Bodybuilding Supplements And Why You Can’t Trust Them

By Vince Del Monte, WBFF Pro Fitness Model, Certified Fitness Trainer and Nutritionist and author of No Nonsense Muscle Building.

Over the next few days I’m going to send you some very disturbing video content that, I am confident, will make your blood boil.

I feel it’s necessary to wake you up to the ugly reality of the supplement industry and encourage you with the words my father shares with me, “If you don’t stand for something, you’ll fall for everything.”

If you think or already know the supplement industry is scamming you – wait until you watch this 60 second video – you haven’t seen or heard anything yet…

Click here to subscribe to my YouTube channel for more supplements tips!

State where your stand on the comments below.

I’ll go first.

1. How did Christian’s comments make YOU feel? christianboevingtraining

Interestingly, it seemed like this was the first time Christian was ever asked this question as his moral compass started spinning. I do respect him for being honest and not beating around the bush.

My main issue is that a guy like Christian (he’s just one example) may be inspiring thousands of young guys to look like him, but he is also misleading thousands by assuming everyone is trusting and unassuming. He cleverly puts his moral compass back in line by saying

“…you should be smarter than that.”

And he’s absolutely right, you and I should be smarter and not obsessed with instant gratification and supplements that promise to work like fairy dust.

Unfortunately, most guys have to learn the hard way and have to flush a few hundred dollars (or a few thousand dollars) down the drain to see these pills and powders do not work like they promise but it’s too late – the sale has been made and the supplement company has got your money and laughing all the way to the bank and off to create their next “propriety blend” they’ll convince you to buy next month.

You actually think the models and bodybuilders in magazines got muscular and ripped off NO2 and glutamine (just to name two)? They tell you that hard training and certain supplements were the solution, but it’s really anabolic steroids.

2. What are YOU going to do about it?

bodybuilding-scam1
I’ll tell you what I’m doing first.

I’ve been preaching against the supplement scams the past 6 years ever since I learned about the supplement mafia but I think we easily forget because we are obsessed with a society that glorifies instant gratification and the desperate thought that,

“Maybe this one will work…”

I made my stand in 2002 – it’s quite simple.

I vote with my dollar by not spending money on any bogus supplements and will not experiment with anything until I see it stand the test of time and be on the market for at least 3 years (IMO, that’s the best test).

I only introduce a few bodybuilding supplements (BCAA’s, creatine, caffeine) that have been proven to work when I hit a 90% threshold in my training, diet and lifestyle. I don’t expect them to get me to that point, just to give me an extra edge when I’m 10% away from my goal. Document 1

Are you going to stand for something or keep falling for everything?

P.S. Today’s and the next few blog posts have all been (re)inspired by the latest documentary by Chris Bell called Bigger, Stronger, Faster I highly, highly recommend you make it your next rental or google search it and start watching the deleted scenes online.

  1. I precisely wished to say thanks again. I am not sure the things I might have sorted out in the absence of those aspects revealed by you relating to such a question. It actually was an absolute alarming condition in my opinion, however , being able to see this specialized form you processed the issue took me to cry with joy. I’m just thankful for this advice and then have high hopes you know what an amazing job you were providing teaching others with the aid of your blog post. I am certain you haven’t encountered all of us.

  5. Hi Vince,
    Firstly let me thank you and many others who are your friends in the fitness industry you guys are really doing a fantastic job, bring us all sorts of tips, training videos etc; etc;

As I am almot 60 years old now and have been back into active training at the gym for the last 4 years after many many years off and I can honestly say I am now in perhaps the best health and shape of my life getting cut with abs and so on. I have in the last 3 months gone from a strong but bulky 82kgs now down to 72kg and no one I mean no one at the gym can believe I am 60. But enough of me, I just want to tell everyone that I stopped taking protein powder which was the only supplement I was taking a year ago and have not looked back there is no substitue for natural wholesome food, but I understand if people have a busy lifestyle etc they may need some protein powder, but we don’t need more than that other than perhaps a good multivitamin.

Finally, if all experiment a bit find what works for us nutrition wise and listen to all the fantastic info that people like Vince and Roman give us we will no doubt be the very best we can be…So Vince once again thank you my man…

  7. Hey people, I recognize that many people have been browsing for details concerning how to construct wind turbines, so I wanted to present you the following online video I discovered about it. It is named Homemade Wind Generator and you can easily observe it here.

  8. The biggest problem is the ignorance of people. People that think protein powders will do the work for you are wrong and they won’t get anywhere. I know many people in my school that tell me to stop putting so much effort and take more protein. It’s ridiculous. But in the end, it’s their problem. If they want to be stubborn about it and be lazy with their workout, so be it.

  10. Ya know I watched that movie (Bigger, Faster, Stronger) and it really made steroid use look okay and less hazardous.

However, it is completely right on with the supplements (there’s even a scene where he hires a bunch of Hispanics to fill capsules and place labels on bottles to make an unregulated supplement).

Pretty much you get what you pay for. If you want proven things then pay for those. If you want cheap things that aren’t proven then by all means buy them.

    There aren’t any secrets here.

  11. c’mon. It’s all marketing. do we really think that if we wear those particular clothes we’re going to look that good or if we use that particular cologn we’re going to attract the ladies. If we go back to the sixties and early seventies did we really think we were going to have the same sex appeal as the person smoking the cigarette? How many fitness gadget has some buff dude or chick ‘demonstrating’ the gizmo or the program and we think that if we use it we’ll look like that in three weeks, that that’s how they got to looking that way?
Why do we want to believe that someone how so obviously has put a lot of time work, sacrifice and dedication into loking the way they do looks that way because of one product they endorse or even use? Like the man said…we should be smarter than that. Period.

  12. Thank god I only spent money on supplements once in my life and then decided it was too expensive to keep buying them. I used hydroxycut. I did lose 17 pounds in one month but I was doing great with my diet and used to get up at 5 am everyday to do my workout. But I did beleive that the supplement had something to do with my weight loss. I did think it was good. But like I said, not good enough to spend all that money on that if I was doing great just with diet and exercise.
Good thing I found info about the reality about supplements. I will never buy them again.

  13. I have read several magazines featuring buff guys like christian. I have to agree with him that although the magazine features the supplements he consumes, it does not mean that the supplements is all that he is taking. Most people with common sense should know that EVERYONE can get buff. It is the amount of effort they put in, not the amount of supplements/steriods they put in.

There are so many people looking up to these fakes and when the results don't come out like the person in the ad then there they go blaming themselves, cutting themselves down. I can't believe how stupid this guy is and now he's also saying be like me…take Steroids…so there goes millions of views wanting to look like him and think they have to take drugs to do so. This makes me so angry!!

    Hey Vince,
I've been doing this since 1970, I have known a few steroid users and its the same old thing. I liked the clip, but i don't think its going to change things for a lot of young guys. When they want to get big, there view become's "Myopic". They really do believe this nonsense! You can't tell them anything! Even when they see all the bad things that can happen to the body, they still think, oh, that won't happen to me.
    Take care and thanks,
    Joe from Philly.

