Am I right or wrong? Men are obsessed with sex and looking good to women.

A recent study I read said that sex was central to a man’s happiness.

Money came a close second, but sexual activity was the strongest predictor of happiness – the more sex, the greater the happiness.

I have noticed that many successful men are extremely methodical about their careers and personal finances but not so much “on the ball” when it comes to improving their sexual attractiveness to women.

I think men have a general idea, like we discovered in the last post, but not as sure as they would prefer.

We know that women like fit and athletic-looking men and shun guys “too big” or who are fat slobs, but that’s about it. I’ve seen some pretty attractive women with guys who look like skinny marathon runners and others with guys who would be classified in the “Mr Olympia” category.

As I shared in my last post, I believe men need at least 20-30 pounds of new muscle mass to attract women.

But in reality, we don’t know 100%.

Until today… we are bridging the gap.

I typically don’t read a lot of research because of scientists stir up images of dweeby guys who have no interest in ladies or have much game. However they do know what women want from recent scientific studies that revealed every detail of the female ideal for personality, muscularity, body fat and somatotype.

Use this info to increase your odds with driving your significant other crazy or finding “the one.”

Here we go…

A woman is more inclined to be sexual with a man who is easy on her eyes. She wants someone who is attractive on her body and from across the room.

She enjoys showing off her super-stud partner to her friends, who will agree that she’s found ‘a catch.’

I can vouch.  One of the first questions my girlfriends friends asked her when she said she met me was, “Is he hot?”

I take pride in knowing my girlfriend can answer that question with pride 🙂

Today’s women like the status that goes with having a lean, fit, successful-looking man on her arm. Athletic, strong men portray the image of success that women want.

I’m not a “pick-up artist” or going to coach you on how to approach a women but I can help you how to build a body that will make you more attractive with a killer body training less than 3 hours per week in my book No Nonsense Muscle Building.

The Goods what-women-want

Surprisingly the results from the studies were extremely similar, all around the world.

“V-tapered” torsos, broad shoulders and narrow waists were the primary preference by women.

Skinny guys and overweight guys were not favored by the majority of women.

This was proved by a study on females in New Zealand and California.  Athletic and muscular men are always chosen over skinny and overweight men. Even a study from Cameroon and China showed they would go for muscular men instead of skinny and overweight men.

So it’s safe to say that a strong, athletic and muscular body will make you successful with the ladies whether you’re in New York City, Iceland or the Jungles of Borneo.

Women are most attracted to guys with broad and round shoulders. They want men with a larger chest and arms than normal, but not excessively large. You need tight and toned biceps and triceps but don’t worry about 22-inch guns that make your shirts rip. Massive arms are not as important as proportion.

Likewise, defined and tigh pecs are definitely going to score you extra points, a chest so massive that you have stretch marks will turn women off.

The “V-taper” is a must. Women love a physique that starts with broad shoulders and ends with a narrow waist. Developing large lats is the key to the taper look. The lats give fullness to the back and make you stand out in a crowd.

A narrow waist will drive girls crazy, especially “those lines” around the hips that require a super leanness. A fat gut is the kiss of death so don’t think your lady doesn’t mind just because all of your buddies have one.

Building and keeping a flat and firm midsection is not easy to do since males accumulate their fat over the abdominals. It’s important you train them with weighted exercises for thickness but eat clean to minimize fat the fat.

    Help! I have been exercising for 15 years and learning from your program and increased my upper arms from 14.5 inches to 15.25 inches over the last year and I can do more exercise. I am 65 years old and not likely to build much bigger, but if I get more I’ll take it. My wife says that she does not like my arms that big, but 15.25 to 15.5 is not big. I keep my waist below 30 inches and recite “Better dead than blimp” during reps for some exercises.
    Does anyone have any suggestions on how to tell her that I don’t want to be as skinny as she thinks best?

    I weigh in at about 175 lbs and am 5’11. I got a good lean body but I am wanting to know what is the best way to rip up the mid section. The four pack is there, although i want to clean up the lower abs! What advice could you suggest vince as far as diet and workouts?

