybuilder I know went like a matchstick with reaction to that stuff, I egt all my products now throught the mlm industry as they are setting the standards when it comes to health, I feel much better on a protein drink made that was made with input by one of the top four nutritionists in the world Dr Jeffery Bland. I dont break out in spots on my back anymore since switching to a natural belnd which I saw you recommend highly. I myself expose a lot of things in our foods like msg, the nicotene of food but cleverly disguised under different names and makes people obese, expose Vinny, we are all training to healthy, at least I am Keep up the good work and the tipsBR/Patrick Judge Dublin http://www.areyoualwaystired.com