  18. Hi Vince, this a very controversial subject, I've seen "Bigger Stronger Faster" and I was impressed by the way Chris Bell covered the use not just of steroids but the use by a female Ms Fitness competitor of steroids, slimming drugs, hair extensions, dental work, tanning, plastic surgery, and photoshoots where the "before" and "after" shots were done on the same day . Before photo = relaxed, after = posed and of course a little airbrushing helps. Oh, and classical musicians taking beta blockers to reduce the anxiety of playing before an audience. And porno "stars" taking Viagra to ensure performance. The underlying message was that many people cheat to succeed and increasingly so nowadays. Or maybe we just know more of the truth these days? Anyway, Chris Bell's presentation expertly showed how the Bodybuilding industry preys on the insecurities of young men who maybe need a role model. It's well worth a viewing. My opinion? I agree with Vince. Vote with your cash. The system is so lucrative for those involved that it is self-protecting and it ain't gonna change any tine soon.

  19. Hi a hardly suprising revelation there in the video, as almost everything that's advertised is an exageration of the truth. Unfortunately supplements are expensive and a lot of people who really can't afford them buy them wasting their money waiting for gains that are not coming. It's also indicative of the 'don't wait or work for it- just buy it' mentality thats out there. You can't get a muscular body without working out, you can't get a six-pack without eating correctly, its common sense, which is apparently in short supply. I would encourage everyone who has commented to tell at least 5 people about the video and get the message out there, hard work pays off, the rest is just posing.
    cheers Brendan

  20. Hi Vince, thanks for the video. The real question is "would he look the way he does if he hadn't used steroids and that supplement crap." Of course we should try to see deeper but ads are misleading. They don't openly say "he's like that because he's taken 'Moremuscle 300+' or whatever for 10 years but that's what they expect you to believe. Otherwise they wouldn't even bother shooting such commercials. Besides, some bodybuilders advertize new products while they have been training for over 15 years to sometimes. It's obvious that they haven't used those new products long enough to claim they look the way they do thanks to those products.
So, yes the supplement industry is misleading, but you may be good shot, if there's no target you won't kill anyone. Meaning, we should be more careful and stop acting as a target.
    Take care!

  21. I'm not too shocked myself, when I was looking to see what kind of creatine to get and came across the creatine report I saw how monohydrate is the one you have to make first and then anything after is pretty much marketing or wishful thinking as it's hard to do any further reactions.
Also, I quit taking anything artificial which rules out alot (why do they need food coloring in pills? it makes sense for flintstones vitamins :p but not sports supplements.) Besides I tried at least a couple expensive pills or powders a couple years ago and didn't notice much difference except the preworkout booster giving me the shakes.
Right now I do take creatine and glutamine. I need to hurry up and watch BIgger Faster Stronger, it's been on my netflix list for awhile :p

  23. Disgusting. I've never taken any supplements or steroids or anything else to look better. I trust Dr. K and have been using some of his exercises over the past few weeks. It's work and progress is slow, but the improvement is evident. The exercise is a lot more intensive than the 1 1/4 hour walk I used to take on weekends, but in 20 minutes during the week and 40 minutes on the weekend, I'm saving time and getting a lot more out of the effort. This, combined with good (but not perfect) eating habits, is doing what I want it to do. There are no better shortcuts.

  25. im not saying all supplements are bad because they're not…i sell wellness supplements myself simply because we cant get all the nutrition we need in the food we eat today. but that doesn't mean we should fall for all diet supplement ads out there that promote quick results…only drugs can change our bodys that fast…naturally we take time to transform and change…some of us faster or slower than others factoring in genetics lifestyle etc…but the fact is that change is possible…you're a perfect example vince…40lbs+ of muscle in 6 months right? WOW! and the great part is once we know how to do things right…like using your systems. its awesome to know that we can ALL get results that we want. we just need to understand that we cant just sit on our butts and change the way our body looks and keep it that way and all these money sucking worthless supplements aren't gonna allow us to do that either…sure a few of them might help if we bust our ass in the gym but they aren't gonna miraculously change your body. we need to do things the right way…the smart way. and vince im with you all the way! i love the info you give out and you cover it all…thanks!!!

  26. hey vince, i agree with everything you said in your blog and your comment basically stating that you can't compare who the true winners are anymore due to all the drugs out there which are just stupid. i believe that this world has become so relient on "instant gratification" with computers internet cell phone etc that we just expect everything to come instantly…not to mention the majority is lazy and doesn't want to work hard to get what they want. therefore steriods were invented…how to get jacked quick. well when these bodybuilders "get jacked" on drugs and steroids then promote some kind of supplement product to gain muscle or lose fat, those of us who aren't educated enough (i'm not speaking from experience) believe that that one product is our quick fix…well wake up ppl our bodys dont just change over night without serious altering ie surgery or steriods…

  28. I'm actually not too surprised to hear that another fitness ad guy is on steroids. It's actually quite sad to hear that most people would sacrifice their overall health in the long run just to look good right now. It pays much more to do it naturally but it does take more work. More work i'd be willing to do because that's just my attitude and my beliefs. Good video though. Very enlightening.

Yes of course that is the way, but sometimes it takes an honest dude to convince those who just don't want to belive that to look a certain way is not vialble without taking for example steroids. However, this does not mean that we cannot have one hell of a natural physique, such as yours naturally, with dedication, knowledge, good nutrition etc…

  33. not really surprising to me it is just a shame that people are so… gullible as to believe (I did once so I am not immune) that if you take the same suppluments that so and so takes you will look just like him/her or do this workout you will look the same as him/her as well. As I have gotten older I realize that what it takes is hard work, proper diet, belief and a lot of dedication. I remember a long time ago one of my favorite bodybuilders was caught taking illegal substances and mentioned he did not think they (the show) was testing so rigorously or he would have prepared (cheated ) better I was a teenager at the time and it really burst my bubble. The guy Christian B has to make a living and if like he says people are not smarter than that then oh well

  43. Can’t say I’m surprised. Most famous celebrities just get paid to say a bunch of crap and get people to buy it just because that person uses it. Very wrong in my opinion, especially in this case. People are gonna want to get ripped and are gonna get this supplement and just fail because that’s not what Christian used.

That makes me so angry, but not at him, I do feel like punching him in the face, but at the people who buy this product and think because he uses it and he looks great doesn’t mean hes not using anything else like steriods. Which then makes me extremely boil with rage at the fact that they tell only half of the truth and leave the most important details out.(HE WAS USING STERIODS).

I’m about to stop wasting my money. Seems like if you eat well & in moderation you can get size & cuts. Not sure if these supplements are doing anything. Like to hear others opinions.

  48. I agree that the guy isn’t doing anything deliberately wrong. He is just trying to make money for himself through a modelling job and if he can live with some of the things that his picture next to a supplement is insinuating then thats just him. The big effect that things like this have is on the younger generations. I myself am 17 and know that a lot of friends have been and are being sucked into these scams. It’s all about being realistic, researching things you wanna try, and learning things for yourself.

  50. Unfortunately, we always want that “quick fix” or “magic pill” that will make us get bigger, thinner, better looking, whatever. I’ve done it so many times, and like everyone else, no change. The change is going to come when I get off my duff, hit the gym HARD and with INTENSITY and give it that “never back down” attitude. Fortunately for me, I do have great genes, and I bulk up fairly easy, but if I don’t get seious and committed to what my goal is, then forget about getting bigger, leaner or whatever else. Time for me to change my attitude, get serious and quit throwing my money down the drain. It is up to ME to make that committed change. No one else can do it, except me.