  15. My wife admits that a lean tummy with strong athletic ‘lower ab’area is the sexiest part to her. Not the six pack, just below that. She likes V but does not like an over muscled bulky bodybuilder. She does not like calloused and rough hands. So I guess a lot of core stabilization, lower ab work and getting lean matters most.

    That’s nice in theory – and I *know* there are men out there who have a nice personality AND a nice body…maybe not around here, but somewhere out there. They aren’t mutually exclusive, or they don’t have to be… but so often guys who look good know they look good, and that destroys the character/personality aspect.

    Non-built guys try harder too, because they feel they have an uphill battle.

  30. Hah.. interesting. I guess it depends on what “type” of chick you’re after… do you want someone out for a one night stand and a good time, or someone who wants to keep you?

    For me personally – and most of the women I know – looks don’t matter; I’ve dated guys all across the board. Actually I find well-built guys (like Vince here) a little intimidating, and the few I’ve dated in the past didn’t last long – partly because I wasn’t sure who else (who might be more attractive than me) was making eyes at him too.

    Women (women, not girls) like to *look* at a nice body, but we cuddle and more with a nice character.

    Just sayin’….

    The article is good though – if you’re staying in the “what do women dream of” realm then Vince is spot-on. Shoulders, arms, that V-thing…omg. (And I can’t help being me here, but the face is important – the eyes and the smile.)

In fact, sometimes I get the feeling that by sticking to the somewhat strict rules that a great physique requires, you are missing the time to meet the girls. Also, you can have a great physique, but if you are still shy or cannot talk or lack confidence in other respects, forget about it. Bottomline: do it for YOURSELF. To demonstrate to yourself what you are capable of doing.

Yes Vince i want a body that demands respect and that turns heads i hate being a skinny fat guy with lots of lower body fat and sort of pot-belly the most worked on body part i think every guy should be working and probably the most neglected is the lats there's nothing that demands more respect that would turn more heads than that nice V shaped body aka Cobra Lats

    this is true -sexual attractiveness in males goes hand in hand with their alpha male traits.
    if a man is unhappy with himself – his body or his lack of $ then women pick up on it straight away. this is why it pays to always be happy and confident around women. if building a great body makes you confident then by all means go for it, buy this guy’s system.

    average body but great personality.

    Character goes a long way. Looks can be superficial… at least as far as meaningful relationships are concerned. A balance of both pleasant looks with a health respect for ones health & body along with a great personality and matching set of core values are what I look for. In time we can lose our looks or become chronically ill… but one’s character rarely changes over time. I look for someone who will become my best friend.

  40. I really need to work on my abs. Its the hardest thing to get pleased with in my opinion. Its sooo freaking hard to get a six-pack (and girls likes that most of all, hate people that are more or less born with a sixpack and can eat all that crap and still have it there). much harder than to get big biceps, triceps etc. I was really skinny if i look back at myself 1 1/2 – 2 years ago and today i have so much more mucles but i didnt had a sexpack back then and i dont have it now:(… but im pretty pleased with how my body has transformed over the time. But a sixpack wouldent be wrong.

    • Forearms can be built with simply getting stronger on your major lifts …especially deadifts and pullups. Step ups with heavy weights will build them up too cause your forearms will probably go before your legs.

  43. @Huzix ! – Lat pull down and chins, the latter with a grip wider than your shoulders and thumbs pointing forward when you grab the bar (so that you can see the back of your hands). Make sure you stretch out properly in the bottom of the movement.

    Vince also has a kind of modified chin/pull up variation that I haven’t tried myself though. I think it’s available among his free videos on youtube.

  45. Wow, what a great response. I can’t help but leave my two cents…

    Here’s my dish — I agree with Vince, physical attraction is faaaar underrated. I think we see evidence of this everyday in most long-term relationships — after the initial flame, we start to get “comfortable” and become a bit more laxed in our physical apperance, on both ends, men and women. After a few years, the hard, tight body you once fell in love with is…well, you get the picture.