  60. Shocking that he would actually admit something like that or to be completely honest, but not surprising. It is common sense, however being someone like myself that doesn’t know much about nutriention and working out. I can see why so many people get dragged into buying or at least trying all those supplements to see if it will help them get where they need to be and thats what they count on. I think its completely wrong!!!! I am and have been a victim of this. But, if you have no one that can show you the way then forgive us for being lost. Now I’m not saying ALL supplements are bad, but they’re very, very few out there that are actually benefital to us. Especially from everything I’ve read and researched on a lot of popular products. Just do your research. Average supplements go from 45-75 bucks or more you owe it to yourself to at least do some reading to make sure it’s worth it.

There are people just like him everywhere in the fitness and business industry they get paid big bucks to endose their products and look the way the do no matter what to complete the visual package they’re trying to sell you. Its all about making the big money and greed. Put it this way… why would they come out with a product that will fix all or most of your fitness or weight struggles? They wouldn’t make very much money doing that… or as much. It completely defeats the purpose why they spend so much money on advertisement and the presentation on marketing the products.

Just my thoughts… but, of course I’m only stating the obvious. The obvious I just never wanted to admit to myself, because at the time what other option did I have to not believe them. But, I am very disappointed and pissed off that he is completely comfortable endorsing a product and say all these positive things about it and that its supposed to help you lose fat, but also takes steiroids on top of that. It makes you take another look at all those other supplements in those fitness magazines in a whole new way.

  61. I actually don’t have some long comment or statement regarding this subject.. Maybe I’ve read more than the average joe about supplements (even though I’m only 18 years old) and at the same time I’m a natural skeptic.. But I for one have never believed in all these bogus ads for supplements. I know that it is fitness models who have done what they felt was necessary to get the look they needed for the ads.. A lot of the times they don’t even use the supplements themselves and sometimes, like with Christian, they’ve used steroids to become what they are..
I’m sorry guys, but I’m a fan of his statement that we should know better – or at least think twice.

  79. Unfortuantely, as the previous post mentions, the victims her are the young. Those of us who have been around and are seriuos about our training will have tried and tested many supplements and walked that expensive road to the revelation that most of the items sold are virtually worthless. Or, that the clinical tests supporting the claims are either biased ,or performed on malnourished , young or injured individuals. The supplements wil have little effect on well conditioned , well nourished athletes/individuals.To get a truly accurate picture of what works for you would require you to record every session you do, everything you eat and what supplements you are taking.Look at the effects and then make a considered decision on its benefits. With all of the supplements available, this could take years.Experience tells you that drugs are what these guys are about. There is no shame in that , it is required for what they do.For the rest of us, regular quality training and good nutrition using the few supplements that are good, you know what they are, will provide good results, without the health risks and fraudulent steriod risks that these people take.
The choice is yours, spread the word about the down side of steriods, fake gear, strong stuff sold as weaker, the fact that its not how big you can get, but how much your body can endure. The fact that although the steriods are a part, these people still train and eat expensivelly.
    The choice is yours.
    Train hard, train smart.

  84. Thanks for the video, Vince. Well, I did not know who Chris was. At first, I was amazed by his body. But after knowing it was the steroids work, I lost almost all my respect. But I do still have little respect that he honestly admitted it was because of steroid (unlike most other people comitted to the dark-side of this industry).

I have never used any supplements though a lot of times (until now), I am tempted to try one (especially because of the fact that I am a “hardgainer” and I thought without it, I would never be muscular). For years, I accepted the fact I would never be able to build muscle because of my anti-drug ideology. But then I found your no nonsense muscle building book. You describe how to build muscle without all those evil drugs. Not only that, it really works, it also re-affirms my anti-drug ideology which now I know for sure that I stand on the right side for this one. Thanks once again, Vince

  88. Sadly this jerk-off [CB] represents everything thats wrong with the world! Lie, cheat steal and get rewarded with endorsements what a prick! So now the question IS what do WE do about it? First why not name and shame [have a BS'ers forum where you can vote on the biggest scam/con merchant - details & proof required to be fair]. Next have a PAID membership where supplements, minerals and other REAL stuff gets evaluated by ave-joe members and pro’s! Then place that ACTUAL percentile of the whole picture next to it [ie creatine = 5% maybe upto 12% when stacked with L-arginine]. In the final analysis its all about HORMONES! The safest way to effect lasting healthy change is get the best nutrion for you and exercise the proper way for your body type. Intelligent work, well executed, will definitely impact your hormones endogeneously; results are a given. Vince knows his stuff; i’ve spent 7 years researching the core data he’s got it all. Kudos Dude!

  94. yeah hey um im not an expert on supplements in anyway but im 17 and i know im no body builder or anything but yeah i was taking a whole bunch of supplements for like a year, reading all the magz and articles, and working out like 4-5 times a week for about an hour each day and not seeing any results. All my mates where skinny n so was i and they were like “dude ur a fucking idiot taking all those shakes n working your arse off, and you still look the same”…. funny thing was they were right. but yeah all these supplements say “GET RIPPED FAST!!!!” and all sorts of shit like that, the bottom line is, instead of a protein shake i now have a chicken avacado salad sandwich and a multi vitimin tablet and its pretty much exactly the same thing as a protein shake hahaha and its alot cheaper too.

now im in week two of vinces eating ideas/workout ideas so far its working out and im getting slowly bigger. The hardest thing is sticking to the diet.

i strongly beleive that the hardest thing about anyworkout plan or diet anywhere in the world no matter who you are or where you go is simply being honest with your self and sticking to your deit and being honest about what you eat(also proper weight lifting technique)…. haha anyway thanks for reading if you could be bothered, took a fair while to type but yeh thats what i think. cheers

    some aussie kid

ps. i thought vinces SITE spent a lot of time trying to convince the reader that his ideas accualy work and not enough time accualy telling you what to do, leading you to get bored and stop reading or doubt the program, dont get me wrong so far its been all good but some ppl just cant be bothered reading like 20pages of writing… just my thoughts im probably wrong haha. thanks guys. Good luck, get built n get chicks!

  95. Hey Vince. I’ve been getting emails from both you and Lee Hayward for about 3 weeks now and definately seeing some benefits from the tips you guys are sending. Many thanks. I think that both the advertisers/endorsers and the people taking these supplements are to blame. It’s the people buying this stuff just want that quick fix to looking good without putting in the effort. It’s just the way the world wants to do it these days. Anything to get them there quickly and easily. Im not saying you have to absolutely slave for a nice physique, but you do have to put in work for it. As for the advertisers they can only be described as greedy and morally deficient. Im not gonna lie and say i havn’t been duped before but im only 21. Young and learning.

  103. I have been working as a trainer since about 1990, training evrything from the beginner to the olympic competitor, and seen supplements come and go. The supplement market is a very, very lucrative market and as such it will invite to scams and bogus claims. Very few out there have the possibility or time to learn about the myriads of supplements out there and even fewer have the knowledge to know how the different compounds effects your body.
But to say that supplements dosen´t work or will help you reach your goal quicker are also wrong! If used properly, some supplements will help you achieve your goals quicker. But, and that is a big but, you need to know which one to use and in what quantities. This, of course, will differ from person to person, both quantities and supplements. That is one of the reasons you should seek help from an experienced and knowledgable trainer.
The main concern though is to have a solid backbone of good nutritious food designed after your needs and goals and to remember that supplements are just that – supplements!
And as always if a product seems to good to be true – it probably is!
If there is something unclear or if I used the wrong words, I am sorry – writing from Sweden…

It is our responsibility to educate ourselves regarding our health. It makes me laugh when I see commercials showing a fitness model (girl or guy), who is obviously spends most of her/his time in the gym promoting some silly spinning dick that probably would be more useful as a playing device for children than exercise equipment . 112. Vince, nice to see someone else standing against the deluge of false marketing. I am a 63 year old trainer. I lost 110 pounds, went from 38% body fat to 18% and losing still today, using ideas like yours and other professional trainer. I use Whey portein and creatine on a regular basis because they have consistently been shown as useful by yourself and others. Everything else on the shelf of my local health food store scares me to death. I lost all my weight and fat and gained about 18 pounds of lean muscle eating a combination of lean protein, complex carbs (portioned controlled) and fibrous carbohydrates while drinking lots of water. I did this all naturally outside of the whey protein and creatine. I will not train any of my clients unless they follow a strict natural food nutritional program. I climb all over them if they even mention popular supplements mentioned on TV. Now there are drug adds abounding promising guranteed body fat loss without exercising. We must becoming more stupid for this commercials to being gaining popularity. I applaud you for your attempt to educate the world about supplements and other misleading, if not totally false, advertising campaigns.

  114. A double-edged sword indeed…

The thing that sucks about our society today is that like many already said: people are always looking for the quick-easy-instant solution to everything. In addition smucks like this guy walks away with his huge pile of cash because the people blindly believe that he looks the way he does naturally when he essentially “cheated”.

Personally I’d say if you really want to go against the supplement industry with these blogs, you’ve got to post the part of BIGGER STRONGER FASTER where the guy makes his own supplement.

Also all that bs about the company not knowing the guy took steroids. Look, first of all those companies most of the time don’t take normally looking guys, give them the product to try out, then stick them in the adds. No, they have try-outs for stupid meat-heads like this guy, pick the best looking one out there, give them a bottle of their powder bs, then snap a few photos. It’s not the fact that they don’t know whether or not he took steroids…it’s that they don’t care when they are spending all that money they made.

It’s a shame, there are people who work for years trying to use the right products, methods, and gather the right knoweledge to look the best and stay the healthiest, and all this guy had to do was stick a needle in his a@# and he’s suddenly a hero. It’s a shame.

  115. @Anonymous – Many, many studies show creatine is extremely safe, helps repair and build muscle, helps increase strength, and help brain function. Many supplements are bogus, But creatine is proven time and time again to WORK! Creatine Monohydrate at higher doses is proven to be the best form. All of the rip offs of the origional ARE only supplement companies scams. They said hey this works, Lets try and alter this compund and sell it for more money. I have tried creatine ethyl ester, kre-alkylyn creatine, Among others that are in products like NO SHOTGUN, Gaspari’s SIZE ON, Etc. And NONE have remotely came close to the origional result wise. Save your money, go with creatine monohydrate from the start, learn from my mistakes of buying the more expensive creatines.

Because of people like Craig Ballantyne, Mike Geary, Tom Veuto, Brad Pilon, and Jon Beson to name some I have become healthy and fit without the use of supplements. And about steroid I don’t use them I know you can build a great physique with out them, so each to there own on that one. I think all who take supplement of any kind should do the home work on them before taking them its common sense to look into anything that you put into your body that claims to enhance you in some way, just because we read something does make it true so take it into your own hands to look into it first and get as much info as you can before you put things into your body. You should do this with what ever you buy before buying it not just supplement.

On the other hand this advertisment of course is visual, and seems to advertise results as seen on the model. If results are present they should be pesented via measurable results, not pre-existing factors.

It just goes to show how low we have sunken as a people. We have allowed money/capitalism to just destroy our moral fiber. YES!!! we are a capitalistic society yet the love of money not money is the root of all evil!!! Can we blame this model for taking advantage of a course that was set thousands of years ago?? I feel like as a consumer we have a responsibility to ourselves to do our own due diligence… Know one loves you like you love yourself except for our heavenly father. So as long as the BUSINESS of supplements and fitness remains a multi-billion dollar industry we need to continue to listen, learn, and persevere. People like Vince, Craig B, and other have gone through what we have and they have put themselves in a role to try and those who are misinformed, uneducated, or confused about what some of these companies are all about… Does that mean we still don’t need to read, bust our A’s in the gym, eat right etc… NO. What it means is you make educated decisions and try your very best to be healty, happy, and responsible. God bless…

  131. I think this video points out a simple truth that hat you see is not all that it may actually be. And because of that it is very deceiving to trust many people in the fitness industry that by using this ONE thing they got all the results they could ever dream of.
Specifically to this, what we can learn is supplements are just simply crap. Because they will most likely not do you any good unless they are combined with some other chemical that, like steroids, have many negative effects on your body if they are present in excess.
But outside of just this event, this means that us people who idolize something as being so great have to come to the realization that something else might be going on causing whoever to be how they are. What this translates to for me is I do only the things that will get me what I need as long as there are no residual harms to them. Like when a report is due, I will go ahead and slave over it the day it’s assigned and get it done on that very day.
But in regards to fitness in general, what we need to realize is there are a bunch of guys out there that are trying to cheat their way to the top. And if we try to follow their footsteps this will only lead us to failure because these guys do not want to give away ALL their secrets. So they’ll give out one or two while keeping the good ones for themselves. But for those people that want to work so they can really reap the benefits of their hard work, then there is one word that you need to take into account:EFFORT!! And if you have this, then you have to realize that no magic pill is going to get you the results you desire without serious effects on your health.
So go the safe way and when you see how much your trials have paid off, then you will feel truly happy and accomplished.

  133. When I started wasting my money on suppliments (luckly only did it for a couple of months) it had nothing at all to do with the models who endorse them. I couldn’t care less because I am smart enough to know that most of it is staged and it was not the suppliments that got them that fit. What hooked me was when I went into a health start, I told them I was weight lifting and wondered what suppliments would be benificial for me to take. I was loaded with Nitrous Oxide, L-glut, testosterone boasters, and CLA. They showed me the articles and the “scientific proof” and “research” to prove that I needed to take them, and so I did. Luckily it was only a couple of months later I got on some of these forms and realized that there are lots of guys out there (Vince, Joel, Craig, etc) who bulked up, gained muscle, and got ripped without spending all their money on crap. I am very gratiful for you guys. Thanks a ton

Ok that said, the supplement world is dangerous. Being and over 40 bodybuilder as well as a hockey coach and trainer I am always faced with the cure-alls
One thing, notice how the scientific studies are Never Done with people, athletes who are funtioning. Only those who are in some way debilitated to a degree either through vitamin deficiancies or physical deficiancies. The latest one Is No-Oxide
What a joke, promises promises, and all they can boast is it will give you an erection if you never could get one. for $60 bucks CDN. Heck Viagra can do that but no body builder will ever wear a viagra hat like those old guys at nascar
I know its diet diet diet and vitamins and diet, then we go to the gym and kick some butt
Thanks for posting this, as we all see the guys at the gym killing racks but the secret is, Lift for you, do what you can do, progress at your speed and be healthy

  136. Finally after the umpteenth time or getting fit and unfit for too long, I returned to a exercise routine. I did some bodyweight stuff off of the Net, but eventually got myself to a Sports Medicine Clinic to get an Okay for the gym where I work out. In Israel you require a doctor’s letter, no waivers here, the trainer is the “doctor” and he has to know as much about you as your GP–that what the “C” in the CPT is for, it means certified.