    HOWEVER, just to make it clear, physical appearance isn’t the ONLY determining factor in choosing a mate. Obviously, I’d be uber-attracted to good looking guy who can carry on a conversation, is funny, easy to talk to etc…

    BUT…we cannot deny millions of years of evolution. I strongly believe it is hard-wired in us to be naturally attracted to the best looking, strongest, and most confident partner. I don’t think I have to get into any details about Darwinsim, but it’s true. At it’s rawest level, a better built, HEALTHIER looking body, coincides with a greater chance of HEALTHIER procreation.

    The body part I notice the most? His teeth and smile 🙂

I have been working my biceps and triceps from your videos, i used to have a nice toned stomach and 6 pack. but now iv got quite a round belly, everytime i work my stomach it seems to just make the muscles bigger, and therefore makes my stomach bigger :S, my arms how ever have gotten alot bigger, biceps and triceps, although they seemed to have stopped getting bigger now. Anytips on how to pass this? and how to reform my stomach? Thankx vince, i do envy your physique, and your posts and emails are very helpful. thank you.

  47. I got nice physique and i got the shape..But its not big..My friends are always telling me that my arms are nice..But not my body..I got the V shape but its like a woman’s waist hahaha, its the fact..But i got a Big arms not proportion to my body..I just want to get rid of it..

    I made a survey in our school..and ive found out that they prefer a fit athletic look guy than the Mr. Olympia guys…

  49. @Merah – Hey Merah, we’ll defintely survey the men to find out what they are looking for in a female although I have a pretty solid idea i can tell you it will have something to do with the C word.. CURVES. Guys love curves… especially in the right places.

    But more importantly, especially for me, is a females respect for her body and interest in improving it and taking care of it to the fullest.

    You need to lift weights. Walking doesn’t build leg muscle. If yo do lots of running you will get endurance training and this doesn’t build muscle. Swimming is also cardio, not muscle building exercise..

  52. Hey Vince, its a pity this is all about men. Personally I would like to get info on how to build a beautiful body too. I’m 31 yrs, 5ft9” and about 70lbs over weight. I have been unsuccessful at getting a fit body and have been struggling for the past 12 years.

    I have had relationships in the past and I’m happy alot of people are not so shallow.

    I do appreciate men with a great body but I don’t like the way some guys just build their upper bodies and leave chopsticks for legs.

    its attractive to see a balanced body but I must say a trim waist and strong biceps appeal to me the most.

    I understand I need hard work and discipline. How much do you think I can loose between now and December.

    Honestly, i found several difficulties to build the body that women want (especially in my abs area).
    I’ve already did weight training, cardio and diet program, but unfortunately i didn’t get “body that women want” yet.

    Btw, this article is really really inspired me, to be more intensive to do the exercise.

  54. I don’t think women know what they want half of the time. And I think using sex appeal to get ripped is as good as any motivation. As shallow as some people label it, at the end of the day, even those of us who are doing it for strength, and health still hope they will get stares and comments from women. However, myself, I have a woman, and I’m probably in better shape than she is. I am focusing all over but more on upper torso than legs. My legs have always been my strong point, but I have a week chest and small back and shoulders so that is where I’m focusing. I still include legs in my workouts, but not with weights, just body weight. Cardio is the part I hate the most, but I do as much of it as I can. I’m in it for health and strength.

  59. I don’t have the right genetics to build muscle, so…I need to concentrate on ALL bodyparts. I have a horrible body and no interpersonal skills, so I’m pretty much screwed woman-wise. I work out in for heart health, bone health, and generally to avoid the usual “decrepitudedness” of the older years.

  60. My chest is what I am really focusing on right now. I have naturally wider shoulders which makes it easier for me to get them bigger because that’s the way my genetics are set up. I have been really trying to develop my chest so I can get that line underneath that you get when they grow larger.

    I haven’t bought Vince’s program yet but I am really considering it now. I’ve been browsing YouTube learning from your free vids and it’s helped alot! I started off at 132 at the beginning of summer and right now I am a little over 147. I had no idea how to gain weight before and I was always frustrated. I had to stop drinking pop, eating doritos, and eating all the wrong kinds. It was tough but I trusted your teaching skills and what do you know? It paid off!