At any rate, some trainers are more up to date, and others go by the book. Mine, well, its a very strict routine and the day off is a day off. He sends thee to a Holistic GP who laughed at me when I told her that I was taking Co-Q10 and recommended what to eat, rather drink and it was straight from the greengrocer’s shelf.

Her approach is, what any sensible trainer tells you, I think, if you eat the right stuff you doin’ okay. Indeed, the same hard nose trainer reads the same material that all the CPTs do. His take is that the experts often disagree with each other. The fact is, that maybe a former trainer I had, before this time round, a dude who trained with Weider said, “it’s an individual thing with each client, some things that work for one person don’t work for another. So maybe the trainers that go by the book might take longer to get results, but they are reliable, and you come out healthy and fit, as you ought to be.

Vince; you must have an opinion on that looking at your physique. That’s almost an accusation. If it’s not possible; how did you do it?

On the video; if people who buy that stuff on his say so aren’t offended by what he says, then more fool them. I wonder if his contract was renewed!

  139. If any of the advertised stuff worked, we wouldn’t be having an obesity epidemic. Several people underlined the fact that Christian had to work very hard to get that way. Any good body is a result of hard work, especially the low body fat levels his abs advertise. With the number of scams advertised these days, I am surprised that that many people actually believe any claims they hear. About the lack of nutrition in food, I doubt that is true. If it were so, food would be tasteless. The nutrients make it flavorful and colorful. For example, beta-carotene is, well, orange. Increase veggies and fruit in your diet and skin gets clearer, brain functions better, energy increases, weight goes down. I don’t think we need live our lives in fear, just observe cause and effect. If those apples are bruised and dented in the grocery store, you can bet they are mealy and flavorless. I personally don’t object to the models advertising this stuff. I do object to a company selling a product that has been shown to be ineffective. Placebo effect operates 60% of the time, if you THINK it is going to work, it probably will. Someone up there was talking about high school in the 80s. Try 60s for me. I have been working out (and eating healthy- yeah, long before it was popular – we were called “health nuts”) over 40 years. Don’t take any medicine, drugs, and only a very few supplements. Don’t need them unlike most of my contemporaries. Lots of hard work, and all worth it.

  140. The reason why many (or most) fitness models and body builders are taking supplements is that the market is so competitive that to get extra edge you have to do that. Compare it to a hundred meter runner who takes steroids and run 9.8 and wins the gold medal – if he didn’t take the steroids he’d run 10.0 and be ninth. To him steroids seems to be the only possibility because everyone else who is successful is taking them.
The average person who takes steroids or supplements is just lazy and egotistical and is not afraid of acne..
I think it is terrible that steroid use is so rampant. It is almost as bad as keeping boxing legal.

As with one of the other comments I have been perfectly happy with BCAAs, Creatine and Protien drinks. A lot of the time I used raw eggs for my protein, with excellent results.

His comments don’t surprise me though, this is a society of its not my fault, I defer the responsibility to someone else.

    • Hey Greg,

take note that Greg has figured out what works for him. This is excellent.

In a future post I’ll discuss how to customize your own supplement routine if you do choose to use them but realize you should be making your decisions based on:

      1. How you feel
      2. How you look
      3. Your performance in the gym.

The feedback from those three cues alone will give you enough info on whether you should keep using a product.

  143. Unfortunately we have been brain washed to believe everything in print must be true, otherwise how could they print it. It takes people like you to bring the scams to the fore front and expose the truth of the marketing giants. I am not going to say that all supplements are bad or that steroids can not benefit a person that has health related issues. However, we are talking about aesthetics in this case, and I agree people should be smart enough to figure out that most all of the guy’s in these rag mags are juiced on more than the over the counter supplements. But what do people expect? The Western culture has been lazy by nature when it comes to fitness and turns to the quick fix, magic pill for the answer. I have been there, and because of people like you and Craig Ballantyne, Joel Marion to name a few I have become healthy and fit without the use of supplements.
    Thanks.

  144. I’ve seen this video before. Been training for years, and listened to all the supplement promos. Always thought I needed something to help, but never could afford it. I’m really glad I couldn’t. Now I’m in great shape for my age, and don’t have to worry about anything that supplements may have caused, plus, I still have the money!! It’s hilarious for anyone to try to “cheat” on the discipline, and effort it takes to meet your goals. Just put it into a sports application. Many people have natural ability, but without the work it’s impossible to sustain their level for very long. Discipline, Effort, and time is the only way to long lasting success. I worked with a high school kid who never played any sports, but like Christian was “over stacked.” I don’t know how many times he has told me how stupid it was to take steriods. It was all about how he looked, and had no practical application for him, and he completely ignored the risks. He still lifts regularly, but hasn’t taken any supplements for years. Much smaller now, but very lean and cut.
And hopefully healthy. I don’t want to look good, I want to be GOOD! That’s why I do what I do in the gym, and in the kitchen!

  147. It’s fascinating to me how casually a guy can talk about taking steroids to get his body. So, I guess “kudos” for honesty. It’s his entire livelihood yet he built it artificially. But, you can see that he is conflicted about being a ‘fraud’ with regard to what he represents. Yes, I suppose we consumers should be ‘smarter’, but the reality of marketing is that we make these split-second connections between the end result we see and the product featured. Repeated exposure to these ads does shift the reality of what we imagine is possible from a product. And, we fall into the trap of thinking ‘this one’s gonna work’.

Imagine finding your identity in a certain look i.e. being ripped and muscular and on covers because of a drug you’re on. Take that away and not only does he lose his physique but he loses his IDENTITY!

I’ve been having trouble with my golf game for some time now, I just can’t seem to improve my handicap. So, I bought a gillette razor because I saw Tiger Woods on the advert. I’ve used it every day for three months. Despite getting a really close shave and with less irritation, my handicap hasn’t improved by even a point!!!

I also bought some Armani aftershave some time ago. Despite wearing it on a daily basis, not once has an Italian supermodel draped herself seductively over me and fondled my chest. However, since wearing Armani, I have been offered a lucrative modelling contract. I suppose the whole Italian supermodel thing will come in time, but they should really make that clear on the advert!

The fact is, it’s all about the money and supplement manufacterers know that the best way to market is to appeal to the “quick fix” mentality so prevalent today. What ever happened to good, honest, hard work? My Dad taught me that if it’s worth having and you really want something then it’s worth working for. The harder it is to achieve, the more value it has. I value every positive change in my body because I work hard for it. History has proven that quick fixes are also quick to fail, but what is obtained from hard work lasts a lifetime.

  163. I will say in his defense that he isn’t the way he is solely from steroid use. I know people that take juice and still look like crap because it’s about more than steroids, it’s about training hard, good eating some proven supplements and consistency. Yes steroids will make up for a multitude of sins and allow you to recover faster but just taking them doesn’t make you huge & ripped. We couldn’t all be Jose Conseco just because we took juice and this guy isn’t where he is solely from steriods nor from Hydroxycut. People are inherently lazy in today’s society and will gladly believe marketing because it is easier to do that and blame the stuff for not working than to put down the cake and train hard.

I first heard about Steroids when I asked a heavyweight lifter in the gym and boy was he huge…(I admit I was envious),But when I heard he was taking in steroids, It really got me confused so I decided to research about it and found out it was a drug, And heck was I really pissed because I’ve been taking in Drugs(specially antibiotics due to low resistance from sickness, I was asthmatic too)since i was working my butt at the gym to strengthen my body naturally and my health as well coz I really hated taking in drugs(quarter of our family budget went to my medication where the rest allotted for the bills and city services and FOOD…which i have never enjoyed because “were on a tight budget”damn cheap food)… And oh…before I forget, about the Video, it really Sucks big time…very very disappointing… and I’d still go organic all the wayyyyyyyy…

  165. @Anonymous – The model isn’t to blame, it’s the company he’s working for. In our silly society it’s become the norm to accept that corporations (and other kinds of companies) act immorally, but it’s considered acceptable because the only reason they exist to to make money. Well, the models have to eat too – so don’t blame the guy for catering his product (his image) to what the marketing arm of the supplement industry is looking for. If it wasn’t Christian, it would be some other fitness model (who would also probably be on steroids, because that’s what the industry wants). Hold the source(s) of the issue responsible – the supplement industry, and the consumers (the supplement industry thrives because people keep buying in). So, take action and support people like Vince for providing a bit of education – and get everyone you know to watch that documentary on steroid use, it’s a really good one.

To comment on the REST of bigger, stronger, faster…

They did a pretty good job at unveiling steroid usage to the mainstream.

    However, alot of skewed viewpoints.

I love when they show the guys he picked up off the side of the street make supplements….. . This is RIDICULOUS. By FDA law supplements must be made in a GMP facility…

I could hire anyone off the street and get the ingredients for almost anything you purchase, toothpaste, hair gel, makeup, nail polish remover and get it made in my house, it doesn’t mean its legal and feasible to do so….

And everything is marketed… and marked up… its just manufacturing in general with EVERYTHING you buy…. I laugh when my girlfriend buys Nail Polish Remover for about $5 for 10mL… When i can go down to the automotive supply store and get a Gallon of it for the same price, but because its repackaged, marketed it can demand more money…

I agree also with there are some supplement companies making bogus claims, but there are alot of others who do not….

  169. Really, what this all underscores, is the horrendous credulity and lack of proper perspective which could be made possible by a functional education system… but that will never happen — why? The cynical skepticism derided as corrosive by naifs has been eroded and replaced with corporate brainwash propaganda in the schools system, infesting the supply chains of materials schools depend on…. I thank my lucky stars I grew up in an era where everyone knew..naturally..that ads were out to sell you something and manipulate you.. He’s right, people should be smarter.. doing diligence is your responsibility… unfortunately, school programs that taught people to access tools through which diligence could be exercised have been crippled and removed from all but specialty pockets of the academy…….

  170. I agree with Christian that if people choose to believe he is only taking one product he is advertising, then shame on people who choose to believe that. By the same token, Christian’s ethics are unbecoming to him. He is adding to the problem by being greedy, doing the modeling ads for the almighty dollar and not caring what kind of message being sent. I don’t respect a person who says one thing and does another, especially when it involves a human being’s health. Shame on Christian. Another steroid freak.

What difference is this from ANYTHING related to fitness Vince?? I’ve seen more than one Fitness Book, Video, Ebook, you name it doing the EXACT same thing… Steroid usage is very prevalent.. is it misleading, yes. But it happens all the time and not exclusive to the supplement industry. I know many supplement companies that do their best to not promote “steroid” enhanced athletes, but its virtually impossible to monitor.

How do you know the B and A’s on your site aren’t from guys using steroids?

I Know many in the fitness modeling industry who do not look like “steroid users” but ARE definitely using.

  172. I think they are preying on folks – and mostly kids. I say this because he used/is using an ILLEGAL substance as “the player to be named later” — it’s NOT something LEGAL he’s not telling us about.

I stick with the fundamentals: work hard in the gym, get plenty of REST, and eat right – though I do use protein powders and creatine as supplements. I am CONSTANTLY advising HS kids on this, and trying to steer them AWAY from the exotic “HYPO-GAIN” junk. Some listen … some don’t. Hey, they’re kids.

  173. You know, back in High School (mid 80′s…showing my age) I was very active with a nice physique: Mesomorph. However, I was also a hard gainer at 5’10″ and 165lbs at about 8% body fat, I just couldn’t lift the heavy weights I wanted to. Then, steroids got passed around to the guys on the senior varsity football squad and these guys were already bigger than I or the average guy on the team to begin with. Not long into the summer training I saw the changes. The benches went from 225lbs to 350lbs for reps of 5! And yes, the muscularity came soon there after. That season was there best season…go figure. It was tempting and I was offered it, but never took it. The acne and fear kept me away, thank God!

Needless to say, I saw it first hand for two straight years. I don’t know what is going on with these guys now, but once they see me in our 20th reunion, they might think I am on steroids! LOL!! I only take a few high-grade supplements and a protein powder. I am now 200lbs at 12% body fat (looking to lower that) and lift some pretty heavy weight, but all natural.

Just lift safely, consistently push yourself, follow Vince’s advice and take just a few supplements he suggests and leave the rest alone! Just eat good dang food! :-)

  174. Some of these comments have been hilarious.BR/BR/1). What consumer is going to buy a supplement supported by a guy who looks like their neighbour? They want to see BIG RESULTS on BIG PEOPLE.BR/BR/2). Steroids, in moderation, aren’t exactly the worst thing one can take.BR/BR/3). People degrading professional bodybuilders for taking steroids are being somewhat naive. Yes, they use. But I doubt the critics are up at 4-5AM doing hours of cardio before a show, getting up in the middle of the night for protein, and carrying little cooler bags of food around with them. It’s an element that levels the playing field for all of the competitors. BR/BR/4). I respect Christian for telling the truth, on film – he must have known he was risking his job but he tried to be as honest as possible.BR/BR/5). It’s difficult to understand all the hate – in general, those models WOULD use the product that they are promoting – as mentioned before, they would get it for free. Even aside from this, there are a myriad of supplements out there that can help people reach their goals, and a large quantity more that won’t. Low fat chocolate sauce isn’t a diet food; low carb bread is an abomination. They’re unlikely to help people reach their physique goals, yet they’re palmed off as health foods. Be aware that it isn’t only the supplement industry that does this.