    The biggest annoyance for me is I have a major case of the “Chicken legs” I’m scared my body will get out of proportion if my legs don’t get bigger. I do calf raises and such MWF along with some other leg excersises (depending on the program I’m following). Maybe I just need to focus on them even more instead of worrying about my upper body so much.

  65. Okay, here is an addition to my initial reply:

    The part of the body I would work on most would be the lats, no doubt about it. Not only because of the looks (which are tremendous) but also because of the strength I need to pull myself up – pulling up is the most common ‘weak exercise’ block of men – they manage to lift a heavy weight, have a decent squat and bench press, but when it comes to pull-ups, they grow little.

    Pull-ups are the ultimate exercise showing whether a person is strong throughout or not – or – even better – climbing ropes [1]. This is the great grand exercise for the whole body – working against the whole weight _and_ gravity.

    I think the point about chemistry was being left open by Daniel, and I agree wholeheartedly with you on that one, Vince. My wife wouldn’t consider dating me when we first met because I had to overcome that lack of chemistry with my winning personality and other “good survivalist” traits (e.g., humor, earning capacity, etc). Not that I considered myself horribly out of shape (until recently), but 20+ years ago I was an athlete and have had a sedentary lifestyle and desk jobs for the past 10 years (and blinders to what a horrible lump I have become, couldn’t even stand to take a “before” picture). So I’m not your typical hard gainer, but instead here for high-efficiency workout and diet advice. Despite some setbacks due to injury and illness, I’ve dropped 24lbs in the last 3 months, lowered my body fat from 28% to 21%, and when I run the numbers that means I’ve actually gained 4lbs of lean mass just using Vince’s cutting program (with some awesome turbulence training mixed in)! I am 42 years old, 6′ 4″, and started simple exercise to get back into it at 274lbs/28% body fat (the worst shape of my life). My goal is 220lbs at 10% body fat, so I am nearly halfway there!

    What I need to work on is body composition first, then I forsee needing to do more upper body sculpting, arms, and lats. Having been a football player and avid biker years ago, my shoulders, chest, and quads already seem to be responding to regular exercise, though it’s hard to see through the rest of the fat i need to lose.

  68. I think too many people make the mistake of aiming for massive arms, pecs, shoulders and traps. A deep back and thick legs are much more healthy looking. Although I must admit my girlfriend does tend to comment on my arms a lot which, to be honest, aren’t that impressive (14 1/2 inches). Who know whats going on in the mind of a women! Got to be legs for me though, a man with thick defined quads gets my respect any day

I think the two men on the pictures in the article are a bit too big/much, in my oppinion Ryan Reynolds definetely has build him self a hot bod, and Brad Pitt in troy was also looking hot and then there is fitness model T.J. Hoban all three is good examples of well trained, ripped physiques, but not huge and not very vascular, thats more on the right track when it comes to what woman want body wise
    But dont get me wrong personality and behavior is much more importent and if you are beautiful on the inside and have a fab. personality, you will have much more long term succes with us girls, than if you are muscular and a player/ass… you might get a lot of booty but youll have a hard time getting LOVE

  75. Of all the body parts, I think my chest is the most lacking. Growing up, I trained at the boxing gym a lot, and even as a kid I used to do 30-50 pushups and situps a night, so my abs and upper body are, while not being very big, at least decently toned.

    My chest is a little lacking in this department – it’s mainly bone with a kind of thin film of muscle stretched over but it’s changing and getting noticeably bigger by the week.

    As far as the body type thing goes, yeah, sure, women have as much right to be shallow as men, but if you read some of The Mystery Method or a lot of other seduction or dating stuff, you’ll see the theory that looks are 20% of what a woman aims for, whereas alpha-male personality attributes such as confidence, a good sense of humour, being a protector of loved ones, etc, cover 80%.

    This is because traditionally, in caveman societies, women didn’t really need men to have a positive “replication” value, i.e., being overly attractive, as the ability to survive was a more useful prerequisite in a mate.

    This is why men learned to see more of the physical attributes in a woman, to offset the deficit of a woman deliberately ignoring the lack of replication value to choose survival skills.

    It’s an interesting point to consider – maybe in fact it’s not the body, but that having the body allows them to be confident and this displays via the body language attractive characteristics to the women considering?