  184. I would like to add another comment and frustration with the sport of bodybuilding. BR/BR/I believe this is coming from the athlete in me and I’ll probably elaborate in a future newsletter as this is a different topic…sort of. BR/BR/When I look at an athlete, I love to let my mind think, “I wonder what percentage of that physique is a result from genetics? I wonder what percentage of that sprint was a result from nutrition? I wonder what percentage of that lift was a result of lifestyle? I wonder what percentage of that finish was from hard work? I wonder what percentage of that record was from proper coaching?”BR/BR/You see what I’m saying?BR/BR/As soon as I hear that drugs were a factor of an athletes physique, swim, bike, run, lift or whatever sport they compete in, I think, “What percentage of that is the drugs? How much were the drugs responsible for?” BR/BR/The fact is that drugs can make up for a sloppy diet and sloppy training. BR/BR/I lose all credibility and inspiration in the athlete. You following me?BR/BR/Here’s what I think to myself, “I wonder how big I could get if I was willing to take unlimited steroids etc?” BR/BR/I also think, “I wonder what Jay Cutler would look like in comparison to me if he didn’t take a single steroid? I bet we would have similar builds…”BR/BR/Don’t worry, I am sure Jay Cutler would still be way bigger because of genetics and frame (I’m not taking that away from him at all) but it’s hard to respect a physique on someone that might be almost the same as mine if they were natural too. BR/BR/You see what I’m saying? BR/BR/I just can’t stand going to watch a bodybuilding show and having no idea what percentage of that physique is natural and what percentage is actually from nutrition, training and lifestyle… that just bugs the heck out of me. BR/BR/The one thing I loved about the PURITY of my high school and University running days was that you always knew the champions were the true champions. No body did drugs and every finish was from good old fashioned hard work and guts (of course genetics and coaching played a huge factor) but everybody had equal opportunity to win.BR/BR/After every race, the winner was truly the winner on that day. BR/BR/Because of drugs, it’s sad, because you never know who the true winners are anymore. BR/BR/You with me?

  185. I think it is disgusting and deceitful. It should be highly illegal to advertise using obvious steroid losers..oops I mean steroid users! BR/I intend to tell everyone I know, email it to everyone with the message to forward it onBR/Boycott the supplement companies and not that writing a letter of disgust and complaint will help, but it will at least be a start. BR/I am a 39 year old fit female.BR/A few years ago before I became a personal trainer, I actually used hydroxycut. It worked a little bit, but not as much as they claim, I was hitting the weights four times a week and doing cardio 5 times a week and eating clean. The only thing Hydroxycut and other fat loss supplements did for me REALLY was to put me in hospital with a now permanent short circuit in my heart and a messed up thyroid. In short, the use of that almost killed me. My blood pressure after a killer workout was 80/50, on a regular day of relaxing, it would be around the 60/40 mark. Deadly, and theres nothing you can do to raise your BP super fast either. My doctor almost took my licence off me because of the constant blackouts. I am on the road to recovery, but i will within the next year need to have a small defibrillator put into my heart. BR/So all i can say is BR/BUYER BEWARE!!!!

  187. I have to say I appreciate Christian’s honesty. A lot of muscle guys look like him, yet swear they are all natural (yes they do go to the gym and do the exercises, but they do have chemical assistance).BR/BR/However, what really opened my eyes to the reality of the muscular bodies that are advertised as available to everyone (but really only available to those who can grow muscle while using anabolics) is the book titled The Adonis Complex.BR/BR/What is needed to be advertised is what a regular 40 hr/week working person who lifts weights, eats healthfully, and does not take anabolics. BR/BR/This may decrease the demand for the drugs, but I don’t know. The ripped, muscular look (like Christian’s) is seen as the ideal.

  188. Hey Vince, I agree this is as controversial topic and the whole supplement industry is very misleading especially to young males. I once was one, I hope most wise up eventually and realize what is going on. What can I say? Live and Learn….BR/BR/The problem lies in the fact that bodybuilders and even many of the jacked up fitness models will continue to endorse the supplement companies as long as they are signing the checks. Most of the pro bodybuilders make WAY more money in endorsements then they do competing on stage. So is it really any surprise? I think not. No need to mention some of the pro athletes, who do the same thing. BR/BR/Is it misleading to put some huge shredded guy in an ad, holding a bottle of magic pills? I think most would agree.BR/BR/At least the guy in the video is being honest and saying he takes drugs. Most of these guys are not that forward unless you get them off camera, one on one. In many cases they are not lying in the ads, they are probably taking the stuff in the ad in many cases. They get it free with the endorsements anyways. They are just not saying what else they taking illegally etc..BR/BR/Anyways great topic, I think you are doing the right thing by building awareness. Get the word out and let people know. I also look forward to seeing this movie… Bigger, Stronger, Faster movie by Chris Bell.BR/BR/I think the most important thing though is that we CAN build a great physique without taking all this “junk”, whatever happened to being healthy and looking good?

BR/BR/Ignoring Christian’s steroid use, I think he’s right in saying that people should be smart enough to know that taking some random fat burner isn’t going to make you suddenly buff. You have to bust your hump to build muscle, drop fat, and ultimately look good. BR/BR/I appreciate that Christian is open about his steroid use in obtaining his form. Otherwise, a busting-my-hum person like me might not be “smart enough” to realize that he or she can’t obtain that body without resulting to illegal drugs. That’s what’s misleading.

Just like the narrator, Arnold and Stallone were my heroes coming up, and part of the reason why I took up weight training in the first place was because of them, and others like Carl Weathers, Serge Nubret and Franco Columbu. The reason why I kept “falling off the wagon with my training” is because I was constantly disappointed that neither working extra hard and trying to eat right, or doing the same thing and taking those “supplements” was producing the same kind of results for me that they were having. I didn’t know any better, but now we ALL know. Have I considered steroid use? Of course I have. Have I considered the side effects? Well, let me put it this way: knowing the health risks is the reason why I haven’t taken them to this day, and never will. BR/BR/What pisses me off more than anything is the knowledge that like the ‘war on drugs’, billions of taxpayer dollars are being wasted on this equally bogus “war on performance-enhancing drugs.” When you look at someone like Christian Boeving, you have GOT to know that no one comes by a body like that simply through good eating and exercise. It JUST DOESN’T HAPPEN.BR/BR/If my drive were strong enough to break into the world of fitness modeling or bodybuilding, I guess I would break down and take that “Mexican vacation” that so many bodybuilders and fitness celebrities do. But that’s a game for guys MUCH, much younger than I am now.BR/BR/And I find it amusing that there are so many who hold the view that using steroids and HGH are a form of “cheating.” If everyone in professional sports who are using PED’s were banned from their sports right now indefinitely, the sports industry would crash overnight just like Wall Street recently. BR/BR/Until the expectations we put on our athletes and “heroes” changes, this whole landscape of “better bodies thru chemistry” never will…BR/BR/SGJR.BR/Vienna, VA

  193. I”They tell you that hard training and certain supplements were the solution, but it’s really anabolic steroids.”/IBR/BR/Wouldn’t it be more accurate to say hard training and anabolic steroids were their solution?BR/BR/I’m enjoying your videos, Vince, by the way, and I’m no fan of steroids.BR/BR/Oh certain supplements I believe are excellent, but not for bodybuilding, for health. A few like garlic, grapeseed extract (in reasonably small quantities), omega 3 fatty acids especially concentrated mercury free fish oil, vitamin D, and probiotics as being the likely health king granddaddy of them all … these are a worthwhile investment.BR/BR/”IIf you don’t take supplements what should you do? Well – simple – good food.”/IBR/BR/I’m only started down that path and have lots of “catch up” to do… but good food? I agree. Far more important than supplements, even the healthy worthwhile few I suggest.

  194. Good stuff Vince ! BR/BR/As usual, you write very interesting articles. BR/BR/Supplements industry is 90% hype. I just can’t understand how people can believe in those flashy jug design saying “Hardcore vascularity! Hardcore lean muscle gain! etc..”. Like you just said, certain supplements can help you out reaching your goals, but they will not do it for you.BR/BR/Really good post ! It’s my first time here, and I must say I find your site to be really great ! BR/BR/Keep the good work, Vince!BR/BR/Charles M.

I’m a Chiropractor and I follow one simple rule regarding supplements: Don’t waste your money until the product has proven itself on the market for at least ONE year (Vince suggests three years). In my twenty years of practice this has saved me a lot of money as Creatine, Glucosamine and prohormones have been the only true new “breakthrough” products.

  196. Hi VinceBR/I am aware of the movie bigger, faster, stronger although I have not seen it. Yes, supplements do run rampant amongst some of the better known names in our industry. However, it is fitness professionals like you and me who try to educate the general population that you can have six pack abs NATURALLY simply by eating cleaner and regular exercise with free weights and being consistent about it. Do I take supplements…. yes. I do my best to educate my clients on the various supplements out there (such as a good quality multi vitamin and whey protein powder) that are useful where they won’t be throwing their money down the drain.BR/BR/BestBR/sharifitnessBR/www.sharifitness.comBR/www.myspace/shari_fitness.com

  197. When an attractive, slim actress with beautiful hair/skin/teeth is seen advertising for X brand of shampoo/soap/toothpaste etc, it doesn’t mean she got that way just because she used the advertised product (if she uses it). BR/BR/On the other hand, there is no indication from the video (I have not seen the ads) that the advertised product did not help Christian in his health or physique in some way. BR/BR/Also, maybe the supplement company did not know Christian took steroids.

  198. Fortunately I have never been hoodwinked into taking these marketing led supplements. The most exotic stuff ive taken is Taurine. I stick to Creatine, Protien, and fish oils and get these in bulk. BR/BR/Really interesting what one of the posters remarked on food quality. I tend to juice alot of fruits and veg, but if todays food are so defunct in vital nutrients, whats the alternative? Would following an organic foodstuffs diet work? What if for those who cannot afford a pure organic diet do to maximise the amounts of fruit and veg while minimising the nasty stuffs? BR/BR/Great comments so far

  199. Hey there, Vince. Dr. Bryan Walsh here. I hope you’re well . . .BR/BR/Marketers have preyed upon the emotions of unsuspecting buyers long before people wanted to see their abs. BR/BR/The proverbial “snake oil salesman” selling some magic pill to cure something that ails us (i.e. being fat, bald, unhappy, etc) has been around for longer than most people realize. BR/BR/Unscrupulous people and companies will always exist, and not just in the supplement industry. As consumers, we do need to be smarter than that. We can’t count on the companies to be honest with us no matter how much we think they Ishould/I be . . . that’s just not reality. BR/BR/We must be responsible for ourselves. To point a finger at them merely empowers them even more and makes us the victim. BR/BR/But something needs to be clarified. The entire supplement industry is not all bad, nor are all supplements evil. BR/BR/Therapeutically there are a number of things that can actually help people, and do on a daily basis. And there are good companies out there.BR/BR/For example certain amino acids support neurotransmitter function, various herbs support healthy blood sugar management and a number of vitamins help reduce risk of certain diseases.BR/BR/There are a few good companies in the supplement industry, just like there are a few good politicians in government – they are just few and far between.

  200. I have never commented on anyone’s blog before so you can see that I feel strongly. BR/BR/I have been a natural therapist for 40+ years and I am disgusted with my profession. I know only too well what garbage people are being pushed into under the guise of taking supplements to get well. Many supplements are actually making them sicker. Most supplements are not formulated to do what they suggest they will. And if people knew the origins of many of the so called natural products they wouldn’t touch them with a barge pole. BR/BR/They are being charged big bucks for ingredients worth a fraction of a cent. And don’t get me started on the misinformation that is being circulated to get a sale. Then there is the trials and political licensing – well they’re a joke.BR/BR/There are a handful of good supplements but most people do not hear about them because the hype about the empty supplements smothers them. BR/BR/If you don’t take supplements what should you do? Well – simple – good food. BR/BR/But wait – I have more. Most of the food is empty of everything except chemicals, nutrition free substances, salt and sugar but are high in calories. It fills people up and makes them crave more of the same.BR/BR/People are being tricked into following a healthy diet but there are no nutrients in the fruits and vegetables because of poor growing methods and inhumane animal husbandry and on top of that they are laden with toxins. Often these ‘healthy’ diets are imbalanced and missing huge chunks of valuable substances.BR/BR/The people following these diets are literally starving. But if they happen to have gained weight because of this rubbish food they are publicly and globally ridiculed. They need steering toward real food not cynasism.BR/BR/Shall we touch on the low marketing tricks where advertisers stoop to emotionally evoking fear or vanity, where they target the weak and vulnerable who need help not lies.BR/BR/People have no option but to be ill and not to be able to think clearly – have their bodies go fat, muscles work inefficiently, be constantly tired and just about everything else. BR/BR/The body is magnificent – it can repair itself, regain its shape, gain energy, delay aging – everything – but only if it gets what it needs – Nutritious food in the way nature intended us to eat it, pure clean water and fresh air. Add quality sleep and exercise to the mix and you have everything you need – well almost. BR/BR/Supplements will not replace the enjoyment and health a sound nutritious meal can give. When did you last socialize over a supplement drink. Supplements will not take the place of exercise or pure water, or the thousands of constituents in real food that cannot be put into a tablet/powder form.BR/BR/When are people going to realize that they are having the wool being put over there eyes. BR/BR/There is only one answer for their problems and that is eat nutritiously, drink cleanly, breath strongly, exercise and work hard. BR/BR/But that of course wont lighten their pockets to the same extent or produce big profits for supplement companies.BR/BR/You only get what you put into it.

  201. I disagree with anonymous – morally and legally – he is misrepresenting the truth.BR/BR/Such statements would never be made in relation to “drugs” which are more strictly regulated and are subject to stringent regulatory approval processes.BR/BR/The potential impact of health supplements on the body can be profound and the consequences of their mis-use are often no lesser than prescription drugs.BR/BR/Reforms are well overdue!!

  202. The man is not doing anything wrong as such. Like any product, people are paid to endorse one of many that they have at hand.BR/BR/At age 31 I’m smart enough now not to waste money on anything other then protein powder, bottled water and my home gym.BR/BR/Sadly its the younger ones who are affected by miss-leading advertising. I know in my teens I believed everything I read.