  76. I think it is impossible to generalize. Some men like voluptuous women, some like athletic women, and some like women that are sticks (like super models). Women, too, have different preferences. I personally have always been attracted to (what you would call) “skinny” intellectuals as long as they have a warm smile, and a dry sense of humor.     what i don’t agree with Jamie is…imo the no1 turn-off for women is: short guys. if a woman had to choose between a cool / interesting guy with pencil arms and a gut or the cool / interesting short guy with nice arms and a gut, she’ll go for the 1st one. i’m 5’4 and i can tell you this from experience but since i packed on some serious muscles i get a lot of attention. whether male or female, physique is what we see first…

  82. When I was single, the women that I dated (including my wife) said that they were first attracted to my rear end. Funny that I never thought about my rear end being a chic magnet! However, my shape has always being “V” and I believe that this shape accentuated my rear end even more.

    Men & women are first physically attracted to each other. That’s the reason why most people hook up at bars, parties, etc.. How else can someone justify a one-night stand? People don’t go, ‘Oh yeah, she was so witty that I just could not resist her.’

    Obviously looks can only carry a relationship so far. Vince is trying to convey that men and women are first glued together by a physical attraction. The “V” shape is what draws the most female attention to a man.

  83. It is true, with women looks are not as an important factor when choosing a mate. But it is still there. Women are much more attracted to the way you make them feel. A good way to do that is through having a good sense of humor and confidence.

    A GREAT way to build your confidence and energy is to listen to Vince and get your body in shape. Do it for your health, do it for the energy, and do it so you just feel really good and confident and happy with yourself. That is part of the recipe of generating attraction and really starting to attract the women you want in your life. Not to mention the skills yu build of accomplishing goals and seeing a project through.

    I just turned 29 yesterday and I have been learning and getting into fitness for the last 2 years and have significantly changed my body, but have not stuck to a strict 12-16 program and gotten the entire results I want. I am not going to kick the can down the road anymore, I am 29 and I want to have that 6 pack abs look while still in my 20’s! Starting today I am going to commit to a 16 week program and see it through.

    …and i agree with some people that a good body is important, but not the most important. i think the most important is your personality cuz thats how ur going to communicate. it depends bcuz no woman is the same.. some like good-lookin guys, SOME (honestly) just go for the wallet, and some like men that make them feel like a queen or make them feel safe… some like men that make them laugh and i can go on for hours……..no i can, i would just probably go to sleep…… but working out is a good thing bcuz it may increase our confidence and in some way help in a relationship.

  86. Oooh. I think my body is improving…you can see abs, got broad shoulders (for my body structure, at least) but I feel it’ll look SO much better when I work more on my chest. It’s marked but I would love for it to pop out more and have that defining line that separates the pecs from the midsection. Bigger arms/forearms would do wonders too.

  87. i am all for this picture of perfectness, but what about the survey in Britain that said women preferred a beer belly and a hairy chest are we cherry picking research .What about Jack Nicholson it can,t just be his money maybe he has Charisma in spades. I myself do prefer a good physique but what is one persons preference may not be another’s.

  88. I’m 18 years old and weigh 158 pounds at 6’3”. I’m still pretty thin, but hopefully with the corect training I’ll continue building more muscle. As for your question, I would answer the back. I have a serious lack in that “V-shaped torso” and I guess that achieving it would make a serious improvement to my look.

  89. @Robert – So true Robert. Very good point. Also, women who want you just for your body will more likely quickly leave you for another body once they get bored with you. Better to build a great body for yourself and attract a good woman to be with for the right reasons.

  92. As was said before, proportions. I see guys all the time with no legs or calves and huge chests and arms…hilarious looking! You should squat more than you bench press! And yes, you should also be able to do very heavy deadlifts and bent over rows to help develop those lats. For the “V” look, shoulder presses, lateral raises, weighted chin-ups, deadlifts, and bent over rows. That’s how I built my 54.5″ shoulder girth and 49.5″ chest/lat measurement.

    Put in the hard work like Vince suggests and you will get there, but DON’T FORGET TO DIET GUYS! 😉

  94. The bodypart which I need to work most at has definately to be the chest. I just can’t see it growing anymore. Also better upper abs would great, but since I alreaddy have a four pack it’s pretty toned.

  95. Personally I have fairly good genes for muscle building (I think!), I’m only 16 so havn’t been doing weights that long and my success may well be beginners luck. However I have always had a chest many of teenage friends are incredibly envious of and a muscular back. Despite this I obviously don’t have “arm genes” as I really struggle to build biceps or triceps and my arms have remained about 13 inches for as long as I can remember. So my body part would definately be arms.

    I would reckon that though fat ugly bald men do end up getting all the chicks thats essentially because of the societal position and the money they all are earning, period. Its like, the chicks in the office know whom to rub shoulders with so as to get better perks and stuff and Q.E.D.

    However, for a layman(girl,actually)- the first and foremost impression making thing remains to be a guy with a muscle packed body to show. All factors remaining constant, a good bpody wins hands down over fat hippos with loads of money. Plus, we can control and work towards looking good. Anybody got a secret way of earning all the money in this world? am afraid Nope. Money inflow we cant control- muscle mass- we hopefully can.

  99. Ok, I’m 6’3 165. I’m pretty thin, but I’m athletic and play a lot of sports so I’ve got a lot of definition. I’ve asked my girlfriend and she says she loves my body, but that’s not what’s important to her. haha, obviously, since I’ve been missing a front tooth for over a month as a result of a bad watertubing accident. She says the thing she loves most is my personality. So, I guess it’s not as big of a deal as everyone thinks huh? I workout to stay in shape. I’ve got my girl. I don’t need to attract any others.

  100. Vince: I have noticed that “balance” is a key term in these discussions, (the last one on this topic a few days ago as well) so I was thinking about your Upside Down training philosophy and balance over the joints as a measurement of how “balanced” and “proportional” the body is.

    Could a good measurement be that if I can bench press equally much as I can take in horizontal row, I most likely have good “visual” balance too? Since it can be a bit difficult to determine if my back is “balanced” in comparison to my pecs.

    Same going for shoulder press / lat pulldown, leg extension/leg curl etc.

    Girls: The guys in the pictures above (with the exception of Wolverine perhaps…) are they corresponding to the kind of male physique you find attractive or are they too skinny, too muscular, too vascular etc?

    As A woman ( yes a female fred ) I do appreciate a good body on a man. Especially flat abs and good teeth and skin,however,personality and attitude are far more important, we do not live our lives just looking at snapshots of each other.   105. I love summer when many men go around shirtless… and definitely the V shape is very eye catching as well as some nice washboard abs to go along with the eye candy 🙂
    I also agree with Allan about paying attention to the lower body for balance, but really us girls don’t notice it until later… at first it is all upper body… face, arms, chest/back and abs…. yummy 😀
    But it’s the total package really if we’re talking about actually meeting someone and not just oogling them as we pass by…. so guys get your body in shape, but remember that the deal maker is your personality and your brains, your physique is the icing, but not the nutrition that feeds a relationship. Depends on your age and what you’re going for I guess.

  107. It seems that this post is saying that only the top part of the body is important for girls. Training your legs is as much important as your chest, shoulder and abs.

    Funny enough, because I knew a girl who loves to cuddle someone with a love handle. She even said to me that “I don’t have a nice flabs”.

    Attracting the opposite sex is an awesome benefit of being fit, but it shouldn’t be the only reason you decide to get fit. There’s also your health and lots of other reasons, but hey, whatever it takes to motivate yourself to get off your ass! Right?

OK… your theory may be entirely correct–HOWEVER: as a guy using a 12 Step program to recover from a sexual addiction, I can testify that there are many, many men who are old, fat, bald, and/or ugly that don’t seem to have any problem whatsoever in having multiple affairs and other sexual activity.

    Building a super-stud body is a LOT of hard work. Do it for =yourself= and not because you think that you’ll be more attractive to the ladies.

  117. i Really need to work on shoulder. There is this big bone that stick out where the joint to my shoulder is (shoulder bone?) and i really want to get rid of that by getting bigger shoulders. But really over all i need work, especially my back.
